Do you mean the Barnitts jars are a bit small?

The problem with the BM jars is that they're too large. IME, colonisation times are pretty awful vs the smaller Barnitts ones.

For a UK grower, I would say the Barnitts jars are perfect for PF Tek.

I just noticed that one you linked to is only 6L,but "high dome"-how'd you find it for getting jars in there?Even with the size on mine,it's a bit of a squeeze trying to get larger jars in...

that is the pc i use.the "high dome" feature enables you to fit taller jars.

i use 200g instant coffee granule jars,such as these.>

if you have a local NETTO'S the, cafe amora, medium roast have pc'able plastic lids.
the maxwell house 'classic roast' with brown lids, also work.

four of these fit in the "high dome',each hold 380g,so just over 1.5k of cooked grain per pc run.

edit> out of interest.what weight (of grain) can you fit in the 7L

I too have used similar sources to you but I had my perlite and verm delivered as needed garden supplies so got like 50litres of both!

For BRF and grain got from some health store olnine may be same as yours and have to say i soaked the grain but had no scum or dust or anything many others say they get after soaking!!??

As for Jars i use micro-science same people that make mycofarm bags and its over priced on certain items but you can get very tough plastic jars and also cheaper ones (£1 each) that have built in filters!

I too got the PC from Argos and seems fine at the moment, doesnt hold much but for small use its fine.

For spores i just use different spore syringe places from the UK, have used freespores but not guaranteed from contams as its what other people have done in their homes. They are good none the less.

For shrooms growing in wild I have no clue but think only type in UK is the liberty cap and pretty sure these are very hard to grow inside or at home.

Good thread have always wanted one like this.

Micro-science has some good products but IMO is expensive.

Any one know where i can get more glass culture vials for slants, ebay does not have them anymore. Any ideas would be sweet.

10ml ink refill syringes on eBay UK.
Search for "syringe long needle".
£4.50 for 6 with free P&P

The blunt needles are about 4" long with a large bore.

I like these because I can suck up lumpy mycelium from the very bottom of an LC jar and inoculate deep into a large PF.

I've recycled and pressure cooked some of these several times with no damage.

I haven't actually measured the total capacty, but I think you've got me beat.My last job was two jars with 500g dry grain each, and that was a bit of a squeeze.Granted they were oversized jars, but I think space wise you've definately got the advantage.
Damn! :tongue2:

Some pet shops sell perfectly sized, clean beech chip bedding for reptiles. This stuff works nicely with Ps.Cyans. but so does the nastiest dirty mixed wood chips from my local tree surgeon for 1/1000th the price.

I'm looking for a dehydrator but can't find one for less than £80, i've tried ebay & amazon, i've seen that you can pick them up in the U.S for as little as $30, no such luck in the U.K tho, any ideas anyone?

Can't understand why dehydrators are so expensive.
From what I've seen it's just a warm air flow through some trays. A bit like a gentle hair dryer.
I find just propping up a little cardboard box behind my PC with the warm air from the PSU directed through it works perfectly.

I just put em on my radiators full blast over night, sometimes a bit longer and then in the dry box with calcium chloride.

I had 3lbs 2oz of my first flush, I wasn't prepared for drying that many & i can't really leave any around the house drying because theres always someone about the place. I've got a large wooden box i can use, i'm gonna strap a box fan, one thats gives of heat, to the lid. That should work just as well as a dehydrator shouldn't it? I'll keep the lid open slightly. Then finish of with calcium chloride.

You're telling me...! I've been trying to get about 8 different jars to colonise, but it's like :banghead: every time. I think the myc's huddling together for warmth. :tongue2:

My average temperature in the house is 15'C (60'F for all the yanks ), which is enough to inhibit my growth, let alone the myc! So unless I fork out again for an incubator setup, like all us Brits, I'm basically :screwed:!

Goddamn it! Earth were warmer back in my day! Beer were a penny a pint, you got an eigth of bud for the price of a packet of monster munch, kids had more respect, mumble, grumble... :oldman:

The tree surgeon mentioned earlier sold me 3 cubic meters (3000 litres) for £30. I had to borrow a tipper truck from work to get it home!
I thought the B&Q chips were a bit too chunky averaging 25x25x10mm. They were 50 litre bags but I suppose my branch might have sold a different brand to yours.

You might want to make an incubator for the spawn if your house is too cold. All you need is a big polystyrene box like the ones supermarkets throw away and a little reptile heater mat on one of the walls. You should include a thermostat to prevent overheating. Boot sales and junk shops are great for this kind of thing on a limited budget! Once it's warmed up it'll only draw 5-10 watts.
Once your spawn jars or bags are ready, just mix it in your outdoor bed no matter what the weather and keep repeating.
I'm sure the more spawn you put in now, the quicker the colonization will be come springtime and the bigger the crop beginning winter next year.

I can't wait till my first outdoor flush! 11 months and counting!
