Real knowledge...

Swami: Real knowledge should have real applications.

Does anyone disagree with this? If so, why?

Note: In desperate need of a cure...

Let's see, 'should have.' It may have, probably has, but I don't know if it should have. Some things just are, I don't see why everything should have an application.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Swami: Real knowledge should have real applications.

I agree with the statement, but I think that the term 'real' is misguiding...It implies that existence is only what can be verified using human measurement. And as we all know, human measurement has always been flawed (because it is operated by humans). It kind of limits the possibility of there being knowledge of something that is not measurable, which I for one, DO think is a possibility.

I'm with Evolving on this one.

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

I agree, but only so far as Pythagoras would. (I've been in story mode lately, don't really know why) I've been told that one day Pythagoras was teaching his students about ellipses. Now back in ancient Greece there was absolutely no real application for the knowledge of elliptical patterns. Ellipses just don't exist on Earth, for whatever reason. So a student of his says, "What can we possibly gain by studying ellipses?". Pythagoras trurns to one of his slaves and says, "Give this man some coin, if he feels he must profit from mathematics."

See Pythagoras loved knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Lucky for us, because if he hadn't researched elipses we would have had to start from scratch when we figured out the planets have eliptical orbits.

I think that all knowledge has real appplications. It just might take a while for the applicaton to emerge. As such, 'pure theoretical' research is just as valid as 'applied' research, because they're really the same thing. Or so I think.

(the above was deciphered from phi (~1.62) using an advanced alphanumeric conversion algorhythm and should not be perceived as meaningful.)

Define real.

Define knowledge.

Define applications.

The answer will be found in the definitions.

Well that Pythogagoras character seemed to a develop a consistent system that paralleled something in external reality.  Whether that had any useable purpose at the time is irrelevant I think. It was just something that 'worked' and wasn't just merely a loose concept fluttering around in his head.

i think it's the difference between abstract and logical.  only one is acceptable in social reality, but the other is just as real... only harder to find applicable.

seems to me any rating system of knowledge is just an abstract idea based on the information the collective consciousness has at a particular time.

and all these strange colorful ideas in our head are possibly some sort of key to infinity.

weird, i think i was pondering this same subject yesterday whilst tripping balls.
mmmmmmushroooommmmmms.
