Advanced Incubator Idea
    #992064 - 10/25/02 09:58 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

as for incubators.. i think water bath incubator gives a better was of keeping jars warm... but what is the price... well.... not to critizise other peoples stuff... i think im gonna have to point out a few things...

http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm

gives us a good example of the idea at work...

draw back... yes... evaporation... if it were in a sealed container then there should be no evaporation...

my idea is to use commonly advailable material and makeing a more efficient water incubator.... what does that mean.. well.. after i make my impulse sealer ill take pics of the process of how im gonna do it...basically what it is.. is that im gonna take 6 mil plastic sheeting... and makeing a water jacket almost inside of a styrofoam cooler or some other container that is good at keeping warmth in... that means im gonna need a submersable heater.. and some thinking on how things are gonna work.. like.. there is gonna have to be an opening so you can fill it with water and where the power cord is gonna come out... geeze that is complicated.. but if you can pressure cook stuff at 15 psi and still keep all your stuff sterile... then this is a walk in the park...

i figure you can get thick plastic bags and seal them with water and heater... but to fit specific dimentions i want it to be custom.... gonna have to measure out the plastic... seal ends with home made sealer... and end result should fit into cooler.. and since heat can be radiating from all sides of the cooler... getting a 86f mark is easy with a low powered heater...

ill get back you on the construction.. but what do you guys think?

While this is true, it isn?t such a great drawback. I have to refill around 2 quarts of water every 4 weeks.

well... the reason im thinking about this is because i want even heating... and even tho evaporation isnt bad.. .so is crap growing in the water... atleast in a contained system you wont have to worry about it... but its really not needed.. just trying to share my ideas...

Yes, eventually. It takes a long time, and leaves a nasty residue that is just about impossible to get rid of. I hope your not thinking of using veg oil in your incubator. Very bad idea, IMO.

i've made a warm air incubator that uses a 50 watt black light installed into a short length of 6" plastic pvc as the heat source... a 6" duct booster fan easilly slipped over the pvc to move the air... a simple control cycles the light... 2 small filtered holes allow for a small amout of heat to escape to prevent overshooting it maintains +/- 1 degree f with no problems at all... after looking at fungifun's setup, i feel i've "over built" what i work with... i learn something new all the time here... water baths make so much more sense... thanks for this post... peace

i bet thats a good idea for a larger grow... but what about power consumption... even tho it may be a little.. it all adds up

nope... no large grow op here ... but ur right to consider power consumption requirements... i figure running flat out the systen will use somewhere in the area of 125 watts... of course once stable temps have been reached the light will cycle lowering ur load to about 75 watts, at least with the booster fan i use... i would imagine they all use about the same amount of power... cycling can be controlled by adjusting the release of air from the box... this can easilly be adjusted for once u reach setpoint... i use layers of surgical gauze... works great. i'll add that the holes are needed due to heat the small shaded pole motor generates... what might seem like a small amount of heat adds up fast at setpoint... once i pick up a camera i'll post a pic somewhere in an appropriate forum for anyone who might be interested in it... but i still feel the water bath is the cheapest route... let me know ur thoughts...

i wanted to add that fungifun is a cool site in itself... i need to spend a little time checking it out more... again... cool post...

peace

well we're incubating glass jars right... not growing out... what water? and the bulb wattage can probably be as low as 25 watts and work well... i've used this for awhile with no problems whatsoever... if i were to do it all over again and didn't have the items i needed lying around i'd probably put together the water bath setup in ur link... peace!

ps: i wouldn't mind looking at ur impulse sealer project...

hrmm... so a heat setup from a light source will be sufficient... 25w ehh.... hrmm... sounds good.... but so far... i guess i dont have the stuff lieing around to make it with... maybe one day i will....

An alternative to the cooking oil idea is mineral oil. I know people have used it for building liquid cooled computers, its non conductive, much thicker than water, and probably evaporates at a higher temp.

Okay,
I'm late on this thread but hows abouts some detail on that homegrown impulse sealer? What temps would you need on the "sealing bars"? What type of metal would be most efficient(don't say gold or silver)? How much current at what amperage? In relation to the dimensions of and type of metal?
Used to have a buddy who was a wiz at this type 'o shit. Showed me how to run current through a wire to make an excellent styrofoam/plexiglass cutter. . Been 9 years though.

i was hopeing someone with a ee degree will help me out here... but i guess not..

the metal that gets hot is nichrome.... so get nichrome ribbon... i also know that nichrome is used in my kiln just as it is... with a resister switch.... then connected to 110v line.... i would say from here on its dangerous....

WARNING !! DONT PLAY WITH HOUSE ELECTRICITY !!

so... i got aluminum hollow squares as my frame.... cause i expect the elements to be hot.... real hot... but since we are going to use it for like a second or so, we dont have to worry about the nichrome ribbon melting aluminum.... of course teflon is used so that the nichrome is not touching anything else... and of course teflon melts at 350 - 400f.... well.. i think it is... i dont want to open my book-o-parts and check it out...

well.. ill have more details when the danm wires and teflon comes in... and ill have a write up and pics to go with it so you can make a 5' sealer... lol.. maybe not that big...

hrmm... after replying... i read the topic.. and shit... lol... wrong post.... bleh.. whatever...

if your whole idea is even heating, you could put a computer fan in the system. If you had a fishtank heater in a jar with a lid on it, and a grommit in the lid to seal the heater in, you wouldn't have evaporation. The air movement of the fan would even out the heat just like a real forced air incubator.

thats a good point...

but i was trying to achieve heating with only water heater and with what i allready have...

there should be a faq about the most efficient way.. the most cheapest.. and most simplest way to make incubator....
