Whats causes excessive pinning. I saw a casing it was four quarts of popcorn cased with 100% coir. 1000 pins!(not good)!I'm thinking its the coir.

Just a really good pinset and the genetics of the substrain. Not much you can really do about it. It does suck, however, to have to pick all those (along with all the aborts!)
That doesn't really happen with straw, however....

The casing couldn't support all those mushies to grow out. What would you rather have 1000 1/2" mushies or 50 bigguns?

I agree, but how do you reduce a pinset?? I never could figure this one out. I guess you could intentionally do worse job casing it.... -- Micro

I was low on verm on my last batch and I used mostly coir with a tiny bit of oyster shell and I think it might be TOO friendly to mushies the same thing happend to me it was a pain in the ass but on the other hand it was a huge flush but they were rather weak stemed shrooms tall and thin

this is not really advanced,
almost all the casings i have ever made have pinned like crazy, mostly aborts. This really isn't a problem, just pick off the big ones and leave all the tiny tiny aborts to be 'consumed' by the mycelium before the next flush.
i think the reason behind the massive pinset is the time you put it on for fruiting. I'm assuming you waited for the mycelium to colonise the casing layer before fruiting it. If you fruit it just as the first signs of mycelium poke through the casing, you shouldn't have this problem; though in my experience, it is better to have excessive pins that abort than too few pins.
According to the cultivator, you will get a higher wet weight with many small fruits as opposed to a few big ones.
