First new/unknown species of the year(PICS!!)
    #1527959 - 05/07/03 05:01 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

So the story continues...

After finding those first few and only weilii of the day we decided to check out the patch of new species I have been picking for two years now. Sure enough there were two mushrooms fruting, not much but but still fun to see for the first time of the year. The one was damn near rotten and pure blue, so I left him there. I did bring home the nice specimen for printing and photographing since I didn't have my camera with me(I didn't expect to find anything)

Here a few pics....

and a group shot of both weilii and the new unknown species.

Most certainly are, there is some bluing in these pics but the dark stems like to hide it. Yes they are active though, and specimens were sent to Guzman last year and the taxonomy of this species is getting sorted out. Its either a new Psilocybe species, or one of the two new species discovered 3 years ago by another GA hunter/picker/mycologist.

Really? Man, I hate this new image hosting site I'm using. I would use the shroomery upload but its too restricted to post what I want to post. Can anyone else see them? They are pulling up fine on my computer, maybe it was just temporary?

Nice pics LK.
Just for clarification, the first 5 pics in your link (the pan/cope looking ones) are the new un-i'd ones and the last 7 are the weilli? Well, plus the group shot at the end.
Keep em comin.

The first pics look like Panaeolus to me. Have you attempted any microscopic evaluation?

This is your image problem...

No, they are definiately Psilocybes, though I guess I can see how they have a similar shape to a Panaeolus, thats all though. I have hundreds of pics that are much better than these, this is just one specimen.

nice lk....its good to hear that the sir will-eyes are popping up again!

the unknown species is very intriguing.  are you finding these in the same area that you found the other weillis?  if not, what habitat are you finding them in?

No, this new species is found in a different habbitat, but in the fall of the year last year I did find a handful of weilii along side the new species every so often. This new species is found on a flood plain that stays very wet year round, the soil is very sandy and there are no trees, just tall weeds and grasses. They seem to have roughly the same season as weilii except I notice this new species fruiting a little longer in the winter and enduring a bit colder temps than weilii prefers.

Interesting!

The first specimen clearly looks like a Panaeolus papillonaceus...except for the fact that I DO see bluing on the stem....whats pretty amazing. These are the pictures I just have posted in my other thread which look so similar to yours!!

Have you taken a spore print of this mushroom yet? Whats the color? What was this growing from?

Here are some better pics of the new species from last year. They are an extremely hygrophanous species and fade quickly to a pale yellowy tan color similar to the color of many species in the Panaeolus complex, but when moist they are striated at the margin with the classic carmel chestnut Psilocybe color.

Lets see if I can get these pics to work this time using the shroomerys upload option...
