Presenting-A guide to grow supplies sources in the UK-**UPDATED 22nd October 2010** * 8
    #11530842 - 11/26/09 07:53 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Hey all (and especially fellow budding UK mycologists!)

I've been using this awesome site for a month now, since first ordering a complete mycobag kit, studying up to start my own proper grows. As a source of information, this site is invaluable (and pretty damned vibrant entertainment at times too! :vaped:

But one thing-as all the sponsors seem to be American based, and transatlantic shipping is a tad unfeasable, I spent many an hour pondering online trying to find decent supplies,so,to hopefully spare a few of you a few frustrating hours browsing, here's my list of supplies that I bought.

(Note:I'm by no means claiming these are the best or the cheapest available-just that I've had the most success with them, they meet my (moderately stringent) quality standards and they don't break the bank)

Firstly, the key item, the pressure cooker. An essential piece of kit-while boiling and steam sterilisation may suffice, nothing beats a good PCing for sterility. This 7L model from Argos is a fair size and quite cheap at £30.

Next, your jars. I spent a long time trying to find the ideal jar, then stumbled across these Ikea offerings quite by accident.Varying sizes and volumes, most are straight sided, entirely glass except for a transparent plastic circle on top-perfect,if you ask me.

For substrate,my preferred choice is organic rye grain. Cheap, cheerful and the myc seems to love it.I particularly like the rye from this site for it's cleanliness-I've twice had unsterilized rye jars colonise perfectly from this source (not that I'd ever recommend trying unless you want to almost certainly waste spores, but it just goes to show...)

I found needles and syringes a bit of a headache-I had no idea where to go and ask for needles without looking like a smack addict, but in the end found this site selling bulk sterile packed syringes with needles.

The local Homebase proved great for casing and growing supplies packing WBS,straw and all manner of goodies! However,I just availed myself of the vermiculite and perlite on offer.

Lastly, good old eBay proved reliable as ever for incredibly cheap coco coir and gypsum supplies-those I trust you guys can find for yourself!

Hopefully, this can help along some of my island-bound brother mycologists and spread the :mushroom2:

if anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me-about time I started giving back!

Good vibes,all!

For spores,I can't recommend the Free Spore Ring Europe enough-these guys are just incredible, and deserve all the support we can give them.

Yup, that's pretty much where I got all my stuff

For jars, the best I've found are at Barnitts. Grab the 230g jars for PF Tek.

If you're in the market for a dehydrator, I recently picked up a Stockli. Swiss-made, works very well

Also, whenever I see one of these UK threads, it gets me thinking about a shroom community site focused on UK growers.

General growing info obviously isn't country-specific, but info on supplies, where to pick wild shrooms, etc. certainly is. A UK site could also help local growers meet up, share experiences, exchange prints, etc. As far as I'm aware, no such site currently exists.

Not sure how much demand there would be for such a thing. Any thoughts? If people are into it, I could look into setting something up.

To be honest,I'm more than happy with the Shroomery.
Here, you have the input and experience of literally a planetwide network of shroomers.
Once you start segmenting, people will drift into their local sections, and the knowledge base is fragmented.
As long as the vast majority of non UKers don't mind an occasional thread like this,I'm more than happy to read (with sickening jealousy!) of other's easier grow stories.

My 2c.

Yea, I like how international this community is.  I wish there wasn't such a language barrier to the east, otherwise I think this would be a much more international community.  Even still though, we do get a number of non english speakers doing their best to communicate, which is why I think this site is so amazing, it's really the most global community for mushroom cultivation that exists.  It would be nice to have regional forums perhaps, within this forum, so as to keep the info all in one place, but still provide area specific information.  That is something that I think those in charge should consider, at least for the hunting forums.

Nice information, I'm sure those that need it will find it quite useful.  Thanks!

The Shroomery is certainly a fantastic resource. And as I noted, the knowledge of how to grow doesn't really have anything to do with where you live. But it's obviously a US-centric site, which is an issue when it comes to things like obtaining supplies.

There have been several of these UK grower threads, but they seem to get lost, nothing really gets consolidated. Everything you posted has been covered elsewhere. Did you search for UK threads? Were you able to find them?

I personally also really like the idea of a local site which helps local growers get together. I would love to meet up with people and share experiences. Yes, I could post a meetup thread here, but a dedicated UK site might be more effective. (There are obviously other places to post such info, such as a Facebook group, etc. Doesn't necessarily need its own site.)

I also have issues with the way the information on this site is organised, which is pretty shittily tbh. Yes, there are centralised resources, but a lot of the good info is in the forums, which can be a bitch to navigate. Locating the good info is a bit too serendipitous imo

I dunno, I have an interest in a site which offers something the Shroomery doesn't, whether it's specialised local info, a more organised resource, whatever. The Shroomery's great, but it's not perfect, Plenty of room for other shroomy stuff

The idea of mushroom growers getting together in person is not the best idea, in my opinion.  That has "FBI INFILTRATRION" written all over it.  Or whatever the uk equivalent of the fbi is.  I agree with your main points though, could be better organized, and could certainly be less u.s. centric.  I wouldn't blame you for pursuing the creation of a new site. I'd be very interested to see it occur.

Heh, you make a good point about the meetups. Would need to come up with some creative ways to screen out the operatives

Glad you agree with the other points. A better organised site with more of a focus on local growers… Will give it some thought and see if I can be bothered to try anything

The fuzz? :chiefwiggum:
Hardly an equivalent.

Though,as cool as it would be,an advertised mass gathering of shroomers may not be well advised. :frown:

@Darjeeling
I did search the forums and had moderate success over the weeks...but I'm an information junkie and it's what I do.I never found any single list like this to be used as a one stop reference if you didn't fancy the research time,hence...

Area specific forums on the Shroomery could be fun, especially on the hunting section,as Libertaire suggested.

I'll stick this thread for a week or so until our friends in the UK have a chance to bookmark it.

Don't forget our EU vendors too, such as MRCA in Austria.

As for this site being US centered, that's just the nature of the beast.  For example, on my own website, I've had hits from 146 countries in the last 30 days, but 94% of total hits have have come from the U.S.  It's not a grand conspiracy or anything, just the fact that there's more people online in the U.S. than in other countries, but that's changing.  Hopefully, we can attract more EU vendors to enter the business (this is a wide-open opportunity for aspiring myco-entrepreneurs in Europe) and join our site.

Azarius is also Europe based.

I have used both and can recommend them for speedy delivery and good customer service.

A good way to get jars for PF cakes if you like jam are Bonne Mamman brand jars. I have seen them in the U.K. often enough when I go to visit the family and they work great.

I still remember the first time I grew, going to the supermarket and buying 20 pots of jam. The woman at the checkout looked at me as if I was crazy.

I am in Ireland and get spores from sporeworks with no trouble at all. Very quick delivery and certainly feasible.

I would not get the tower PC in argos. I have used towers in the past and they are not great, that one only goes to 12psi too. I did some searching before I got mine, the newer "smart" prestige range are meant to be crap. I have this prestige and would highly recommend it, seals nicely and I have no trouble at all.

Hmm. Blackout, you could be right about the PC.I just got the largest capacity one I could find for a reasonable price, but it's hardly ideal, especially if it only does 12psi...Luckily,I've never had a contam issue due to poor PCing-I can take full clumsy credit for the infections into my jars!
But for £30,you can't go wrong.Especially as once you take a small step up the PC quality scale, you're instantly past the hundred pound mark...

edit:I just noticed that one you linked to is only 6L,but "high dome"-how'd you find it for getting jars in there?Even with the size on mine,it's a bit of a squeeze trying to get larger jars in...

They're on the large size for PF Tek. You're better off with the Barnitts ones I linked above.

Bonne Maman jam is good though
