Supporting the Episcopal church for once!!!
    #1785909 - 08/06/03 07:24 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

For the first time in 12 years, my family and I will be attending church this sunday, to show support for the Episcopal church making the right descision on their openly gay priest. I wish all of you who care to do the same, I'd just like to send a message to whomever in the church cares that the people are happy, and I hope some of you shroomerites will choose to go to church and show some support too.

What has happened there, concerning the new Bishop, is a wonderfully fine example of the Art of Acceptance !

Atleast he's openly gay, and not secretly molesting children.

And as for swami being a homophobe....  they once did this study on people convicted of hate crimes against gays. They were hooked up to sensors and bombarded with sexual images. The vast majority got errections only from the gay images.

He's going in direct opposition of one particular facet of the religion he not only claims to be part of, but claims to understand well enough to teach to others.

Just another fucking hypocrite... and he adheres to organized religion, to boot.

Honestly, I feel anyone should be able to do what they want. The gays can be gay, the straights can be straight, and the bi's can be bi. For some reason large masses of people have a hard time accepting that. Homophobia is the first sign of being gay!

I don't give a fuck about homosexuality. I just see no reason to applaud a man who's a hypocrite and a priest, just because he's also gay.

I concur.. why support the church based on the sole reason that they have a gay priest... don't they teach against that in the first place? What difference does it make? Does anybody really care? Does anyone find it funny? I think the church in general is a good laugh.

shroomism: "your blatant mockery is just deplorable"

I see. Mainstream religion is fair game, but 2012, alien, interdimensional dogma is sacrosanct.

Yeah, excuse my general ignorance of religion, but isn't this bishop going to hell, and doesnt that slightly defeat the point of him being a bishop?

Not that followers of the bible pay much attention to what's written in it anyway.

I think you're missing the point --- this is NOT about applauding a MAN whose "hypocrite and a priest" --- this is about acknowledging and appluading the Episcopal Church for taking a very liberal and accepting stance.

Yes, indeed, most religion, especially in this day and age is laughable.  But let us not forget that the Bible has become a mess as a result of translation and subjectively beneficial interpretation.  The same people who interpreted the Bible to claim that "God says homosexuality is wrong" were probably prone to homosexuality themselves.

If this man chooses to be or simply *IS* (depending on your stance) homosexual -- who is anybody to say that he is being a "hypocrite" because he is teaching something in the subjective manner by which *he* interprets it?

You calling him a "hypocrite" for being a leader of the church would be like me telling you to get out of the country for doing drugs and disobeying the laws of supposed "morality" (and yes, I quoted the word simply for redundancy)

Okay.. I feel better now.

I don't mean to be an ass -- I just feel like strongly stating this opinion.

:crazy2:

They do teach against it, but the pope himself appoined this guy. Thats all the endorsement I need. Christianity, judaism, muslims, indian religions they all really do worship THE creator. The same creator. They just squable over his will. I never really followed christianity, but I for one -will- go pay homage to the creator. Even if the place I choose to do it in is a tad misguided.

The pope did? I think you're thinking of Catholicism. This is the Anglican (Episcopal) church. Their spiritual leader is the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams.

So we should applaud the Episcopal Church for placing a man who their own holy book states is going to hell in a position as a spiritual leader?

Quote:

But let us not forget that the Bible has become a mess as a result of translation and subjectively beneficial interpretation.

The only people who really KNOW what the bible says are the people who know the original language and have access to the original scripts. For those that do not possess either of those, they have merely the vast assortment of various translations available in their language. Yes, there might be some sort of vast translator conspiracy which means everyone is misrepresenting the passages regarding homosexuality, but that seems to be much more far-fetched than to state that the passages really DO condemn homosexuality.

Where you could have an argument would be to suggest that the original writers of the bible decided to condemn homosexuality, and added it in when they wrote their individual contributions.

Selectively ignoring portions of a book someone claims to be the holy guide to life, the universe, and everything... so he's basically saying the book is the guide to life, except for the parts that condemn what he does?

Next we'll see serial rapists and child molestors becoming priests.

The difference here is clear: I do not hold up the laws of this nation as being the ultimate guide to life and truth - especially the laws regarding controlled substances. In fact, I tend to reject them.

As for morality: Morality? good one.

Ok, that really was my fault for opening my mouth about the pope before I knew what I was talking about. House of Bishops I meant.

As for child molestors becomming priests... you can pretty much insert your own comment here.

You and swami are so negative. So what if the bible preaches some ass backwards things. It is a translation of a manuscript of a guy whom wrote what he saw as the will of god. Correct, incorrect. It hardly matters. Even how you are worshiping the creator is irrelevant. I'm just trying to show the church itself that what they're doing is right. So they condemn homosexuality? I'll bet the episcopal church is for one NOT going to be giving that sermon anymore.
