Distilled water is often used in humidifiers and for ironing clothes. You can't by it with other bottled water?
Not like you need it anyway, tapwater is fine.

Good thought badman. A search of their site turns up only 'de-ionized' water, which I know isn't the same -- but is it equally good? If I boil it to sterilize?
Thanks Doc_T, but things that are common in the US can be frustratingly difficult to find here (as you've probably noticed!). It looks like I can order distilled online, but it just seems goofy to have a courier bring me a gallon of water at work (which I then have to carry home on my motorcycle).
Some of the stores have distilled water for ironing, to which they've then added fragrances and other nonsense.

Understood/agreed.

And none of them or can get plain? Seems odd. Try a medical supply house. Not a local pharmacy, but a place that sells wheelchairs and powered beds.
Though again, there's absolutely no need for distilled water.

Humidifiers? In the UK? Hahaha. Ha.
Homebase has a nice selection of de-humidifiers though .
If you want a humidifier around here the best bet seems to be ordering from Amazon etc.

Somebody there uses humidity. For something. Go find it.
Or distill your own, if you really feel a need to have it. It's not 'sterile', BTW.

Of course, I was just being a smarty pants
It seems to be true that humidifiers aren't a common item here though.

Sure, that's true here as well. Florida is already humid, for example. Are you using this water for spore syringes? How much do you need?

(Indeed -- "for something" -- I'm pretty sure that adding a humidifier to my 'wish list' on was part of what caused Amazon to start recommending Paul Stamets books to me )
I'd like to start using something purer than Brita-filtered water for syringes (I make a fair few of those) and to dilute IPA which as you've noted probably wouldn't require distilled.

Be a lot simpler to get a PC and use agar or LC instead of spores. One purchase would provide unlimited ability to propagate mycelium.
As for IPA, methylated spirits is exact replacement, no need to mess around with dilution

Indeed, all of the above my good sir . I keep busy. My girlfriend has started calling me a 'mad scientist'. I'm cooking agar as we speak
[ EDIT: In fact, FastFred's PDA recipe calls for distilled H2O. Ding ding! ]

You definately dont need distilled water for agar, I mainly use it for spore syringes that i send to other people, storing mycelium and wedges of agar in eppendorf tubes, scratch syringes, sterile washes and diluting IPA. For everything else i use tap.

You simply cannot buy meths that has not had the purple dye added in the UK or Ireland making it useless for any cleaning/extraction purpose.

It's perfectly suitable for surface decontamination, just like isopropyl. You may not want to use it for extractions.
