I think that a sauna can be used a cerimonial place. It's just how you approach it, thats all. Anyway, thanks for the call out. BTW>

I disagree with the health risks you are talking of Swami.  People with conditions should not go into a lodges or do any thing that would put them at risk.  It is key  to drink water before during and after a lodge.  Think Of the leader "pourer" its his practice he has atended houndreds of sweatlodges for countless years.  If a person feels ill or to uncomfortable it is there perogative to make it clear that they would like to exit the lodge. 

Hmm the diference with a sauna and a sweat lodge is
1. A) Wealthy old guys sitting in a steam bath wearing white towles, smoking cigars, and reading news pappers.
  B) People in the lodge are comuning with the earth, singing, praying for loved ones while sitting in a circle around glowing hot rocks.

Different strokes for Different folks. :wink:

Bro... you're letting stereotypes interfere with your argument here.
Out of all the times I've walked past the sauna at my gym, I've never once seen "wealthy old guys wearing white towels, smoking cigars, and reading newspapers"... maybe they were hiding in a corner or something.  :rolleyes:

Uh huh. That is why participants are told to move beyond the heat to an internal place where the heat cannot penetrate (or something similar); basically to tough it out.

And of course there is NO peer pressure or competitive spirit. "Gee that old man can take it. I am only in my 20s and fit so should be no problem for me." This in fact, happened to a roommate of mine years ago while studying under a "wise Indian Grandfather." He was in severe crisis for almost an hour and did not know who he was. It could have killed him. It certainly did not enlighten him in any way except to not do it again.

I never once was told to go to some special place and tough it out. If a person feels ill, we all shuflle aside to help the person out of the lodge. We help that person.

I am sorry to hear about your friends expierience. Maybe he hasnt thought about it long enough to have become "enlightened". Maybe he might need to check out a doctor to see if he has some internal problems that he wasnt aware of.

Its all about what works for you to make you think. Some people need guides. Some people only need them selfs.

When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can?t explain, you would not understand.

So I'm currently battling bronchitis (the flu shot ran out weeks ago, here).
I've had fevers off and on... my hands HAVE felt like balloons. Furthermore, I've felt dizzy and have had slight perceptual distortions.
Is this a spiritual experience?
If yes, go fuck yourself. *coughs out lung*

I swam a wide river with a strong current this march. Me and a friend decided to run to the toll booths in town and back. At about three miles we short cut thru a corn field and found ourselves staring across the Kansas river. Instead of turning around, we swam it. After I swam several hundred feet (with shoes on) I was exhausted and nearly frozen. We both almost died. But it was spiritual. Kinda stoopid, but I still have the tollbooth ticket. GOod times.

i think andrew weil wrote about sweat lodge experiences in his book _the marriage of the sun and moon_ (& also about hot peppers, solar eclipses, tripping, etc...)
i think that occasional sweat lodge, sauna, svitz, jaccuzzi, hot tub, etc. can be very healing... (but getting brain/body core temps over 105 degrees F for very long can be dangerous, mmmmkay?)(thus the ice-plunge of the finns, or the frigidarium of the ancient roman baths, or the cold-pool at the svitz...)
& as for "spiritual" --- well, ymmv...

Since I live in the city with the highest crime rate in America, I make daily sacrifices to the God of Ballistics- keeps me from getting hit by stray bullets.  Yup- its the best thing in personal protection since that old man sold me those magic beans that keep tigers away.

Yes, Dr. Weil did write about Inipi ceremonies in his book. I deliberately omitted any medical opinions to see if others could provide them.

And obviously I could have said a lot more about this subject but I don't share my knowledge about such things in an open forum.
