Hypothetical human life worth question
    #13808413 -

Say there was a discovery of a substance that significantly increased the lifespan of a human, but the substance is very limited.

In your opinion who would deserve to have this over another?
What would qualify a person to have more worth than another?

It would be a triumph for the legal system: finally there would be no escaping into a, easy, comfortable death for prisoners who were sentenced to several normal lifetimes of imprisonment. :monkeydance:

Great, and how much more would that end up costing us tax-payers?

I thought of that same thing, it would really turn people into law-abiding citizens, especially when they come out with a documentary on a guy that served 255 years... Only when this substance would become abundant enough that there would be enough for everyone.

By how much would it increase their lifespan? and how limited would the supply be? I dont think everybody would necessarily want to increase their lifespan, depending on just how many years we're talking about. Regardless, I think scientists, and others working towards the betterment of our planet deserve to be around longer, so that they can continue to improve life for those that come after us. Perhaps a select few politicians who actually know what they're doing too.

i thought of warcraft.
who has the most hit points ?
the hero.
and.. he takes reduced damage from all types of attacks.

so..
what seemed to be a very difficult question to answer is now quite simple for this raging nerd here

say 50+ years.

I get what you're getting at with picking the scientists etc.. but wouldn't that increase of time have some sort of effect on the subject psychologically? I mean, say the scientist is of course very intelligent but has a negative outlook or persona.

I don't know the answer to the question but I'm thinking some sort of test, but who would be qualified to create the test or even judge who would get this privelage?

No one IMO.

Nothing IMO.

But what would happen is the same thing that happens to scarce items today.  The richest get them.

I suppose whoever creates/discovers the substance has the right to make the test. I wonder what the test could entail though, there's so many different aspects of what makes a human worthy or unworthy of an extended lifetime.

The idea of only the rich getting their hands on this is very realistic, as unfortunate as that is..

Besides this obvious (and correct) answer, I would think people who most closely have my value system and are most able to support my value system would be the most worthy.

The rich getting it was the answer I thought was going to be the one said most which underlines one of the biggest problems of our society, instead of working together as a species most seem to try and rise over another, which may bring us to almost complete annhilation. IMO

The rich would be the only people who could afford it. Supply vs. demand, basic economics.

Who do I think should get it? No one.

Interesting.. This is a consequence of the increase of human life expectancy that is likely to occur during this century that I had not considered.. Now if life extension is a scarce and expensive process, surely prisoners wouldn't be high on the list of recipients, but what if it were to become ubiquitous? What if you have someone sentenced to life, but there are now readily available cures to all known diseases and effects of aging? How then are the ethics of letting a prisoner die of "old age" different then letting them die from an easily treatable condition today just because they are a prisoner?

What crime is worthy of damning someone to a hypothetical eternity in a cage? Do we just start implementing the death penalty more, or do we let the serial killer free because his 500 years are up?

Granted, I think by the time this kind of medical technology is widespread, we will probably exist in a radically different social climate, so it's difficult to hypothesize about..

What about people who's idea's and knowledge of how things work and have turned our world up side down? Like advanced physicists and scholars like Albert Einstein, or allowing some one like Stephen Hawking to being able to Finnish his work on decoding a black hole a fundamental building block of how the universe works and can exist

how about people who have the gift to invent materials to drastically improve our way of life?

like Craig Venter who created a synthetic life form and can map and re map and "program" if you will... DNA and have it or allow it to do or give or create traits we could find in benefit to the human race? (remap the human DNA so EVERYONE ...(newly born that is not you or I) can live longer) you could use that technology to create people. or give people who have predispositions to health issues genetically (i.e. heart disease Alzheimer ect...) a clean slate... a new bill of health and wiping genetic impurities from the human race... would these sort of people not be able to benefit the entire human race by being given extra time to continue there work?
