As I see it sometimes the person has a compulsion which is hard to resist for them.I think it depends on the situation but he still bears some responsibility but sometimes people need help getting better.

Well that's nice that you have worked so hard to post like you do. However such attitudes are not welcome in S&P. So leave the "insults" that you so masterfully weave out of your posts, in here

but this isnt about discussion quality is it? its about egos, mod icons, and control.

Actually, it is :smirk:

its about egos
Nope, wrong thread! You're thinking of ss7's thread: "Keeping the ego in check?"

mod icons
What? You mean that little "M"? I wasn't aware that we were discussing that.

and control.
Yes, yes. I'm an evil nazi dictator. I've heard this all before :smirk:

soylent.. I was refering to the demented police-state mentality of monitoring the entire family of a convicted rapist for other potential bad apples. This is logic served on a platter of fascism and somebody posting on a drug site should know better.

the entire family wouldn't be convited of rape, mabey it had nothing to do with the family. but the chance of having abusive parents is higher than normal, so why not question them? they may just be ordnary parents. but if checking up on the family stoped just one abusive parent. it would be worth while.

---Families are allready questioned (when it is relevent), but that has no bearing on a woman who has allready been raped. When questioning the family is irrelevent, it would only drain police resources.

The government, (canadian) allready attempts to monitor and prevent abuse, and abusive parents (when caught) generally lose their children to the government. But....that doesnt often help anything.

Mix, try this phrase when disagreeing with another:

"You're sick and obsessed."

That one seems to slide under the radar.

If a rapist, as a boy (say 20 years previous to being a rapist), is beated as a child, then this instills the value that 'Physical Violence is an all encompassing solution to frustration when a better method of problem solvement is unavailable to the person commiting the act (of violence)'. Agreed?

It does seems as if those who are abused as children, especially sexually, never quite get over their anger and can carry that burden throughout their entire life, frequently lashing out at others over trivial matters.

While it is a powerful negative influence it can be worked through with professional help.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Swami.

Everyone has some kind of negative issue they grow up with in their childhood that has the possibility of causing them to take anger out on someone else when they are adults.

Everyone has the same opportunity to get counseling or do something to lessen the effect of that negative issue, whether the issue has to do with molestation, physical abuse, whatever.

By not choosing to get help, by choosing to act out based on the negative issues that impact us as children, we choose to let the negative issues impact us, and consequently society through us.

Hmmm.  That sounds terrible.

If I am abused physically as a child, and I grow up to hurt others as a result, that is still my choice.  I could have chosen other courses of action alternatively to hurting others.  Many who are abused don't grow up to abuse others.

If someone is abused, and he hurts others, such as by rape, lock him up, but by all means offer him counseling while he is in jail.  He is ultimately responsible for his actions, regardless of what caused him to act in that way in the first place.  Abuse in early childhood only provides an explanation as to why someone acts abusively as an adult.  It's not an excuse.

this argument seems to ignore rapists who were not battered as children... like those soldiers in iraq, buttraping prisoners with flashlights
