Psychology report on shamanism

I'm doing a big report in my psychology course and I'm thinking of maybe trying to base it around shamanism. I don't really know which way I'll go about it yet. I could either write about how shamans would be viewed in western culture as being schizophrenics or i could go about how shamanism can help a person psychologically. If anyone has any interesting information related to this topic id love to hear it. Or if anyone has a creative idea for an angle that would be great to hear too.

If you are going to talk about shamanism, magic or witchcraft, you may want to take a browse around some cultural anthropology stuff, combining both psych and anth together in a report will show breadth of reading/knowledge.. I've got some useful slideshows I can share with you on the subject (I was educated by Oxford Anthropologists last semester).  Carl Jung's Flying Saucers covers the topic of what the myths mean - another angle on withcraft (check out Azande WC) and the comparisons our western view of "bad luck".

A good (though not academy approved author) is Carlos Castandea, his adventures with Don Juan the shaman gives good insight into what sorcery is; medicinal uses of plants.

Thanks man, really appreciate the information. I'm going to definitely want to start off by assessing common myths about shamans. Hopefully I'm taken seriously with my project.
