Stupid People
    #2002014 - 10/12/03 06:47 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

[Sorry for double post.... I posted in pub but meant to put it here. Mods delete pub one if they wish.]

---------------------------------------------

Sometimes I just have to sit back and marvel at how stupid some people actually are. Now I'm as open-minded and liberal as they come, but a STUPID PERSON is a STUPID PERSON. And there's a lot of them about. I'm regularly astonished by the sheer number of stupid people in existance. Whatever happened to natural selection? Survival of the fittest? Surely this doesn't imply that stupid people are more likely to be fit?

They think they're smart. Hell, they're in some of the top jobs. They think their opinion is valid. Each to their own you know, but when something's stupid, it's STUPID. I'm all for free-thinking and all but if someone is plain wrong, shouldn't they be told? Why can't we just tell them they're plain wrong, and they're not smart enough to understand?

Now this can sound hypocritcal cos I'm saying I'm all for free-speech etc yet I'm wanting to silence people. But that's cos they're genuinely wrong. I know it's a crap example, but it illustrates my point easily. Look at homosexuality. What reasonable person would deny another human to do what comes naturally to them and causes no harm to anyone else? Yet we have the fucking church and pope denouncing it, all cos of one stupid little line in the bible. The bible's got an incredible amount of wisdom in it but it's got its glitches, but people can't admit it, they've got to take it all seriously, and even literally for fuck's sake. Don't they know what "parable" means? These stupid people are acting irrationally and offensively, completely at odds with the whole accepting, caring message at the centre of Christianity. Why? Because they're too bloody-minded, illogical and plain stupid to do otherwise.

But I've gone off on a tangent. The general fact is, stupid people are getting away with being stupid and there's nothing we can do about it, cos they've got power. They're powerful and stupid; a deadly combination.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm laying it on with a trowel, but I spent all day yesterday encountering stupid people and I've had enough. I'm a reasonable man but every so often I just need to release the rant...

There's a book out called the Darwin Awards, or something to that effect. It opens with an introduction to natural selection then is full of people that take themselves out of life because of stupidity. I think it had some sketches to go along with them too. It may be in poor taste, but it was pretty funny. I got it from my local library actually.

I totally sympathize with you, man - I had the same kind of week dealing with stupid people and it just made my day to read this. How can you reason with people who are too stupid to understand why they're wrong?

I agree. Every day I'm forced to sit and bask in the stupidity of my fellow students. My god, what the fuck are they doing in college and how the FUCK did they even get accepted in the first place.

I sit in chock and awe when i hear some of the stupid questions these people ask. Worst part is they dont even know it. They think they are asking well formulated and intelligent questions that will get them in good with the professor but in reality they are just fucking stupid.

Never forget that half the population has below average intelligence.

Something I have always had to fight against is the assumption that intelligence equals betterness. It doesn't.

Half the population may have below average intelligence, does that make the other half of the population "better" in some way?

If it does...then what about those of us in the top 1% of intelligence? Does that make us "better" than 99% of the population?

It's easy to look down upon people we deem as less intelligent, while forgetting that we ourselves are less intelligent than some.

Personally it is ignorance that I detest. I can't stand ignorant people, but ignorance is indipendant of intelligence. There are highly intelligent people who are extremely ignorant.

Indeed.  Many prohibitionists are highly intelligent.  But who are we to say that we're any better than ignorant people?

I'd say our society promotes and values the lowest common denominator of intelligence rather than simply catering to it. It's far easier for power structures to exploit the ignorant than informed critical thinkers. Didn't Hitler say something like "How lucky it is for governments that the populous does not think..." That's probably not the precise quote, but it's the idea.

I did not mean to imply that intelligence infers betterness, but rather I was trying to show the subjective nature of how we define intelligence.

For example, I went into a 'reststop/McDonalds' with a friend a few years ago that was staffed by all mentally handicapped people. My friend said something like, "There is no way I am eating food made by retards." I pointed out that it was the highschool dropouts that he needed to worry about. The "retards" were too busy doing their jobs to be thinking about spitting in the food, etc.

I love that paradox... It always twists me pretty good - its like ok so if you admit you're a fool, then that's wise? Then by admitting you're a fool than are you claiming to be wise, therfore becoming a fool? haa nevermind I'm confusing myself

You're equating stupidity with low intelligence. I don't think that's true. There's lots of different types of intelligence. You could be a maths genius but be stupid as fuck in other areas. I'm talking bout stupid as in their views and opinions are stupid. People who can't be reasonable.

if everyone was wiser than yourself your problem would be multiplied.
because then you'd have to do the dirty job that little intelligent and/or ignorant people do.
you'd have a common employ, a time to go, a time to come and everyone else would be making profits on your hard work.
i know sometimes they make us wanna kill them (with pain), but you should think better, actually they are who run the world.
the more intelligent people just manage dumb people.
the most intelligent people manage intelligent people. and so on...
would you really like to be in the lower part of this pyramid?
it's thanks to their hard work that you have all of your goods!
think of the poor indian children stretching your nike soccer ball or whatever...
think of their calloused hands for some miserable bucks enough to barely get food enough in the end of the month.

I'm verbally gifted and reasonably well read so people assume I'm very intelligent. I know tons of people who are much more intelligent then me but they really suck at communicating their knowledge and ideas so they appear somewhat stupid. They mix up words and are easy to mislead with simple rhetorics.

Verbal people have it much easier in life.
