Some New Fungal Finds...
    #12706082 -

While visiting my folks today, I took a nice long walk around their 52-acre, woodland property.  This thread contains pictures I took of the many, interesting fungi I found during my hike.  Most of them I have identified, but if you see any errors in my ID's, please let me know!  I'm definitely trying to learn here.  At the end are some species I was unable to put a name to, and I'd appreciate any help in doing so.

1.  Dead Man's Fingers (Xylaria polymorpha)

The flesh inside these "fingers" was white, as the link shows it should be.

2.  Ochre Spreading Tooth (Steccherinum ochraceum)

3.  Elegant Polypore (Polyporus varius)

The black section at the base of the stem helped me make the ID.

4.  Corrugated-cap Psathyrella (Psathyrella rugocephala)

Gill shot of mature specimen:

Spore print was a dark, purplish-brown just like my book said it should be.  I can't believe this thick, sturdy mushroom is in the same genus as the next species!  And Coprinus had to be broken up into separate genera?  I think taxonomists are un poco loco!

5.  Common Psathyrella (Psathyrella candolleana)

Spore print of these light-colored mushrooms was a surprising purplish-brown, as it should be for this species.

6.  Parasola auricoma  (I think!)

7.  Orange Mycena (Mycena leiana)

I've come across this species a lot... It's one of my favorites!

8.  Pinwheel Marasmius (Marasmius rotula)

This little cluster of mushrooms was so cool-looking!  The picture does not do it any justice.  For some reason my camera wants to white-out anything I try to photograph that is white or light colored.  Anyone know a trick to avoid this??

9.  Gymnopus dryophilus (I think!)

This ID is a big maybe... The spore print was white, though, as my book says it should be.

10.  Black Jelly (Exidia glandulosa)

My mom thought this was animal scat when she first saw it.  I got pretty excited when I realized it was actually a fungi!

11.  White-egg Bird's Nest (Crucibulum laeve)

12.  Coral Slime (Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa)

13.  Flat Crep (Crepidotus applanatus)

This ID is basically just a best guess, as I did not obtain a spore print.

14.  Yellow Fairy Cups (Bisporella citrina)

This ID is also very uncertain, but I honestly did not find anything else that it could be.  The only other thing that came close was Golden Jelly Cone (Guepiniopsis alpinus), but this does not grow east of the Rocky Mountains!

15.  Unknown Coprinoid:

I thought this one would be easy, but the hairy stem really threw me off.  And the cap looks nothing at all like pictures of atramentarius.  I'm clueless... Please help!

16.  Unknown shelf-like mushroom:

I'm clueless with this one, too... It was stalkless, gilled, and almost furry around the edges, as you can see.  I did not collect a specimen to spore print, unfortunately.  I thought I'd find it easily by sight in my field guide, but I can't find anything like it!

17.  Unknown LBM:

Unfortunately my pic is not very good... These guys actually had rusty-brown caps that were slightly granular/textured.  The stem and gills were almost a pale yellow.  Stems were thin, but tough/fibrous.  Spore print was a rusty brown like the cap.  Caps were only about .5" across.

The closest thing I could find was Phaeomarasmius erinaceellus, but this should not be fruiting until August.

Any help/comments/advice is greatly appreciated!!!

I think you've got it!  The picture in my book looks nothing like what I found, but when I looked it up online, it seems to be a match!

Thank you!

I had those bird's nests take over one of my flower pots recently. Also those pinwheels look awesome.

Some really nice photos and finds in this thread. I really like the Xylaria polymorpha. I'm going to nominate that second photo.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.
