Hi Xoch, your pvt mail box has no address so here goes. I have no listing for Delaware, but I imagine that Psilocybe caerulipes is there. It is known in Maine and New York. Panaeolus subbalteatus is known in Maryland. New York: Conocybe cyanopus, Gymnopilus liquirae, G. luteofolius, G. Luteus, G. spectabilis, G. Validipes, Panaeolina foenisecii(not psycoactive), Panaeolus castaneifolius, Panaeolus femicola, Panaeolus papilionaceus, Panaeolus subbalteatus, Psilocybe caerulipes, P. semilanceata (the 'liberty cap), P. silvatica.
Pennsylvania: Gymnopilus aeruginosus. Virginia: Psilocybe semilanceata. I also suspect that P. caerulipes is in Virginia. For the universe: Indiana: Panaeolus papilionaceus, Panaeolina foenisecii (not psychoactive). Michigan: You picked a good one, 13 species. However I won,t list them all. Conocybe smithii, Gymnopilus aeruginosus, G. liquirae, G. Luteofolius, G. luteus, G. sapineus, G. spectabilis, G. validipes, Panaeolus subbalteatus, Pluteus salicinus, Psilocybe carerulipes, Psilocybe liniformans var. americana, Psilocybe silvatica. and there you have it. mj.

THis ones for nOne---California: Hum this is a long list and I beleive that mainly two species of Copelandia grow in southern California. These would be Copelandia cyanescens and Copelandia tropicalis.Other Northern Califonia species, North of Monterey include: A. muscaria, A. pantherina, Cordyceps capitata (Lsd amides), Gymnopilus aeruginosus, G. liquiritae, G. luteofolius, G. sapineus, G. spectabilis. Hypholoma popperiana (New discovered sp.). Panaeolina foenisecii (not psycho), Pn. fimicola, P. papilionaceus, Psilocybe azurescens, P. baeocystis, P. cyanescens. P. cyanafibrillosa, P. pelliculosa, P. semilanceata P. stuntzii. Thor: I think it is possible that there could be some P. cyanescens, P. silvatica and maybe a bluing species of Conocybe,
and there you have it. Glad to be of help. Mj

Hi John, I just bought 3 of your books from Raver books in Seattle. After looking thru the MM of the Hawaiian Islands I was wondering what is tthe larger mushroom pan cyan or pan trop as far as cap size and length of stipe? Also I was wondering how common the following mushroms are north of Monterey the season will soon be upon us. Ps. Cyanescens, Semilanceata, or any of the other more potent psilocybes, I have collected Pan Subbalteatus for many years around here but have only found Ps. Pelliculosa once while on a foray for gourmet mushrooms in the Santa Cruz mountains. Thanks for the reply if your able.sum

sumdumdguy,Hi there, I use to live in Fort ORd back in the sixties, didnt't do shrooms then.. Just one acid trip and my first Peyote in an enema at Gorda Ranch 17 miles south of Limekiln Creek.. Hippie commune. Did you pick shrooms in the Santa Cruz mountains with Troy Donahue, He was the mycologist for the mycological society there, Long hair. Anyway I do know of Psilocybe cyanescens and P. cyanafibrillosa around homes on Mount Tamilpie, Don't know if I spelled that one right. Anyway Thats all I am sure of. There are many shrooms in California though. Just keep on looking. My guide for the Pacific Northwest is good for northern California. Mj

Thanks MJshroomer, no I am self taught, I have been collecting mushrooms since I was about 8 when we lived in the midwest and we collected morels never been a mycophile. I did run into David Aurora a couple of times about 10-15 years ago, he signed his book for me when it first came out. I have heard that south of SF the more potent psilocybe's are rare indeed Mt. Tamalpias (sp) is on the north side of the gate. I hear that in Golden Gate park the ps.cyanescens are sometimes found. I have an azurescens print I got from Paul Stamets, but have yet to find the time to culture it, hope to next spring so they will fruit that fall or winter here. I find the Subbalteatus in the same types of habitats that you describe in your book. Can you tell me more about the copelandia or (panaeolus) differences between cyan and tropicalis? Or are they macroscopically too similar? I grew some from a company that also sold me supposed azurescens which grew out to be cubensis and am curious if the copelandia cyanescens they sold me are really cyan? They are one or the other I'm sure. 1 gm is strong 2 is the kind but i thought that tropicalis was a smaller mushroom and was wondering if they could be that mushroom. From the pictures in your book they seem to be closer to your description of tropicalis.sum

Hi Iron Lung, Gymnopilus aeruginosus is reported from Pennsylvania. However I expect that Psilocybe caerulipes is in the area somewhere. Stoner, here are the reported species for Vermont. Gymnopilus liquiritae, G. sapineus, G. spectabilis, and according to Stamets, Psilocybe azurescens. The latter introduced outdoors from either Washhington or Oregon State. I also believe that Panaeolus subbalteatus is in Vermont since it is popular in Maine amongst a certain group of Maine Lopster Fisherman who use it in an annual festival. Mj.

Hey Iron Lung, Buy a guide. Orson K. Miller's book or Joseph amiratti. Both show Gymnoopilus species which are in your region.Psilocybe caerulipes is pictured in one of Smith and Miller's guides to midwestern and eastern america. then check that against the species I named. You might even find some photographs. Hi Yoda, Colorado. Well I answered this in another topic some where but one more time for Colorado. Go to the Telluride mushroom festival. I think theres a topic in the forums somewhere from the last ten days. Concocybe cyanopus, Gymnopilus sapineus and Panaeolus papilionaceus, A species similar to Panaeolus subbalteatus. Have a great foray Mj.

Well according to my paper, Washington State has 2 mushrooms less than Oregon State.Ok, here are the species for Washington (24 species): Amanita muscaria, A. pantherina; Conocybe cyanopus, C. smithii; Gymnopilus aeruginosus, G. brandlei, G. luteofolius, G. sapineus, G. spectabilis, G. viridans; Mycena cyanorhizza; Panaeolus fimicola, P. papilionaceus, P. subbalteatus; Psilocybe baeocystis, P. cyanafibrillosa, P. cyanescens, P. fimetaria, P. liniformans var. americana, P. pelliculosa, P. semilanceata, P. silvatica, P. strictipes, P. stuntzii. And of course the newly introduced species from Oregon: Psilocybe azurescens and the non-hallucinogenic Panaeolina foenisecii. Mj

Hello mjshroomer. I have a question for you, you seem to know your mushrooms well. I read in 1994 Audobon field guide that Hygrocybe conica (Hygrophorous conicus) is a hallucinogenic mushroom that is "eaten by many people" is that true? Also, what are the hallucinogenic species that can be found in the central latitude of Wisconsin? And, can you recomend a good identification book(s)? If you could help me out, it sure would be appreciated! Thanks

Well, there seems to be a good group of shroomers from Wisconsin who frequent the Shroomery. I think this is great.According to Stamets, Psilocybe azurescens has been seeded into Wisconsin. Since Wisconsin is a big dairy country there are obviously numerous large dairy farms and cattle throughout much of the Southern half of the state. I have hear rumors of Liberty caps being found in this state, and also of P. pelliculosa. I am sure of Amanita because it is in Michigan and Southern Ontario. I hope this is helpful and for books Orson Miller's book or Smith and Weber-Smith;s guide to Midwestern mushrooms is excellant. Lindcoff has a few errors in his guide and I do not beleive that the mushroom you ask me about is a psychoactive species. There is nothing in the literature to suggest that it is. When he labeled Psilocybe stuntzii as "Stuntzi's Blue Legs" I asked him where he heard this name from and he told me he had made it up for lack of something better. Andrew Weil referred to the same mushrooms as "Washington Blue Veils" No one has ever heard anyone refer to P. stuntzii as that. Its common name is "blue ringers." Mj

When is a good season to look for those fungi? It has been about 70 degrees or cooler, for the past week, and we have had a lot of rain, too. There are a lot of patches of mycelia in the woods that have broken through the dirt, suggesting a lot of fungal growth in the area. The only fungi I have seen though, are little mushrooms like waxy caps. I hope that helps a bit.

I think i'm going to try and search out some psilocybe caerulipes here in pa.. but my question is where should I look.. I know it grows on wood/wood chips but does that mean I should just go walking in the woods looking for this species?Any advice or tips on the actual process of finding mushrooms would be great. I also live around a couple farms, any dung lovers around the Pa area?

Its possible that there could be some species in Long Island because there are more than 13 species of psilocybian fungi identified from NEw York. The most popular species the liberty cap has been collected in pastures in New York.Psilocybe caerulipes grows along strams and riverbank areas on the East Coast including New Yok and if there are any lgging clear cuts you can fin Psilocybe silvatica, a species which resembles Psilocybe pelliculosa (the woodland liberty cap). There are also several varieties of Gymnopilus which grow on rotted wood and dead tree stumps. and of Course Panaeolus subbalteatus, a rotted hay and sometimes in manure species. All I can say is do not under any set of circumstances eat any wild mushroom if if does not stain blue. Oh Gary Lincoff (editor of the Audubon Mushroom Field Guide) has collected Gymnopilus species in Central Park in the fall. so look around during this rainy time and see what you can find. Take your collections to the New York Botanical Gardens and people there would be more than happy to tell you what you have picked. Mj.

Well when any mushroom which contains the psychomimetic alkaloids psilocin or psilocybin is damaged whether from human handling or from natural elements (wind, rain, falling leaves insect or animal bites from chewing and feeding onthese shrooms) They tend to turn blue or blue-green or azure-blue.THis tells you that the mushroom you have just picked and handled most likely has psilocybin in it. If it does't stain blue then don't eat it. While Seattle has 18 species. 6-7 of theeose species are common as ice cream ata an icecream parlour. We find ours in a man made environment. Y0ou in New York have a lot to look at, Good Luck Mj

First Satnal,Because only two species were reported from Pennsylvania. That does not mean that there aren't more there. Conduitdal. Sorry, to hot in Nevada. Stonefellow. Kuala Lumpur has both P. cubensis and Copelandia species. Notably Copelandia cyanescens. And No there are no blue staining mushrooms that are poisonous. There is a poisonous mushroom Boletus cyanescens whichg is already blue, hence its name cyanescens. However blue is its natural color. and Boletus mushrooms do not have gills. They have pores like a sponge. and there is a bluing mycena in indonbesia that is deadly poisonous, but once again this is the natural color of the mushroom. And that should take care of Thuunderfucks proclamation about blue mushrooms. For alas he is hunting from the cow fields of Quebec.

Paul Stamets book is the only one. There are guides for different parts of the USA. SOme of these guides show local species.Alexander H Smith wrote several field guides a that were one foot long and eight inches wide. For different parts of the country. His book for the Western United States showed Psilocybe pelliculosa. I looked from this picture in 1972-1973 before I found my first liberty caps. I thought they resembled the picture of P. pelliculosa, but they were macroscopically different. His east coasst guide shows photographs of Psilocybe caerulipes which graces the Eastern Seaboard of America. You can usually find these guides in a University Library, in a reference section of the library. Mj

John: This is interesting, I had heard that bluing was not a save all way of identifying. But if you say so then I will believe it Although the Lib Cap doesnt stain blue, this is true is it not.. Well if the stain blue is a safe technique then mushroom hunting should be a pretty safe pastime, I have always been given dire warnings about lookalikes and such.... Cheers..

Hi Thor, Yes the experts say bluing is not a good indictive factor for identifying psilocybian mushrooms.Well Yes they are experts , but experts in what. Edible and toxic mushrooms. Many of the experts do not like magic mushrooms or the people who use them because they are drugs and are illegal. They are only experts in the class rooms. They probably only collected in the field or wild for a few years and then they end up in a classroom teaching for twenty and do not really get out to where the shrooms are. Only a few experts do and they know very little about psilocybes or any other shroom with psilocybin. And yes not all liberty caps stain blue. But you do know that they are liberty caps which you have picked. And posionous mushrooms do not resemble liberty caps. I have an english paper from Great Britain from a respectable journal where one author says that the liberty caps resemble deadly amanitas. This is not true, yet many doctors have probably read this paper and now assumed that this is so. Yet I have yused the bluing factor all of my shroom life with no error in judgement. But just the same, be carfull. If you do not live in the Southeast USA or in the Pacific Northwest, you will usually not find what you are looking for. Unless you are diligent and careful. There are some individuals who now know where to collect P. caerulipes along the East Coast. Once you find a particular species, then you can find it almost anywhere in your area. Mj

Hi there, Yes I am around and will be till the fat lady sings.Idaho, well my list is short and strange. There are five species of Gymnopilus in Idaho and three psilocybes. Gymnopilus aeruginosus(listed in Stamets book), G. liquiritae, G. luteofolius, G. sapineus andG. spectabilis. The three Psilocybes are Psilocybe fimetaria (resemles blue ringers) Psilocybe pelliculosa and Psilocybe silvatica. The latter two species are common in logging sides in slashings and pilons in clearcuts recently logged out within the last three years. They tend to grow abundantly and gregariously in large quantities. The Fimetaria can be found in well manured or manicured lawns around new office buildings or apartment complexes. They have a slight blue ring towards the top of the stem. Gymnopilus species resemble the "Honey Mushroom." They can be collected on dead tree stumps or trunks. I'll be away from here for about a month so good luck Mj

mister ill: Heres a link for the Calgary question, follow that link and there is another link to a topic on Alberta which mjshroomer has already answered. http://www.shroomery.org/ubbnoncgi/Forum3/HTML/000370.html My only advice is that you get yourself a field guide, like Paul Stamets. A field guide is an absolute must for anybody thinking of hunting, otherwise you will be wasting your time. Just so everyone knows, Mushroom John is away for about 1 month. So this thread is basicly done for now, if anybody has a question maybe hold off for a while. Cheers, Thor....

I need some help. I am new to the SE Alabama area and went shrooming in a local field here a few nights ago. I found several shrooms in cow pie's, but surprisingly they were not cub's which I thought were prominent in this area. I can't ID these shrooms and was wondering if you could help. They are pure white, stalk and cap, and the stalk is very strong. They grew in cow pie's and there were from 1-15 in each pie. Some were super small while some were up to 1 1/4" caps. The stalks were up to 4 inches long and they did not brue blue. What have I picked and what else is common around here? Anyone know of any good areas around here for cub's?

Hi there,Most likely you picked some mushrooms known as Panaeolus antillarum. This is common in cattle in most parts of the world. They are not psychoactive and they tend to have a silvery look to them with age. If Ythan returns then I will learn how to post a picture in the forum box so I can show you what it looks like. Mj

Hi There,First all we havee one listed species for Neww Jersey, Psilocybe graveolens, a species related to psilocybe zapotecorum used by the Zapotec Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico. This species has a cap which is convex to subumbonate (With a protrud like nipple), and is slightly straite at the margin (meaning that the gill plates show throught the top of the cap when the mushroom is moist). The cap is hygrophanous (Changing color as it drys) from brownish fading to a cremy white or pale orange-brownish color, with some dark green staining tones. The gills are brown to chocolate-brown and the edges are of the same color. The tem is equal towards the base with bluing. it is also hollow white to browninsh and the base is covered with soil. Its habitat is caespitose or gregarious on marshy soils in meadows and fruiting in November. Known only from hackensack, New Jersey. It has a strong odor and its names means "strong smelling." If it is in one place, it could very well be in other parts of NJ besides Hackensack. Now for the second question. I too have heard rumors of both P. cyanescens and P. semilanceata being found in Alberta, yet no one has made any herbarium deposits of either species. It is possible, but I cannot say for sure. The shrooms I listed in an earlier thread are definately there and scarse to find. Good luck. Mj

Well There are several species of a big orange mushroom known as Gymnopilus in Ohio. These Gyms are associated with rotted wood and/or dead treees stumps or trunks. Paul Stamets reports Psilocybe azuresens freom Ohio nut I think this is in only one persons backyard. Psilocybe caerulipes is a bluing species which can be found in the late fall around streams and Riverbanks. Where in Ohiop I do not know. only that these species are there. Mj

Remember you have to put some effort into research, because mjshroomer has put so much effort into this thread already...The least anybody can do is to read the whole thread to see if their question has been answered. If it has not then please post it... Lets not forget all the work Mushroom John puts into this place! We dont want to give him extra work for no reason.... Cheers, Thor...

Springbok: Yeah that what be nice, but again this place involves people putting in their own personal time... So if such a list was created, it would require someone to do it... Which of course would take some time, but would be well worth it. After Mushroom John gets back, Ill talk to him about making a html document with as much info about shroom locations as can be done.... Im not saying I will make this up for sure, but you never know... It would be really handy for reference... Cheers, Thor...

Thor man,Thanks for the quick reply. However, I wuz under tha' impression that he had a ready made list. That is why I wuz winderin' why tha' mon didn't just post the bloody thing to being with. Now I understand, of course. So, to everyone: What mushrooms grow in Africa? Is anyone aware of an interesting website or book devoted to Africa? I already have the Mushrooms of Southern Africa book, BTW. Also, I am interested specifically in P. Natalensis, and this Stropharia mushroom (hallucinogenic) reported by a French scientist in West Africa (Cote D'Ivoire). The man got too hopped up on shrooms to be able to properly identify it, and there is a great deal of controversy over whether it is even a Stropharaia or not. Regards, Jake

Oh yeah, another quick question...You stated that Psilocybe semilanceata exists in Virginia, yet I have never once seen it despite numerous forays into the Virginian hinterland. I have found nearly every remotely hallucinogenic mushroom there is in this state (roughly six altogether), but I didn't think that Psilocybe semilanceata was included... I have only seen those in the Pacific Northwest. Could you please clarify? Regards, Jake

once many moons ago me and some freinds were hiking on green horn mountain in the wetmore mountain range in colorado. This mountain range is in southwestern colorado. its about 20 miles west of the town of Rhy. anyway we were hiking in this fertile vally when low and behold we found a psilocybe cubnsis poping out of a old cow pie. my friend with some good knowledge in mycology picked it. He immediatly iddentified it when the stem he was handeling turnd blue. He was not into the psychidelic thing so he threw it away. I myself was only 10 at the time so i did not know anything at the time about mushrooms. In recent times my well stocked distributer of fine herbage was invited to go to some picking grounds near the town of Beulah. They have been found in colorado!!!! Some of my old dealers friends picked more than enough to sell!!!! with the wetmore mountain range it is not a question of where but a question of when these little shroomies want to grow. when me and my friends found that cubensis it was fall. I remeber because the aspen were already turning a nice glowing yellow.I would suspect that these cubies were transported from Texas along with the long horn cattel. well I hope that some one might fond this info usefull.

Mjshroomer, I was looking at some of the older posts on shroom hunting in Texas and you refered to some paper of yours that was being released about regional mushrooms and I was wondering if it was out yet and where I could get it. If it isn't out could you tell me when it will be out and where I could get it. Thanks

Could you tell me what shrooms grow in North Dakota and Minnesota? To be more exact, in eastern ND and western MN? We have cows, but do the fields have any shrooms in them? Thanx!!

Hi Benb57681, RedMerc and ZadfrackGlutz69.One at a time. I didn't kn0ow this thread was still kicking around. Well Ben57681, My paper is titled "A worldWide Geographical Distribution of the Neurotropic Fungi, An Analysis and Discussion" co-authored by Gast?n Guzm?n and Jochen Gartz. It is 160 pages, 45 photographs and 214 entheogenci mushroom species (of which 171 are psilocybian) listed in a state by state and country, including some island groups. It will be published in the Italian Journa "Analis de Civ Mus Rovereto, Italy, in English. It was due in May of Last year. I have no Idea when but I hope soon. Ok Now for RedMerc, Hi Minnesota and North Dakoa, I have no knowledge of mushrooms in this region. IT is possible that there are liberty caps in Minnesota. You have dairy farms because I use to date a girl from Barret Minnesota near Furgus Falls. DFo you know the region. Anyway she told me they use to pick shrooms there. I don't know what kind. There are probably Amanitas which I personally do not recommend. and I am sure that Panaeolus subbalteatus is common. It gerows in rotted hay and is common in manure in the spring and late fall and can be easily collected at riding stables in the stable shavings and in rotted haystacks. Ok now for ZadFrackGluzt69, Conn. I beleive Panaeolus subbalteatus, Psilocybe caerulipes, Gymnopilus spectabilis could be in this region yet I have no listing. I do list 33 states with known collections and herbarium deposits. Mj Good Luck in the new Millenium

Well I just typed a response to this add and lost the whole reply when the internet went off line on me while I was working on it. I hate that so here goes again in segments since I have to post this after each response.I just spent an hour answering this thresad and its frustrating to lose what I wrote. I again just lost my Maine response so here goes that one again"_____- _____________________________________ For Gunner, Maine has Panaeolus subbalteatus and Panaeolus papilionaceus. Well Five responses in one reply:Gunner: Maine has aaaPanaeolus papiulionaceus which is used annualy by a group of Maine lobster fishermen for many decades. Panaeolus subbalteatus and Psilocybe caerulipes can be found in Maine. There is also a possiblility that Psilocybe pelliculosa and/or Psilocybe silvatica may also be in Maine . All in the fall except the Paneolus subbalteatus. Check my article at erowid.org titled "Close Encounters of the Paneolus Kind." it gives diescriptions for collecting this species in Oregon and Washing and Hawaii. _________________________________________ SUGAREEfer Well Mass is the same as Maine except Psilocybe caerulipes has been reported from there. I have also talked to some students from Cambriudge who said that they found liberty caps in Mass. I find no recorded record of that species there buit it could be. ------------------------------------------- For STARTSHOOTER, Amanita muscaria, Amanita pantherina and Cymnopilus aeroginosa all grow in Pennsylvainia. Good Luck. ____________________________________________ And this is for AnubisRonin Japan: Agrocybe farinacea (Hongo, 1960; Koike et al., 1981; Imazeki & Hongo, 1983, 1987). Hey Crobih,I havce never ever mention Amanita pantherina as a deadly or poisonous mushroom. Where did this bit of misinformation come up from. Also Panaeolus sphrinctrinus var. campanulatus is not a psychoactive mushroom even though Stamets listed it as a species in his Psilocybin mushrooms of the World. I have only identified this species when people have posted its picture in the Shroomery. I have never said it was a posychoactive species and I only identified it when shown a picture of this species. I have always stated that it is not psychoactive and you should not eat something like this to begin with. It always has a slight redish looking stem and little fringes of teeth-like skin hanging from the bottom edge of the caps. And a small black ring is visable on the stem. Panaeolus papilionaceus, Panaeolus retirugis and Panaeolus goosensiae are all macroscopidcally similar. They are ofter found in abundance on horse and cow manure in fields, usually fruiting when the Cubensis or Copelandia specimens are not in season, but may appear sometimes in the same paddie as Copelandia and other mushroom speciemens do. For New Jesrsey posted 09-07-1999 07:00 AM ET (US) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi There, First all we havee one listed species for Neww Jersey, Psilocybe graveolens, a species related to psilocybe zapotecorum used by the Zapotec Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico. --------------------------------------------- For NEW HAMPSHIRE, Well its sketchy here. I suppose I should mention that there are probably Gymnopilus in your state, Panaeolus papilionaceus (the subbalteatus variety), and posibly Psilocybe caerulipes. Gandalf,Hi hows Frodo? Well you are in the Southeast of the USA. Psilocybe cubensis, maybe some Copelandia, Panaeolus subbalteatus and Psilocybe Ccaerulipoes grace your fine state. Thats all I can give you. Now you have to do the rest and find some. =------------------------------------= For PsiLLy Cybe,Well The onkly psychoactive species I am familar with in Colorado is Conocybe cyanopus. It is a small Cinnamon colored looking mushroom with a water clear stem which, when picked fresh from the ground will have a blue bulbous base after it is ripped from its soiled roots. The shroom grows well along streams and river banks iun abundance and take fifty to seventy five small shrooms for a dose. This wouldd be equivalent to approiximately 1 quarter of a fresh ounce. See Stamets book for a photograph. I may have posted a similar picture in the Mushroom Hunting forum at spiritplants.yack.org Mj

Hi MJ, I posted in a different thread and was directed here, I wanted to know if and where I could get shrooms growing in my area, a couple of people asked for England but I couldn't see a reply listed.. I was wondering if you knew of any around Glasgow in Scotland? Cheers, Shot.

For NewKid and ShotFullOfDiamonds.La is sparse, maybe some Copelandia's (very Rare) Panaeolina castaneifoilia, Panaeolus subbalteatus. For ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND> WEll Psilocybe cyanescens has been collected the the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. You also have liberty caps all over Great Britain and in Scotland. Mj. Go back to the biginning of this thread and look for Great Britain. ITs in here somewhere. That way I do not have to retype the text. Mj

Well I grew up every summer in Baraboo Wisc at Devils Lake State Park.I would tell yolu to check fields for Liberty caps in the late fall about three weeks up to the freeze. Check in the pastures in tall grass. I have heard rumors of Psilocybe semilanceata there. In the spring try looking for Panaeolus subbalteatus at riding stables and at race treacks.. They grow in manure sporadically and in rotted hay with stable shavings very abundantly. Pictures of these species can be viewed at spiritplants.com in the mushroom hunting section. Click the go back button for one year. Mj

well i once asked you about nova scotian shrooms, and ive found tons and tons of the dung-loving psilocybes. but then, these babies are so weak it isnt worth it.i once found one solitary, waxy, yellow conic holow-stemmed, with a somewhat lighter stipe than the cap, brownish-purple gills. this mushroom grew in a forest pasture, away from the other mushrooms (various weak and non-psycho psibes and pans) in the shade after a rain near rasberry bushes next to rotting leaf and plant matter growing directly out of grainy crushed granate (former quarry) where certain mosses and lichens florished. this was in the foothils of the south mountain of the annapolis valley in Nova Scotia. and this mushroom stained dark blue almost instantly evrywhere it was touched, stem and cap. to me, it looked like an azure, and i only ever found one specimin but it should be impossible for psilocybe azuresens to grow there. Oh i ate it, but it was about 3 wet grams sitting in my pocket getting mushed and i barely felt it. tho i have found alot of amazing mushies there, including stropharia hardii, various amanitas and inocybes, conocybes, etc. also it is mountainous and unique to the regeon, and im pretty sure ive found Psilocybe Montana in august growing directly in moss. i think you might find the area called "three pools" an interresting hike if you ever go to the annapolis valley nova scotia, from september-early nov, there are the most amazing mushrooms there, from chanterelles to stropharia, theres even these huge (up tp 6" dia) conic orange mushrooms with pink gills that smell like oranges. and one solitary mushroom i found that looked exactly like the golden teacher strain of P. Cubensis from above, but from below forget it, white gills, solid stipe, no bluing. but man, the mushrooms in that area catch the corner of your eye if you know what i mean. facinating tho. Ive heard from the Nova Scotia Museum of natural history that Stropharia Hardii is hallucinogenic, but i avoid anything without psilocybe or panaeolis (sp) in the name unless ive seen it stain blue. but then the same museum lists Psylocybe Pellucilosa (conifer psylocybe) as "liberty cap" and claims we have those also. ive never seen em tho, but maybe. my real important question is as follows: Im currently travelling across canada with a government funded work program....anywho. im now in ontario, next stop quebec. way to cold for anything now. but my final stop is in East Vancouver BC. OH BOY!!!!! anyway, i was wondering, since i will be aviving in early march and staying untill early may for sure, what shrooms would be available to me, where can i expect to find them (non-specific) and under what conditions and times of year. i may stay in the area longer if i can get a job and afford to live there. ive heard azures can be found on the island too :P but right now i have cyans, libs, and baeos dancin in my head. any hope for spring??

Well here goes for the last 6 people to ask me where are the shrooms.FISHMAN: You can find Panaeolus subbalteatus and some species of Gymnopilus throlughout Vermont in the late fall before the freeze. I have no specific Locations though. About Stamets who list P. azurescens in Vermont. This is only because someone planted them outdoors and they will only grow in a certain habitat for two to three years and then they are gone. This is true for most species not common in manured soil. Mitchmast.
Hi. I too lived in North Sydney Forkes on Cape Breton Isle back in the sixties. It is a stunning visual experience to be on the north of Nova Scotia. Anyway heading for Bc. Well mabye some Psilocybe stuntzii will be found on new fresh lawns with sprinkler systems while you are here. About the Hardii. It is not psychoactive. Someone fed you some misinformation. Sorry. URIAH HEEP: You can find Psilocybe cubensis in Georgia in the decomposed manure of cattle. I mycelf had to go through dozens of fields before I found the liberty cap and when I lived for four months in Florida in the late 1970's I must have went through about 15 fields in a two month period over and over before I found my first cubensis. Psiulocybe weilii, named in honor of Andrew weil, is also from Georgia and grows in decayed wood and trigs, etc. SHROOMVOICE: I only have listings for Gymnopilus aeruginosus from Penn. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. PSMAXX: Again I have no reports of Psilocybian mushrooms from Utah, just Mormons. Sorry, Too hot. MAybe Amanita in mountane regions. PIRK420: Well after all there are reports of Conocybe cyanopus, a small cinnamon-orange gilled mushroom found growing on sphagum moss along streams and riverbanks. very common in the early spring (March and April) after the early rains. Also Gymnopilus sapineus on dead tree trunks and rotted wood and of course Panaeolus papilionaceus. Good luck to all you smoomerites. Mj

I've never seen any magic shrooms growing in Tx that I know of. And I would also like to know if there are any kinds around here that don't grow in cow manuer. Thanx

Hey,That whole time I's being cut down by that john guy?Hey everybody don't get on johns shit list!Don't eat unidentified mushrooms, don't express floozy fluants of faith/religion.So mrshroomer.I was wondering.People have told me that mushrooms have adapted to caves in minneapolis. Can they grow in such complete darkness, or are flashlights enough to induce fruiting. Also I noticed you mentioned a mycena species growing in wa.Well I found some myceana (or however its spelled)species growing in a minneapolis golf course. They were on a thick branch section and had dark blue fuzzy feet, and light brown caps.I stuck the branch in a jar and got succesive flushes(I did not eat any!).They were so dark blue at the feet it was scary. My bid is that they are poisonous. What do you say. Please dont call me any names dork.(kidding)Ass hole(kidding again)

Very impressive mjshroomer! I was wondering what shrooms grow in central california? Also, if a shroom is growing on cow dung doest that make it absolutly a hallucinogenic mushroom? Are there any poisonous shrooms that grow on cow dung in central california? Thanks!

High Techno Trancer,Okay, only a smal percentage of psilocybian containing mushrooms grow from manure. There are more than 170 species of psilocybian containing mushrooms in the world. only about 15% of those species grow from manure. Most grow in manured soil or in deciduos woods and man made environments, sandy soil, dead tree stumps lawns woodchips and sphagum moss. In Norther california you have liberty caps, baeos, stuntzii's and P. cyanescens. Maybe a few Copelandia's but only one or two specimens of those a year if you are lucky. Ps. here if you go back in this thread to its beginning and scour this thread you will find somewhere within a complete list of California species.

Well Referman, In Tennesse we have Algorius tipperusky, hehehe. No all kidding aside, you have some Gymnopilus there a wood lioving fungi and very bitter to chew. There are of course along the east coast along streams and riverbanks, Psilocybe caerulipes. There is a good picture in Alexander H Smith's Guide to Easter Mushrooms. I think Stamets also dispplays a picture in his Psilocybe mushrooms of the World Books. and Missouri also has Gymnopilus and a maybe Paneolus subbalteatus. Mj

WELL, I just read through all 126 replies and didnt see as much as I would like to see for species in florida.. afterall florida pretty much rocks for shrooms. SO,, this is everything I have collected (mostly from bits and pieces of what mj has said and also from other sources on the internet). Psilocybe cubensis- goes without saying Psilocybe caerulescens- the landslide shroom(from mexico) Psilocybe mammilata- no information on this One Psilocybe tampanensis- very little info on this One Psilocybe weilii- has been found in georgia, MAYBE"maybe" in northern florida Copelandia cyanescens- what a beautiful shroom, IVE found it here Copelandia chlorocystis- no information on this One Gymnopilus luteofolius- no information on this One Panaeolus subbalteatus- from:"Field Guide to the Psilocybin Mushroom", I would REALLY just love to see some of these. +++Please mj if you could just correct me(dont want to be spreading false information on the shroomree) and please add to it anything else that you can. Muchos gracias. Dank u. Thank You.

Hi Airdog, I would suggesst that you try to find a University in Colimas somewhere and look up Guzmans book The Genus Psilocybe.
Then check each of the Mexican species listed in his book. Each species provides dozens of locations throughout the differet Mexican States regarding where the mushrooms are found.
That should make it a little easier for you to locate a particular place.
The Deruumbes complex consists of P. caerulescens and several variations of that species. They love growing around sugar cane mulch and along the roads where cane is hauled in and out tot he market. They grow alongside the dirt roads in clumps and cluster thus the name landslide mushroom. They grow were the road slides away fromthe fields of sugar.

Go Read my book :Magic Mushrooms of australia and New Zealand. I suppose you mean paddock not paddick.
And the shrooms are Psilocybe.
My book is at:
http://www.erowid.org
in the mushrooms section of their website.
Look in the appendix for the species ID and locations and each species will tell you where they were colelcted from.

I am interested in these Mexican mushrooms as I vacation frequently in Acapulco. I am returning in mid November for my 23rd trip. I am planning to hunt while I am there. This book is exactly what I need. I sure hope there are some mushrooms in that area. The mountains around the bay wake up in fog every morning.

what about Victoria Australia? We have a type of gym, Ps.Subaeruginosa and possible allies (particularly Australiana with hyaline pluerocystidia), and Ps.Semilanceata (although im in need of assistance with locations in victoria this mushroom has been collected). What of the possibility of Ps.Cubensis and Copelandia Cyanescens here?? Western Australia now has wavy-capped Subaeruginosa and Australiana too.

Would you have any info on psilocybes growing around the Venezuelan Andes, or anywhere around western Venezuela near the Colombian border? I understand that this info is really hard to get a hold of if there was any, but I'm just wondering what you know about this area. Thanks again.
Peace~ -ban
