When the Americans find out what the 'fed has been doing they will be absolutely rip-shit.

Right.  That isn't all you advocate though is it?  Which is why I think you are a nutcase.  And just what good do you suppose a bunch of Congressional retards the likes of Barney Frank and Chris Dodd will do auditing the Fed is mysterious to me.  Did you know that Congress is part of the government?  Yep, it is.  Isn't one of your core recommendations that the government get out of the currency business?  Yep, it is.

That is utterly ridiculous and worthy of Pooktza.  It belongs in another forum.  I think we all know which one I mean.  The US was neutral regarding negotiations, not warfare.  What you have presented as evidence for that lunacy is no evidence at all.  Any non deranged person would interprret it that way.  It's also interesting that you never heard this stupid shit during the first Gulf War.  It wasn't until the second that the loonies came out of the bin with this crap.

Specifically, by requiring Plaintiffs to abide by the Act’s individual mandate, Congress is also compelling Plaintiffs to fully disclose past medical conditions, habits and behaviors. Not only will the insurer be privy to all past medical information, Congress’s individual mandate will, by necessity, allow the compelled insurer access to Plaintiffs’ present and future medical information of a confidential nature. If judicially enforceable privacy rights mean anything, then private and confidential medical details certainly merit Constitutional protection. Constitutional money worked just fine.  The problem we have today is that the Congress has failed in it's responsibility to coin money.  Now, paper money backed by a standardized weight of precious metal serves as a stable medium of exchange and thus serves the same function as the metal (in terms of it's stability as long as it's convertibility to said metal remains unchanged).

I am concerned about a Hyperinflationary Great Depression developing in the United States.  That would force the issue of people utilizing mediums of exchange that differ from the government fiat.

I view the Constitution as being a contract between the federal government and the respective people that live in each sovereign state.  When the money supply was taken over by a central bank bent on destroying the buying power of the money that is a clear breach of contract.

The United States government would not be able to accumulate massive debt, in the form of debt instruments and intragovernmental debt, and eventually wholesale debt monetization without money that is backed by nothing.

Without a viable means of increasing the money in order to fund spending that is flatly impossible to cover through overt taxation government could not spend money out of control.  Id est:  Would we be able to offer China or Japan debt instruments for sale in the form of silver & gold?  Not for very long because it would become painfully obvious very quickly that such obligations could never be covered.  Honestly think about that...  The difference between massive debt in the form of a sound medium of exchange versus fiat...  Funny money encourages the accumulation of debt because debtors gain (in the short run) by paying debts with less valuable money.  If the money gained in buying power over time this favors those who actually save.  Massive accumulation of government debt is not feasible (to the unreal extent that we see today with U.S. government) with sound money.

You do not bother to think about the fundamental differences involved with debt and mediums of exchange.

Again, we see that neocons who complain about government spending have no business doing so because they turn a blind eye to the monetary basis that enables government growth to Leviathan size.

In regards to government "changing the value of the medium of exchange when there was a gold standard" present evidence and we will debate this.  Gold hovering around 1100 U.S.D. is the beginning of a market rejection of the dollar.

Instead of making baseless claims we can examine the monetary situation in order to see why we have come to differing conclusions.

I have told you before that individuals work in diplomacy and intelligence simultaneously.  They carefully frame their discussions with foreign dignitaries in order to control their perceptions and thus manipulate their actions.  It is morally wrong to turn a blind eye to this.  Diplomacy should be used to prevent war and U.S. discussions with Saddam prior to the Iraq invasion of Kuwait could have done just that.  U.S. intelligence agencies have been acting recklessly for decades now, and you are obviously disingenuous if you deny that fact.

Regarding healthcare shenanigans, you neoconservatives do not bother to examine the school of Austrian economics in order to come up with the cogent arguments against the relentless expansion of government.

I already did, Al, in another thread.  And there is no debate.  It is historical fact.
Quote:
January 31, 1934
The day after the passage of the Act, President Roosevelt fixed the weight of the Dollar at 15.715 grains of Gold "nine-tenths fine". The Dollar was thereby devalued from $20.67 to one troy ounce of Gold to $35.00 to one troy ounce of Gold - or by 69.3 percent. The Treasury, which had become the possessors of all the nation's Gold on the previous day, saw the value of their Gold holdings increase by $US 2.81 Billion. The Treasury now "owned" the Gold, and no one else inside the U.S. was allowed to own any Gold except by the express permission of the Treasury.

The new ratio of $US 35 was adopted at Bretton Woods in July 1944. The U.S. Dollar was made the world's Reserve Currency and the IMF and World Bank established in 1947. The now international ratio of 35 U.S. Dollars to one troy ounce of Gold lasted until August 15, 1971.

The only thing that was hijacked was the money supply in 1913.

Breton Woods II completely broke down in 1971 zap.

That was your "attempt" at showing that government could set the price of precious metals in the face of massive inflation, right?

When we see gold at 5000 dollars an oz. hyperinflation will be right around the corner.

Explain how we could owe China trillions if the dollar was  still backed by metal.  The money supply was simply not large enough to have that kind of debt.

It is specifically inflation of the money supply that allows for that kind of debt to accumulate.

W.T.F. in God's Name does it mean that the money is backed by "full faith and credit of the U.S. government?

Government is godless.  Saying that it is backed by credit means specifically the ability of the government to accumulate debt
.

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUKN1752966920080917

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=av16pDNNrMig

Now, given that the dollar is based on the U.S. government's ability to accumulate debt (because the fiat currency is essentially fiduciary media and you can not contest this) when we see the U.S. gov't credit rating drop they will not be able to accumulate debt through debt instruments.

The last resort could be monetizing the debt.  It is either that or defaulting.

http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article18574.html

You say that you do not support growth of government?

Without fiat fiduciary media funny monopoly money the government would not be able to accumulate the massive debt that it has.

That is why your version of "fiscal conservatism" is empty and hollow.

If government were to attempt Universal Healthcare coverage through sound money, the fraud would be transparent because they would only be able to finance it through overt taxation.

I consider inflation caused by an unaccountable central bank to be taxation without representation.

You aren't really conservative so I wouldn't expect you to comprehend that.

What do you call 700 bases in 130 plus countries?  I don't know any other nation that does that.

Why does the government keep increasing the money paid out in entitlement programs? This is to keep up with inflation of the money supply.

The reason why healthcare is specifically expensive is because of government entitlement programs.  This acts as an artificial demand pushing prices up continuously.  Government made it expensive and now claims that it will fix it.

Government is able to spend massive amounts of money directed toward entitlement programs because of fiat money.

The government would have been forced to default on it's debt a long time ago if we continued to use sound money.

Either that or it would have needed to shrink to avoid default.

Socialist welfare programs, whether it is healthcare or otherwise, do not survive very long with sound money.  It can not be funded without massive overt taxation with sound money.

This is why the neocon argument for small government is hollow.

It's real simple zap.  Precious metals are in a limited quantity, actually more limited than what the market would make you think !

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10352527

This means that instead of attempting to sell debt instruments (denominated in fiat dollars) like T-bills to China the federal government would need to sell different debt instruments denominated in standardized precious metal weight.

It would very quickly become obvious to every party concerned (including the people) that the debt could not possibly be paid back!

In spite of the fact that my gold and silver would have unreal buying power after the dollar crisis I would prefer that people are not subjected to said dollar crisis only because I am not an asshole.

It would be preferable to shrink government (THINK PRESIDENT HARDING STYLE IN 1920) to avoid this.

My main point is that my arguments rationally support shrinking the government out of dire economic necessity.

My argument would win in a debate against government run healthcare.

Your argument has no balls because it does not go far enough in criticizing government's financial recklessness.

And you think that just because somebody finds a big gold strike somewhere it should be allowed to increase the money supply?
:flowstone:

And once again your arguments do not address the historically obvious fact that commodity based currency has NEVER prevented governments from borrowing money or overspending.  They are not related.

Al, I appreciate your desire to shrink government spending.  What I do not appreciate is your belief in the magic gold solution.  It won't make a goddam bit of difference.  You cut spending by, wait for it, cutting spending.  The form of currency doesn't have a fucking thing to do with it.  They can spend and borrow with commodity based currency just as easily as the spend and borrow without it.

Why gold, anyway?  There is nothing intrinsically special about it.  It is shiny, conductive, malleable and noncorrosive.  The only feature of any import to it's use as a medium of exchange is it's noncorrosive nature.

The difference between precious metals and paper, in terms of inflating a money supply, is that technological innovation increases production output far faster than inflation of the money supply with an economy using precious metal based mediums of exchange.

You are missing an extremely key point regarding fiat money versus commodity based mediums of exchange and or metal/paper backed with metal:

Inflation of the money supply allows a debtor (in this case the U.S. government) to pay it's debt obligations with money that has less buying power.

Essentially those that save money lose out and accumulation of unsustainable debt is rewarded.

The United States would not be able to amass huge debt to other sovereign nations and central banks if the money was actually backed with valuable commodities.

The reason being is that it would soon become obvious that there exists (on this planet at least) not enough of the valuable commodity in question to cover the debt being serviced!  When government incurs debt in money that loses buying power it encourages the accumulation of more debt.  Sound money increases in buying power (given an increase in actual production of goods and services), this makes it much more difficult for government to amass a great deal of debt because it is not advantageous to do so!

Sound money rewards the accumulation of capital.  Inflationary fiat rewards the accumulation of crippling debt.  This is not hard to understand zap.

Inflationary funny money encourages the unsustainable accumulation of public and private debt!   This is because in the short run incurring such debt is viewed as being useful to the debtor!

In most economies examined we have found that (price) deflation correlates with an increase in prosperity.

Go back to the Industrial Revolution where we saw prices falling across the economy (due to increased productivity caused by technological innovation) where we saw a dramatic increase in real wages...

Now examine the recent housing boom/bust, that was based on an increase in fiduciary media flowing through the economy because of artificially low interest rates...

The first example brought real and lasting prosperity.

The second caused systemic economic distortions that rocked the U.S. economy.

You would do well to actually examine history zap.  History proves that sound money works and inflationary money destroys nations and empires alike.  Stop acting like an ostrich.

Regarding the present Healthcare Debate:

The reason why the neoconservatives in the Republican party have failed at preventing the bogus healthcare "reform" from passing is that they were not able to put together an honest and unified Constitutional argument against it.

Neoconservatives do not take the Constitution seriously.

If you are to use Constitutional arguments against the growth of big government you have to follow the Constitution as a whole.

Cherry picking the parts of the Constitution that you like does not make for a strong argument.

As far as luvdem is concerned:  This is exactly the kind of economic sense that Palin does not talk about.  She would not be a great help during a dollar crisis.

"Have you ever seen what happens when a grenade goes off in a school? Do you really know what you’re doing when you order shock and awe? Are you prepared to kneel beside a dying soldier and tell him why he went to Iraq, or why he went to any war?"
"The things that are done in the name of the shareholder are, to me, as terrifying as the things that are done—dare I say it—in the name of God. Montesquieu said, "There have never been so many civil wars as in the Kingdom of God." And I begin to feel that’s true. The shareholder is the excuse for everything."
