that's exactly right. Dec. 25th is not the birthday of Christ, it is the birthday of the pagan god Mithra - Deus Sol Invictus - the Unconquered Sun.

back in those days (before the Gregorian calender and the leap year), the Winter Solstice was on Dec. 24th or 25th, (today it's Dec. 21st or 22nd).
this was a very important day to the sun-worshippers because "after this day, the Sun would begin to stay in the sky longer each day, and there would be less cold, and less night; the Sun would win the battle of night and day".
in other words, the Sun is "reborn" on that day.

check out "Mithra", "Sol Invictus" and "Christmas" under contents.

of course there's more to it than that, but the origin of Christmas can be summed up as a pagan celebration of the winter solstice and the rebirth of the Sun. there are still certain cults and groups that celebrate the winter solstice, like the Chumash indians here in Socal, who have a gathering atop a mountaintop every year. I missed it this year :frown:, but it's a great scene, with amateur astronomers and natives sharing the peak on Mt. Pinos. maybe next year..

:sun:

The post I'm replying to is 16 years old, but I suspect that the OP and many other ethnomycologists here are still interested in the mycological origin of the Christmas tree.

I therefore want to update this tread by mentioning that I just published on Academia.edu a paper titled "An Egyptian Christmas Tree in the Tomb of the Royal Scribe Roy." As the title suggests, the paper explains why the Egyptian plant on the left in the figure below strikingly resembles the Christmas tree on the right.

You can access the paper by going to https://www.academia.edu/s/e93b2bb0cc

As I also initiated a Session that will allow interested people to discus the paper with me,I'm inviting people here to participate in the session. You can do that by signing up for free, and asking me to join the session.

Interesting thread

I’m glad you found it interesting:smile:

what is more interesting is the fact that a few hours ago i read this article: Mysterious Ancient Mushrooms In Myths And Legends: Sacred, Feared And Worshiped Among Ancient Civilization

There it says that ancient Egyptians worshipped mushrooms. Some question marks popped up inside my head
I don't know if there is a scientific evidence to such a claim respectively if psychedelic mushrooms grow in Egypt...maybe they did some thousand years ago

My reply to your post ended up being a lot longer and far more informative than I expected because I want people here to recognize a number of things about ancient Egyptian mycology that very few people have realized yet. I therefore took the liberty of moving this thread over to “Shroomery University.”

Assuming that the moderators don’t object, I’ll answer your question and any questions anyone else may have over there.
