Madness Vs. Stupidity
    #25131725 -

Does anyone have any thoughts on the differences between Madness (insanity), and stupidity (intellectual disability)?

Can someone be insane, but not stupid.... or vice versa? I'm trying to figure out the differences between the two.

To me, traits of stupidity include low IQ/EQ, inability to learn from past mistakes, easily manipulated etc.

Insanity to me, means someone is not sound of mind, but not necessarily stupid. The person is smart enough to realize what they are doing is stupid, but perhaps their mental processes and the way their mind works inhibits their ability to function normally in society.

Basically, a stupid person and an insane person both have trouble functioning in society, but a stupid person is simply unable to function, whereas an insane person has the tools and abilities to function, but their mind just simply isn't working correctly in a way that allows them to function.

What do you think?

I think madness is believing that reality is other than it is, e.g. That the Sun revolves around the Earth or that the Earth is not a sphere. In this sense madness to me is naivety and ignorance which in the end just means not knowing.

Quote:
Ignorance is not so much a shame as being unwilling to learn

I think an intellectual disability is within a category of its own and I wouldn't consider it right to lump them in with anyone you may consider mad or dumb.

If anything it could be considered dumb to go against the flow of established knowledge, like saying Climate Change isn't real and that there is no limit to the amount of green house gases our atmosphere can absorb.

EQ and IQ I think change over a lifetime, learning from past mistakes can take a lot of mistakes to learn, and even some of those closest to us are capable of deceit.

Insanity implies disease, and the disease is often because something in mind has become stuck, or the forces of the gravities of ideas have grown out of scale, again from things being stuck together too much -
so it is a matter of intensity, and mal-accretion (repetition);
and that repetition is from stickiness giving extra weight to specific trauma or to desire, hate, laziness, restlessness, and doubt.

I must say that stickiness is very tightly related to intelligence, because intelligence requires that experiences stick in memory, and what we learn sticks together in mind.

mental illness therefore is a disease of intelligence, and the way to deal with it is through bare awareness of each hindrance: bare awareness becomes a middle path between indulgence and suppression. This alleviates the gravity effects (that can become black holes of despair) and it unsticks the stuckness of the fat unhealthy mental globs.

Stupidity, on the other hand, need not be so terrible, less ability should invite less expectation, and more focus on doing simple tasks that are wholesome. (What intelligence exists can still become deranged by trauma though a stupid person is less likely to become stuck except by inability (not knowing how) to proceed.)

During recovery from mental illness, people may be reduced to functional stupidity so that their intelligence can focus more on bare awareness and find the middle way between aversion and suppression.

Anyone is capable of being deceived/manipulated. It only requires an external party with motives other than presented. I doubt that’s a genuine case of stupidity.

In my opinion if one is capable of maintaining a calm, peaceful and healthy lifestyle you are intelligent enough. If this is not possible it might be due to a wide range of factors including the entirety of existence and interpersonal issues.

Stupidity/madness can therefore be forced upon someone and perhaps anyone.

However I feel madness is an unwilling loss of reality, while stupidity is better defined in my opinion as the willful destruction of resources.

Seriously don't know what redgreen is going on about this time but it sounds pretty cool.

I've been both - intellectually disabled from head trauma and schizophrenic also. Schizophrenia puts you on edge and makes you succeed at your insane goals quite well. Intellectual disability puts you in a different circumstance altogether, a very concrete one, like a child but without the energy. Abstraction is nearly impossible when the ID is severe or profound. One lives as a zombie. Schizophrenia is often high energy, but deteriorates the brain over time, leading to ID.

I have rapidly regained unprecedented amounts of brain function from the head trauma, which was 10 years ago. I don't know what's going on really, but I can be sure I've been through a real struggle.

Stupidity is low iq, insanity is low eq. Of course, on the same scale. A low iq insane person will seem more crazy than a high iq crazy person. Although the smarter ones tend to ramble more one.

I think the difference is one knows they are outside the social norms, the other is unaware.

If the insane person was unaware, wouldn't they be considered "stupid" ?

Well then there’s the adage that a normal person thinks they’re crazy. So I’d probably disagree with that. And even if they didn’t know they were crazy that’s be,IMO, more related to emotional intelligence. So not necessarily dumb.

Stupidity is often defined as behavior that shows a lack of good sense or judgment.

Is stupidity a permanent lifetime condition? I've stopped doing many stupid things I once did.

Great replies in this thread.

Thought this was interesting:

When you have  (insanity)  you are confused and do not act rational and when you are stupid, the mind is not powerful enough to reason.
