Myths about gun control

http://www.sas-aim.org/education/ninemyths.htm#*%20Myth%20#1
Here's a snippit for those who don't want to read the whole link:
Data, not histrionics
One-third of Americans live in the 22 progressive states that have reformed laws to allow good citizens to readily protect themselves outside their homes. [26,27] In those states crime rates are lower for every category of crime indexed by the FBI Uniform Crime Reports. [11] Homicide, assault, and overall violent crime are each 40% lower, armed robbery is 50% lower, rape is 30% lower, and property crimes are 10% lower. [11] The reasonable reform of concealed weapon laws resulted in none of the mayhem prophesied by the anti-self-defense lobby. In fact, the data suggest that, providing they are in the hands of good citizens, more guns "on the street" offer a considerable benefit to society - saving lives, a deterrent to crime, and an adjunct to the concept of community policing.

One.
I do not like guns.
Two.
ALl criminals do not want a gun that is registered in the first place. So all gun laws are stupid.
Having a registered gun leads the cops to the person who registered the gun to begin with.
Three.
No criminal wants a gun registered to someone else.
So he will file off the serial number of a particular gun to be used in a crime.
FOur.
There are millions of guns out there with no registration at all.
Hahahahahahaha.. Fuck Charletoinb Heston and the NRA and Moses too.

Trying to talk logic, no matter how much proof in facts you have, to the Extreme Left-wingers is like trying to convince the pope to support abortion. We've had this detailed argument plenty of times with no convincing....

I thought people who wanted guns were left wingers (more personal freedom)? whereas people who want access to guns restricted were more right wing (less personal freedom)?
please explain

liberals, socialists, and Democrates tend to oppose guns and they are on the left of the imaginary center. This is true in the United states, as for other countries i don't know. On the right (if there's only 2 directions) Libertarians, conservatives and Republicans tend to (almost all the time) agree with gun ownership and find it a right as written in the U.S.'s 2nd amendment in the Bill Of Rights.....is that a little clearer?

You have your directions screwed up.. the left, liberals, democrats etc tend to favor less personal freedom and more gov't regulations and programs. One notable exception is abortion, they tend to be prochoice rather then prolife. The right, conservatives, republicans and way to the right are ppl like me, libertarians which tend to favor as much personal freedom as possible, lower taxes etc.

I've heard it put best this way:

And they're pretty much the same on every issue. I think its a conspiracy and they just bitch back and forth to eachother so nothing ever gets done :) I mean really... what do they differ so much on, abortion, thats about it.

One of the only reasons why a country as small as the u.s. has maintained its "freedom" is the largest malitia in the universe. nobody wants to invade a country that has a gun for every citizen.
If anyone comes to my house to hurt my family they will be killed, and that is the way it should be.
other than that...
I learned when I was a kid to respect firearms.
I dont let my kids play with toy guns. alot of people think toy guns are no big deal, but alot of kids get comfortable looking down the sights of a gun and seeing a human, and without thaught squeezing a plastic trigger. I learned to never point a gun loaded, unloaded, real , fake didnt matter a gun is a gun.
I also live in an area where everyone probably has a gun or grew up with a gun in there house.
if even 20% of people carried guns the crime rate would plummit. would you rob somebody if there was a 20 percent chance that they would shoot you? would you pull out a gun in a subway if 20 percent of the other passengers would shoot back?
check history and see what happens to countries that outlaw guns.
If guns are outlawed then only outlaws will have guns.
so go out and get yourself a big fat redhawk 45and take it to the range, unless you are an outlaw

Me too. I also heard a good statement after becoming an adult that I like and believe to be true. It obviously doesn't apply to 3 year olds but here it is:
A child who is taught to respect firearms is no more likely to shoot themselves (or someone else) than they are likely to run out into oncoming traffic on a freeway.

"If guns are outlawed then only outlaws will have guns"
well said....and if there was 20 % people carying gun: yes it is probably true that at first time, there would be more accidents and deaths caused by firearms at first, but after an "evolution", bad guys would deffinitelly be outweight, and that is the most important :)

Just because China is bigger doesn't make the US a small country.

delete the "or someone else" and I'd agree with you.
I know to respect knives, scissors ("don't run with scissors"), ice picks, guns, gasoline, etc. I still want to kill people. My respect for a weapon has no direct effect on my likelihood to commit homicide.

***Just because China is bigger doesn't make the US a small country.***
No it doesn't, but the population of the US is dwarfed by China. China has 363,050,980 men available for military service, the United States has a population about a hundred million less then that. Armed citizenry would be needed if China ever did go to war with us.
***I know to respect knives, scissors ("don't run with scissors"), ice picks, guns, gasoline, etc. I still want to kill people. My respect for a weapon has no direct effect on my likelihood to commit homicide.***
That's you though. You can't take one example and count it as a whole. Switzerland has more guns per capita then any where in the world, they also have one of the lowest murder rates. They're taught about guns at a very early age.
Most people also think murder is wrong, you're kind of in a minority.

True, but I still remain skeptical as to the cause-effect relation between many guns and few murders.

Desire to commit murder is not intent. Nor is discussing desire to commit murder by any means conspiracy to commit murder.

Then why do people in high school who express the desire to kill usually get kicked out? or worse yet get busted for conspiracy?

Because people over-react.
Look, the bare bones of it is that if I walk around saying, "Boy I'd like to kill a human being." That's not a crime.
if I were to say, "I'd like to kill {persons x, y and z}." That's probably a "grey area" that the high school kids you're referring to ventured into.
If I were to say, "I am going to kill {person X}." That is a crime.
Either way I am not in high school and have no concern for ridiculous American high school politics. Oh yeah, and those kids usually have their charges dropped. They'd only get nailed for conspiracy if a "hit list" was found because (apparently) that prooves conspiracy to commit murder.
I want to kill people, please leave me alone.
Also, you could be taking it out of context. I've expressed a desire to kill people, but not necessarily as the crime murder. It'd be in my best interest to kill people legally (in war or as an executioner). No crime there.

Actually the best way to kill people would be to become a judge in the US. Then I could sentence people to death and still be respected. People would say that I'm a "good man", but really I'd just be killing people with my judgements which are simply plausable lies.

I'm sorry your wrong look at this website:
http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html
Brazil has less of a population at 172,860,370 while the U.S. has 270,000,000 people. Antarctica is approx 1.5 times the U.S. but Antarctica is a continent, not a country. Some countries have claimed land in antarctica. The U.S. have reseved right to claim land there as well as many other countries.

The story ends with this - guns are here to stay - there is no getting rid of em. Like heroin, alcohol and republicans. No getting rid of em.
You make em illegal, then the blackmarket will merely respond by flooding them into america illegally.
Criminals are gonna somehow get guns whether they are legal or not.
Either way you lose.
The only way this "problem" can be solved, is by proper firearm education, and by proper I don't mean "this is the trigger - you pull it - gun goes boom".
I personally don't see the point of guns as they are merely tools for murder of some sort or another, but society wants em. Whatcha gonna do?! The sheep have spoken, big brother gonna listen . . .

You have to remember that alot of the people on this site live in a Utopian society (in their minds) that was taught to them by their Utopian parents. I'd give them one Staurday night on the East side of Detroit and ask them if they want a gun..that's if they survive.
Relax, Relax, Relax.....it's just a little pin prick * there'll be no more AARRGGHHH!!!! but you may feel a little sick.....

you're a fucking idiot sometimes.
I don't live in a utopian society. My city's not the safest city at night. I like to go downtown all hours of the night. I like going to unsafe parks in the middle of the night. Sometimes it can be scary. I don't wish I had a gun. The only thing that comforts me is the knowledge that the other guy probably doesn't have a gun, so if he wants to do something, he has to get real close.

tsk tsk tsk....Am i making you mad?..or is it that i'm right? I'll try to avoid getting personal with you because your not worth it.
"I don't live in a utopian society"
Did i say YOU do? I said there are many who, in their mind, think it is possible. Man talk about a guilty conscience..SHESSHH.

Well the only thing that comforts me is that when a loser criminal wants to kill me he will have to decide whether or not i have a gun and could i kill him. And i'm sure in your "society" the criminals wouldn't have guns either...that my friend is very naive!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I don't usually make personally insulting comments like that. You're comment seemed ignorant. I apologize. I agree too, it's not worthing turning things into a flame war.

Actually the one time I got mugged it was at gun point. I was 13 years old. I was pretty sure they wouldn't shoot me in the middle of the street though. I also doubt that the gun was real, but at the time I couldn't tell (it was really dark and they had it against my head), so I wasn't going to take a chance.

Do you think that criminal would think twice knowing that you (i realize you were 13 but think of today) might have a gun?

Kid, im not tryin to dis on u man, but its not smart to assume that most criminals dont pack heat so they would "have to get real close"...u never know man...theres been more than a few instances where i was with someone and they were packing heat and i had no clue they had a gun on them....there was another time i hopped in a frens car and he had a glock-19 on his lap and some others (including a fully automatic M-11) in his trunk....my point is, if theres times when u dont know the person your with is packin, imagine all the strangers out there packin that u dont know about...u dig? peace
