this thread is looking a bit long so sorry if someone has already posted a supplier for spawn bags but i feel this site is pretty reasonable- 45p per bag including postage! a huge saving compared to ordering off a site in the states where I would have had to order hundreds just to warrent the high cost of delivery

pre sterilised petri dishes and agar mediums also reasonably priced

the filter patches are good for jars too I cut them into 4 and fix them over a hole in the lid with micropore tape, was thinking of sealing with silicone but so far no need. No contams as yet (PF tek) will start some grain when they are done

(dont fill a bag of grain and inject it with spores straight up it takes too long to colonise and will likely get contaminated best used for G2G transfers)

Hey guys,

I want to thank everyone who's contributed to this thread-I had no idea so many people had so many funky little mycology tips on this little isle of ours. :wink:

I've updated the original post with a list of most (not all) of everyone's tips-particularly those of you who were kind enough to post links. As SSV pointed out, this thread is a tad long now, so hopefully if you all keep updating us with bargains you find, I'll keep the front page updated and the poor noobs don't have to sift through 10+ pages of our ramblings. :lol:

I was just wondering what you guys use for liquid-culture lids.
Oh and grain jar lids.
Micropore tape and RTV silicon?

Also has anyone tried Quart or litre jars in a Prestige 6l High Dome Pressure cooker?
I saw those large coffee jars, but the lids look kinda crappy.

I just use micropore over the lid hole.  Try not to get it wet when you agitate though.  Further discussion should be in mush cult.

Yes, the "Deluxe glass Preserving Jars 1000g" from Barnitts can just barely fit 2 inside those PCs, though you have to stand up one and lay the second one on top of it horizontally.  They're small PCs but they get the job done.

I found this pressure cooker on ebay. It's11L as far as capacity is concerned and is rather cheap too.

Hve you bought this????  I emailed the guy he said they are made by KitchenKing in India but he hasnt told me the PSI yet any ideas any one??  :shoosh:

Yes I bought one.

I can fit 4 big jars in at a time.

There was a little bit of a risk when purchasing one with no pressure gauge. However, it works perfectly.

I just need to keep an eye on it every now and again. I usually do a water drop test to see if it has reached a reasonable temperature.

Basically, I wet my hands and let a drip from them hit the lid of the cooker. If it boils instantly (say, 1-3 secs) I try to maintain this for 60-90 minutes.

I've had no contaminates.

Does it not tell you the pressure it runs at in the instructions?? Or does it come with no info?

4 big jars being quart size? or litre size say? could you take a pic please id be intrested in seeing it thanks :smile:  :billymaythumbup:

Hello Emptyvessal.

It can hold 4 Quart Jars.

Also, as far as instructions were concerned, they were very badly written(terrible English) with no mention of psi.

I'm gonna be investing in an AA PC as soon as possible but I recommend the 11L from ebay for anyone looking for a cheap fix.

I'm afraid I can not post any pics just now as I am away from home. I'll see if the instructions are kicking about when I get back though. I'll maybe put a scan up. They're worth a laugh.

I would never buy that thing.  Given how dangerous a faulty PC could be (think fatal) and the fact that we don't know what PSI it can reach, I'd say picking up the ~£30 Prestiges from Argos (see earlier in the thread) is a much safer bet.  They're small but they do 15 PSI and you can trust them.

Yeah, I already have one of the prestige ones. I got it last year. I have to work it in pretty much the same manner as the 11L from ebay as neither have a pressure gauge.

I did however know the risks I was taking by getting one that wasn't branded. Luckily this time, I got one that isn't faulty though.

It honestly works like a dream. I was sceptical at first but I am glad that it worked out. I have used it a lot in the past few months with no troubles.

It probably wont last me years like a top range model but it works well for now. As long as you are careful and inspect your equipment thoroughly for signs of damage/wear, there shouldn't be any problem.

Just because it was made in a country that doesn't speak English doesn't mean it is any worse or better than any other PC around.

I had a look on the kitchen king website there stuff looks good to me they prob dont have a big English speaking market as they are based in india so they haven't put the effort into getting the instructions correct etc  Indian food is famous all over the world so why cant they make a PC hmmmmmm?

If it was made in Australia would people mistrust it then???

I agree. What I got works great.

On another note, it may be worthwhile checking local Asian food stores for cheap PC's.

I was in a local Indian food store and they were selling a 15L PC for £35.00. I asked if they could get bigger ones in store but that's as big as they go unfortunately.

If anyone is able to find somewhere that does them bigger, please let me know.

I have a glass autoclavable syringe (10ml) with a metal leur lock that I can spare I would like to aquire a print with it if anyones interested. I know there is a market place for this but rather than making another 40 posts just for the sake of getting in i thought id try here as it is frequented by uk members. pm me if your interested

If you're looking for plastic BRF jars, look no further than Poundland.

I got 10 for a quid, and they're all coming up nicely :smile:

Our shop isn't that big, but they had a variety of sizes and shapes. They've also got quite a few larger plastic trays, you can get a couple of those for a quid too.

I also found the tougher 'plastic specimen containers' you linked to http://www.scuddlebutt3.co.uk/LaboratorySupplies.htm for. I got a pack of 10 of those, delivered for under a fiver from eBay.

Also, I have bought BRF from holosfoods, there lower delivery knocks £2 off per bag the the link in OP :smile:

If you're serious about BRF, you can get 25kg of the stuff from here delivered for £38.
