Submit your incubator set-up!
    #498870 - 12/22/01 10:54 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I am not happy with my current set-up for my jar incubator. I currently use a Rubbermaid container filled w/ water. In the water I have an aquarium heater. I set my jars on a shelf so that they are submersed to 1-2 inches. My problem is that out of 16 jars, 13 show signs of taking on water and thus preventing mycelial growth. I believe water drips from my lid onto the tops and leaks into the jars through my innnoculation holes.

I would like everyone to submit their incubation set-ups so that I may choose a better set-up. I am interrested in a dry set-up.

Thank you for your submissions,
Joshua

Cardboard box, alluminum foil on the bottom of the inside of the box, piece of cloth on top of the alluminum foil, heatpad under the cardboard box. Oh, and holes on each side of the box with fliter patches over them although it doesn't really do much. I just fold the top of the box in and put a quilt over it. Its in my closet and the cardboard box doesn't stand out any. Nothing special, but it works : ) The alluminum foil wasn't put in there for any real reason, it just ended up in there somehow. It seams to help heat the area evenly though.

best thing i've found so far is somthing my buddy ar393 suggested.

take a 18 gal rummbermaid, then take a small long narrow rummbermaid container fill it with water, throw in a 100% submersable fish tank heater into the small rubbermaid, drill a small hole in the corner of the rubbermaid for the cord to go in, seal that hole with the cord air tight with hot glue or somthing similar, make sure the small rubbermaid is air tight. place jars on top of small rubbermaid in the big rubbermaid. calberate so it's set to 84F... you're all set. the water inside evaporates very little if filled the whole way and sealed air tight.

This may seem a bit complicated , but it works great for my fraind , no more rusting lids or dealing with water on your jars or condensation all over your incubator . He found this tek around here somewhere unsure who the credit goes to. All you need is to have a submersable water pump ( small one ) from any hardware store just tell them what size tank you have. You also need your fish tank heater one that goes up to 93 degrees a small bucket or container that will fit bolth water pump and heater. Also plastic hosing the type used in the hummidifer teks on this site. He started by burning two holes in the bottom of his cooler or you can drill large enough to fit your tubing , tubing should be at least 6 ft long . Connect the tubing to the water pump run into one of the holes you made in the cooler run all around the inside of the cooler then back out through the other hole and back into the bucket. Fill the bucket with water and turn pump and heater on . The water will hit about 93 degrees and run through the hose and create about 84-86 degrees of non drying heat ,its really not all that difficult and well worth it , you can contol the desired temp using the fish tank heater control .

35 gallon Sterilite. Sitting on top of a reptile heating pad for a ten gallon sized aqaurium/terrarium. (It resembles a water bed heating pad.) The pad cost $15.00.
No water in the incubator.
86 degrees all the time.

Happy Holiday Necron...
Ive decided to go the way of a heat rock/pad instead of the aquarium heater (all that condensation is a pain in the ass, IMO anyway). I was thinking along the lines of a heat rock covered by a layer of a heat conductive material. Any suggestions? I tried the same thing basically with the aquarium heater but cracked the fuckin thing. Now "shredder" (my red-eared slider) no longer has a heated swimming pool. Haaa

Happy Holidays to you too Billy.

I would think that covering a heating rock with a towel would do just fine.
I'm very happy with the heating pad I use. They come in different sizes to fit all size reptile terrariums. They really look exactly like a waterbed heating pad except that you don't have to worry about cooking it if it's not covered by water.
It puts off nice gentle warmth so as not to bake your reptile. Or in this case, mycelium.....
It fits perfectly under the size aquarium it's fitted for and heats evenly across the pad. It fits under my 33 or 35 (I can't remember which) gallon Sterilite container almost perfectly.

I used a similar method previous to my current method. I found that the heat radiated well, but forced the moisture away from the side nearest the heat source causing uneven heating. When looking at my jars a few days into the set-up I could visualy discern one side of the jars being too dry, while the other side was too wet.

My setup is quite simple.
It consists of a large rubbermaid container. To heat I use a 50 gallon fish tank heater which is inside an empty Hydrogen Peroxide bottle filled with water and H2o2. I turned the dial a couple times and it keeps the Rh around 80% in there and the heat remains at 85 degrees F consistently. For insulation I wrapped a blanket around the outside of my rubbermaid along the sides. Since the gap in between the heater and the bottle top is very small, I only have to top it off with water about once every three weeks. Very little evaporates.

I don't know how much you guys pay for all that rubbermaid stuff, heaters, etc, but my setup cost about $150 US (including shipping) from an auction.

I use this wicked tek that works just as good as all these other teks with aquairium heaters etc.

Its called the "Airing Cupboard Tek". It involves putting my quart jars in large storage containers inside an airing cupboard with a temperature of around 75-80. It works a charm.
