Colonel's Thai Lipa Yai Monotub Grow (Fruiting) 1

Hey guys, just started my first monotub grow and thought i would share the experience with you all! I started by inoculating 2 x 16oz Sterilized Rye berry bags and waited about 2 weeks for 2/3 colonization. I then broke up the bricks mixing the contents and waited another week for full colonization here was the result! I then began to prepare my substrate: 1 x 5 gal bucket 1 x Brick of Coir 2 qt Vermiculite 4 qt boiling water I placed 1 brick of Coir and 2 quarts of Vermiculite in the 5 gallon bucket and brought 4 quarts of water to a boil. I then placed the water in the bucket and placed a lid over the bucket and let the contents sit for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes i stirred the contents thoroughly and placed the lid back on. I let the substrate cool down in the bucket for around 2 more hours to about 85 degrees and placed the substrate in my monotub leaving a bit left over for a casing layer. I then opened the spawn bags and began to mix the spawn with the substrate evenly throughout the tub. After I decided to place a casing layer with the left over Coir i hadn't put in the monotub. It is now 12/30/2016 and we wait for this grow into the New Year! Happy Holidays guys! It is now 1/6/2017 and my substrate seems to be 85% colonized, I have removed the tape from my Monotub and placed Polyfil into the holes. I also mounted a light above which emits a 6500k cool light, this is set on a timer for 12 hours on and 12 hours off. Now we wait for pins! I'll keep you all updated as this grow proceeds. It is now 1/10/17 and i have spotted loads of knots appearing! I've been keeping the tub misted when needed and there's been quite a bit more growth. I'll update the thread with photos when these suckers pin. It is now 1/15/2017 and there are quite a few pins appearing, some a bit mutated but oh well! Although growth has been slow i am hopeful for a nice flush will all these knots. Although mold appeared in my tub as well i isolated the area with a flame sterilized knife and removed the infested substrate, then i soaked the exposed area with H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) as an extra precaution. Now we wait for full fruits and hope this mold doesn't rear its ugly face again! It is now 1/18/2017 and three days later there are quite a bit more pins! I've been keeping the watering up quite a bit more due to the fact that I'm gone for extended periods of time. But so far so good! I have added a layer of salt over the recently contaminated area soaked again in H2O2 to prevent further growth. It is now 1/19/2017 and full fruits have begun to form! It's been a sort of uneven flush but lots of pins so no complaints here. 1/20/2017Here's some of the first flush! There's a couple mutants in there but it's still pushing out fruits! 1/21/2017One day later and we got another full dehydrator of mushies! 1/22/2017Yet another days harvest. 1/23/2017The tub has slowed down a bit but its still pushing out fruits here and there. Got the fourth harvest here. 1/24/2017All of these bad boys weighed out to about 74g (2oz 18g) dry! I'd say thats pretty good considering trich appeared a few times. 1/26/2017Total weight came out to 80g (2oz 24g) dry! Until next time guys!

As you can see my impatience got the best of me, but I removed the uncolonized rye as to not induce contam.

I hope your grow goes amazing, but you gotta' colonize 100%. Let's assume you missed even one uncolonized grain, it gives any mold a perfect place to start gaining territory. It's basically like planting a mold seed in your grow. Molds like Trichoderma have much more aggressive enzymes than any mushrooms mycelium, that's why they can grow right on top of healthy mushroom mycelium. So it's best to never even give it a chance to get started, once it has started it's a real problem.
It's much easier to prevent it from growing than to stop it from growing.
I'm not trying to give you shit though, and your grow will likely be fine.

Wow, good eye
I do hope the grow goes well. I can't say I wasn't tempted to do the same thing for my first mono

Lol nothing gets past tmethyl. He just scans threads with his lazer zombie eyes and then puts his ear back in
Good luck on your grow man! I'm hopping on board!

I appreciate the input guys, especially you Tmethyl. Trust me this isn't news to me, but i decided to take a leap of faith and start my grow ASAP. I'm starting to consider Rye jars to speed up colonization instead of bags due to my extremely impatient nature. I'm thinking I don't have much to worry about as I kept everything sterile at all times but I see your point, i'll heed your warning next time man!

I'll keep you all updated nevertheless!

Hey guys! It is now 1/6/17 and the monotub seems to be just about fully colonized!

My question is, should i fruit it now or wait a few more days?

Thai lipa yai was my first grow as well! Good luck!
Also your tub will fruit when it's ready, you can mess with the stuffing and everything but it'll fruit when it fruits.

My question is, is it too early to add poly and introduce light and FAE?

This is something many people have different ideas about. You can introduce fae whenever you want but it may result in mold or an uneven pin set, some people have no issues introducing fae from the start but i wouldnt reccomend.
But this is a monotub, the idea is that you only need to fan to prevent water pools forming, and you spray to keep the substrate from drying out, for lights you should have 12/12. This is done not to make mushrooms grow but to allow the substrate to basically breathe/sweat

I would let it colonize a little more, but some people introduce fruiting conditions right away with success. Up to you basically.
And this made me

What a wonderful play on taxonomic terminology.
