Life is (partly) an asymptotic approach to the unattainable.

that reminds me of a quote, by huraki murakami, my favourite author:
"Humans are immortal in their thought. Though strictly speaking, not immortal, but endlessly, asymptomatically close to immortal. Thats eternal life."

cool. kind of like the inverse of the 2012 concept: progress as a function of time, 2012 as the asymptote
but I think it is exponential, not parabolic. of course, we can't tell at this stage of the game...

It is a conspiracy, I am pretty sure.... something to do with Microsoft, Senator Hatch, and the RIAA...
In my original reply, I was being somewhat serious... There are always going to be catostrophic events that will insert uncertainty into your graph. In a way, these can help bounce a society/population out of a local minimum.

Interesting graph concept however I would have oriented it this way as the early development is slow to the approach and rapidly reaches the asymtote limit I feel we aproach the asymtote later in life rather than earlier. interesting concept but hardly an acurate graph of the actual progresion of advancement but an excellent template or generalization. WR edit the freaking picture I so laboriously reversed did not post but I think ya'll get the idea

You know what I just noticed. So many supposedly enlightened minds here and yet there hasn't been anything great to come out of all the big ol discussions where you divulge the secrets of the universe. Instead everything ends with a *thud*.
Ever noticed that?

That graph is incorrect. The line should be merged with the dotted asymptote.

Haha yes, it's an unapproachable line on a graph. Let me rephrase that then: The graph should depict the solid line straight across IN PLACE of the asymptote.

No... I got it right. Only an egotist would actually think they could merge with or cross the asymptote of the unattainable.

Now you're missing my point. Everything is already perfect and complete. The unattainable does not exist, because it is just that: unattainable. There is no reason to reach for perfection or completeness because you're already there. If you are reaching, you're trying to get someplace that doesn't exist, which is... impossible. Edit: Here's a better explanation: It's like a blind man being inside a house while wanting to get inside the house. "Goddamnit let me in!" as he stands in the kitchen of the house. He's already there, but no one is around to tell him.

I suppose I'm referring to the common concept of perfection and completeness. However, survival, is most definitely unattainable in the end... no matter how you look at it.

Absolutly,It is absolutly impossible to reach the absolute.Your asymtote absolutly demonstrates this (absolutly joking )but doesn't the asymptote create a shadow of the absolute in parallel(or nearly as one is higher on the graph)?does this not create an absolute vector effectively creating a simultaneous "shadow" absolute whose vector logrhythmicly approaches parallel? The root of imperfection lies at a slope which approaches but cannot reach perfection Cool thought Your almost approaching spirituality via pragmatism,as they say "All roads lead to Rome" Mine was particle and astro physics. In the example of the graph above, sum 1/x for all positive integers x. If I take the limit of the summation, I do indeed get a value. However, if I try to calculate that value through the summation, I will never be able to obtain the value, but isntead only a very close aproximation.

they're called aloha shirts and - tourists notwithstanding - they are worn by all sorts of local folk to church, special events, lu'aus, etc... they aren't 'garish', they're just colorful. I'm sick of homosexuals and frat boys co-opting hawaiian culture.

Let me be more clear with what I meant by that.
A moment in which you are travelling at the speed of light does not and will not exist. Therefore such a moment is unattainable. This does not preclude something else from travelling at the speed of light (mainly light ). Thus the speed of light exists ONLY because it is attainable by light itself. We may observe that it exists, but not from our own experience of that speed. Something may travel much faster than the speed of light in thought or in theory, but until something demonstrates this speed physically, for all intents and purposes it does not exist.
Hey look! I'm capable of materialist reduction, too!
Of course, ironically, anything and everything exists in thought or theory.

Nope... though it is an interesting take on how "Stability" factors into the equation. Stability, too, is (generally) an unattainable, though there are brief moments of stability... they do not qualify for Stability-with-a-capital-S.
Moving on to Graph 3.4d....
