Grandmastafunk said:
I think this is all true.

"Since the acquired desire for knowledge is a right desire, because it consists in wanting what everyone needs, the prescription "You ought to want to seek knowledge" is universally and objectively true-true for all human beings-because it conforms to a right desire that is rooted in a natural need."

But i also think that this belife is the root of all negative acts against one another be it human or non.

I totally agree and would like to follow up that statement with a quote:

"You may remember the story of how the devil and a friend of his were walking down the street, when they saw ahead of them a man stoop down and pick up something from the ground, look at it, and put it away in his pocket. The friend said to the devil, ?What did that man pick up?? ?He picked up a piece of Truth,? said the devil. ?That is a very bad business for you, then,? said his friend. ?Oh, not at all,? the devil replied, ?I am going to let him organize it."
-J. Krishnamurti, 'Truth is a pathless land' (check www.jkrishnamurti.com for more)

Knowledge and beliefs are very different things. If you are very knowledgable, you will likely realize how destructive and limiting beliefs are to your emotions and intellect. Beliefs divide people from eachother and themselves.

The universal truth is far beyond human comprehension, let alone validly expressed through language alone.

But its still fun to gander at the possibilities

An instinct is something that is common between all members of a species. So in that sense it is universal, and the truth born out of it must be universal as well.

Can you think of something that is instinctual but not a characteristic of every member of a species? If so, it isn't instinctual. The two are synonymous.

yeah sure, I'm just disagreeing with your definition of "universal". it's a bit contradictory to say that something that is "common between all members of a species" is universal. I don't consider instincts particular to a species to be a basis for universal truth. and in asserting that a human instinct can be a basis for universal truth (if this is indeed what you are asserting), you are putting human beings above everything else. I think the human experience is a tiny part of the whole and any "truth" we can glean from it is far from universal.

Hello Mr. M! Nice post.

The argument:
When a desire corresponds with a need, it is objectively moral
We need to acquire knowledge, therefore wanting knowledge is objectively moral

Valid, but concerning the premise, these needs appear to be the bottom of Maslow?s Hierarchy- all requirements of and acts directed at survival. So it seems that underlying this morality is the goal of survival- survival of the individual.

Objectively moral behavior = behavior aimed at one?s own survival.

A lot of negativity in the world could be (and is) justified with this percept. ?unless one takes a broad view at what our needs really are- that is, taking into account international harmony, global warming concerns, and the like as needs- goals aimed at our survival. But many of these would not have a direct impact on one?s personal survival, rather the survival of the species as a whole, future generations.

Your objective morality does not appear to require enough altruism for my tastes (Boo Objectivism!).

noone wants suffering, and everyone wants happiness and security...i usually dont like to use universals like 'everyone, etc..." but this is called Universal truths...so

if you can't find the truth right where you are, where else do you expect to find it?

this is the purpose
