Pathos.  And provide proof that guns take more lives than they save.  The VERY lowest numbers I've seen from a study done on defensive gun uses per year was over 108,000.  The average numbers who die from firearms annually if I recall was around 32-33k in the US with the majority of that being suicides.

Defensive gun use is not proof of your claim. Are you really trying to claim that 108000 people woud have died if they didn't have a gun?  That is laughable because you cannot count hypotheticals. You have no idea how many people would have died without defensive usage.

You need to come up with a number that doesn't exist.

Here's a number 750,000. The tide is turning. People are done with your insane gun culture:

The insurance industry is interested in the FACT that simply owning a gun reduces a person's life expectancy. This is economic/actuarial data to help set rates for life insurance. It is possible gun owners would have higher premiums similar to how smokers pay more.

The next thread OP should make is "Smoking saves lives." It would be equally valid as this one.

I was going to post some statistics showing guns do more bad than good, but then I read this:

birdeatingspider said:
a third principle to remember in analyzing public health gun violence research:

* The right to self-defense does not depend on statistics and numbers.

Doherty makes an important point about the ultimate relevance of any such research studies: “However large the number of DGUs, or how small; and however large the number of accidents or tragedies caused by guns, or how small, the right and ability to choose for yourself how to defend yourself and your family — at home or away from it — remains, and that numerical debate should have no particular bearing on it.”

As I've said before:

Falcon91Wolvrn03 said:
if you own a gun for self defense, that gun is at least four times more likely to be used in an accidental shooting than it is to be used in self defense.

I'm not against guns; I even own one.  But I'm ok with regulations that make the public a little safer from gun violence, just like I'm ok with regulations that make the public a little safer from car accidents.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

Just because you have a right to have a gun doesn't mean you should. That is absurd logic. I have a right to an attorney. Should I go out and hire a bunch of attorneys for my attorney collection.

You have a right to be an asshole. Doesn't mean you should be an asshole and that the negative effects on your life that being an asshole would entail aren't significant.

People have a right to defend themselves with a firearm. That has ZERO relevance to the question of whether it is a good idea to have a gun for self defense. The data clearly shows that gun ownership increases mortality. Gun owners are choosing to endanger themselves simply because there is an explicit right to endanger themselves.

If you own a gun because you have a right to own a gun, you are actually treating your right as if it were an obligation.

No, you literally agreed with me and still don't realize it.

Show me where I agreed with you. Or sit and laugh in your ivory tower, if you're worried that showing me where I agreed with you might lead to me clarifying what you misread.

I'm still waiting for you to show me where there are more deaths from guns than defensive uses.  I even quoted a study heavily criticized for under representing the numbers.  It was criticized enough that even the CDC wouldn't acknowledge it.  I agree with what was said before though.  This is about protecting against tyranny more than anything.

Guns don't kill people kill people.

However GUNS save lives huh? It's not a trained professional operater vs a complete novice who may miss and hit nearby victims and fail to kill the shooter or be confused for the shooter when the police arrive?

I remember an interview with a special forces guy that said if he was in an active shooter situation with his concealed carry, he would attempt to leave the area at all costs and not pull his gun for that very reason.

I know I sure wouldn't. Then again, I don't carry or own a gun. Don't need one.

Who gives a fuck about defensive uses. This thread is about guns saving lives. Provide a number OF LIVES SAVED or gtfo.

Gun owners have shorter lives. You don't need any more info than that.

That's funny, the NRA on their own web site claim to have about 9 million less members than your made up number.
Must be all those millions of illegals who voted for Clinton signed up for the NRA too.:elmo:

The NRA should lose it's tax-exempt nonprofit organization status too.

Those are people who pay membership fees. Pew reports that 14% of gun owners identify as NRA members which would be 14 million.

The NRA has 4 million members. That's 1.5% of the us population. The country has seen first hand the incompetence of the American right. 10 months you have no power. 2 years and the liberals run everything. GOP gerrymandering is being dismantled as we speak. The government of the US will soon reflect the wishes of the liberal majority. :haha:

Guns for home defense are totally reasonable and for sure  part of our rights. You only need a handgun or shotgun though not a 30 round clip on a semi auto. There’s sensible home defense and then there is overkill that can be used for mass shootings. If we think it’s because of overthrowing tyranny we should realize that a few people with machine guns can take on the U.S. military.

It's not a rational decision to keep a gun. That gun makes you less safe. Whether it's your right or not is irrelevant.

And, guns will always fucking exist, its a fact of life. They need to remain legal because criminals who intend to shoot you will always own a gun, and its nice to have a way to legally defend yourself.

Making drugs illegal makes them go away, making gays illegal makes them go away, making immigrants illegal makes them go away, but making guns illegal...doesn't? Republican logic!

My point was that making guns illegal will not make them go away. Therefore they should stay legal so that people who are not criminals can legally get them.

The point at which you agreed with me was when you stated making guns illegal...doesn't? Obviously, sarcasm was implied from your prior two comments about how making drugs and gays illegal makes them go away, as if thats somehow my thinking. So, you agreed with me in saying making guns illegal will not make them go away, even if you didn't intend to. If you can't see where you agreed with me, you are really fucking dense.

If thats not what you were trying to say, you are really bad at wording comments and probably shouldn't try sarcasm anymore because its not for you.
