yes, but it doesnt stop me. the only reason i would say no is for survival, but we're over populated and not good for the earth. can u imagine how many animals would still be alive if we added up all the food we waste? it would be nice if animals were treated with respect.

Is it moral to be a carnivore?

First of all, humans are omnivores, not carnivores. Secondly, I feel very strongly that eating meat in this day and age is one of the most completely immoral things we could do.

Let me clarify that a little bit...

I don't think that going out in the woods and shooting a deer to feed and/or clothe yourself is immoral in any way. I do think, however, that eating meat and other products that have come from animals in the factory farms of today's American society is just plain sick, inhumane, and morally wrong.

It is not only immoral because of the way the animals in these factory farms are treated, but because

1. We could solve world hunger if we gave up meat in our diets

and

2. We could also solve some major environmental problems by doing this, as well.

READ:

Diet For a New America by John Robbins

and

Animal Liberation by Pete Singer

(The second book deals specifically with the morality of eating meat in today's society.)

Peace,

RebelSteve

well, to start with, I had to read fast food nation for a class last semester. so I understand that the slaughtering/ meatpacking industy is... hard to defend, to say the least. I certainly wouldn't want to. however, circumstances being as they are, I think that it's judgemental and unreasonable to hold the general public morally responsible.

I've got some vegan friends (one works in an organic food co-op and one is getting her phd in enviromental studies) who are really dedicated to this whole.. well, vegan thing.

although they usually approach the subject from a health perspective, there is obviously this strong moralistic subtext. regardless, I don't agree with either approach. first, humans need meat for our brains. no, really, we do. therefore, the second question, the morality issue, is really answered by the first. vegans insist that meat is in no way necessary. since I disagree with this premise, eating meat (both killed in a natural fashion or SS style) is moral.

I disagree. The largest famines during the 20th century were actually caused by socialism, not by true lack of food or too much meat in the diet.

The people who starve today do so because they are poor, not because other people eat meat. And poverty is a political problem, it has very little to do with diet.

Yeah, cows produce a lot of methane... but they also produce habitat for shrooms, which is nice

"1. We could solve world hunger if we gave up meat in our diets"

there is a particular vitamin found *only* in meats. without it, our minds go crazy and start shutting down, but it does take a while...

you do realize that there's far more than enough food already, yes? It's a matter of distribution. There are enormous heaps of rotting food all around the world- attempts to keep the prices of grains higher.

one of the favorite professors on the ultra-reaganite-reactionary side of the spectrum at a college i attended many years ago had on the optional reading list of a course on soviet political theory Paul Harrison's "Inside the Third World." amazing book. I gave up meat altogether for some 10 or 15 years after reading it.

did you know . . . well . . .

1lb beef protein requires some 100 times the energy to produce when compared to 1lb of grain protein or some such. it's a small world.

the vitamin is B12, defined as cyno-cobalamin...
however, there certainly are sources of other bio-available forms of the cobalamin complex (hydoxy-cobalamin, etc) which can be found in non-meat sources (such as seaweed, wheat germ, many sprouted seeds, and a few others...), not to mention taking B12 supplements in pill form...
~
and what about the nutrients than can be found only in vegetables, & not in meat?
~
eskimos used to live on meat only-diets, and they had some of the shortest human life-spans in modern times (as well as admitedly living in some of the harshest climactic conditions to be found on the planet; and one of the best ways to get the old caloric intake up near 6000kCal/diem is by eating lots of meat --- fish, seal, whale, caribou, polar bear (unless the polar bear gets you  ...), etc.)...
~
if meat is included as part of an ideal "omnivore's diet", it should probably make up 5% of total caloric intake (like back in the old stone age --- the vast majority of daily caloric intake was from the gatherers, rather than the hunters...) --- maybe a few ounces of meat, a couple/three times per week...
~
the "all american diet" with sausage or bacon for breakfast (with eggs, okay & hash browns), and a cheeseburger (& fries) for lunch, and then a nice couple slices of roast beef or pork chops for dinner (yeah, with a baked potato & butter and sour cream, yummm) is most likely a recipe for personal and planetary disaster...
~
when my kids are all grown & flown from the nest, i may well go back to a most-o-the-time vegetarian diet... (when i'm cookin' at starwood fest, my soup kitchen in the trees is runnin' on veggies, lemme tell ya...)
~
ymmv...

I hear Mr_Mushrooms is quite the fan of dog stew!  According to him, mutts are much better eatin' than pure-breds.

Perhaps he'd like to share a few of his favorite recipes... Although it seems as if he's boycotting this forum for some reason!

I wouldn't call it puppy sushi.  Sushi is vegetables and vinegarred rice.  Sashimi is raw meat served with sushi rice.  That is a puppy in a bun.  With skin/fur and all organs and blood present, I'd say it falls quite far from being either sushi or sashimi and just a puppy in a bun.   hehe

If the puppy was raised for food, I wouldn't say it's wrong.  If you stole the dog from someone's front yard...I'd say it was wrong.

Love & Light,

Boppity
