Unknown mushroom ID please
    #1396100 - 03/20/03 07:27 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Well I was walking along today (early autumn) and I see all these mushrooms apparently growing from a live healthy tree?
I'm no good at ID'ing trees but if you feel it's important then I can get pics of the tree, leaves etc.
Mushroom is smooth, tan, dry, pleasant mushroom smell. Gills are straight and chocolate brown, a cap is currently being printed.
It's possible that the mushrooms are actually growing from debris caught in a crevice in the tree, it was quite hard to tell. I'll look closer soon.
I hope this is enough. Thanks a bunch

Great pictures.

As far as the mushrooms are, I have no idea. I believe I have seen something similar myself, however never had the time to ID it. Im looking through my books now to see if I can find anything.

It appears to have a rusty brown sporeprint, as you can see on the veil.

Are you in Australia?

New Zealand actually
I had a closer look and they definitely appear to be growing form the trunk itself. And yes, rusty brown spore print.
Here's a shot of the leaves from the tree

Thanks for your help

Perhaps something like Agrocybe aegerita (= Pholiota aegerita = Agrocybe cylindracea ) ?

I believe I have identified it as  agrocybe parasitica
http://www.allaboutmushrooms.com/Bolbitaceae.htm

Any experienced mycologists care to confirm?

Yes, that?s it, good work!

I also read in one source that Agrocybe aegerita can be parasitical, is this true?

Agrocybe is a good guess but it's hard to ID it exactly to species.
NZ has a lot of endemic species.

For half a second it seemed like Hypholoma, but the spore colour is incorrect. Agrocybe Parisitica seems very likely. Get some spores for me

If anybody wants spores then I'd be glad to send you a print.
But please reassure me that this parasitic mushroom isn't going to devestate your country's forests!

You raise a good point. Dr. Burdsall has made a career of helping make sure somebody doesn't import a foreign mushroom species which might do exactly what you describe (among other things). When I last heard him speak it was on this exact topic. He has spent a lot of time inspecting wood imports (both here and abroad) to make sure foreign fungi weren't also imported.

Before you attempt to import spores for a species such as this you might want to contact him or the Forest Service and find out if you're potentially going to be causing a problem.

The issue here is different than if you were importing a Psilocybe print. If the Psilocybe spores get into the wild, they're a lot less likely to end up causing the sort of devastation that a parasitic fungus such as Agrocybe parasitica might.

I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember this, but, when I was young, Denver had a huge number of American elm trees along the streets. About 1969, the Dutch elm disease got here. There are no American elms here any more. All of them died, as far as I know.

The strict quarantine laws on imported lumber actually date to an earlier incident. For a similar reason, there are pretty much no American chestnuts anymore. They were wiped out by an imported chestnut blight disease by the 1930s.

So, please check before you import those spores. While they probably wouldn't do anything like Dutch elm disease did, I'm sure we wouldn't want to find out otherwise the hard way.

TIA

Happy mushrooming!

ToxicMan, do you know anything about Agrocybe aegerita being parasitical?

No, I don't. Agrocybe aegerita is cultivated in the US and is a native species. A little quick research seems to indicate that it's a saprobe on wood. David Arora indicates that it is sometimes found growing on live trees. That's not always indicative of parasitism - I find Pleurotus pulmonarius growing from dead areas of living trees sometimes.

I wanted to make a woodchips patch under a beech hedge in the garden, but after reading that it also grows on live trees I changed my mind....

Of course not.

In 5 seconds you could have searched the species name on google and found that out for yourself.

::sigh:: laziness... :frown:

Armillarea would be of more concern than Argocybes. But im sure species from New Zealand and Australia would thrive in your conifers.
