I just noticed that one you linked to is only 6L,but "high dome"-how'd you find it for getting jars in there?Even with the size on mine,it's a bit of a squeeze trying to get larger jars in...

that is the pc i use.the "high dome" feature enables you to fit taller jars.

i use 200g instant coffee granule jars,such as these.>

if you have a local NETTO'S the, cafe amora, medium roast have pc'able plastic lids.
the maxwell house 'classic roast' with brown lids, also work.

four of these fit in the "high dome',each hold 380g,so just over 1.5k of cooked grain per pc run.

edit> out of interest.what weight (of grain) can you fit in the 7L

does away with the need for perlite, which may be hard to find and expensive for some in the uk.produce ~2oz dry per bucket

could probably fit another couple of "floors" if i needed more drying room.

cheapest dehydrator i could find on e-bay was £40 inc p+p.
save the money and buy a pc instead:smile:

So what type to go for and where to buy in the UK for a reasonable price.

for adding to grain prior to pc'ing i like to use gypsum bought from the home brew shop.ask for calcium sulphate.
admittedly, it's relatively expensive at ~ 79p per 100g.
my local shop used to sell it by the kilo for £1  but realized their was some cock-up in their pricing ,but, it does go a long way.

i keep mine in an old pepper pot, and sprinkle over the grain just before jarring.

for bulk, i now knock up some plaster, allow to dry and save.
grind as and when needed.
i may revert back to the "hombrew" gypsum, as the amount i grow,i only require ~ 15 g per batch.and is much easier to use.

... I keep losing money on hygrometers.....

if you still have these hygrometers,do as the site linked to in the OP suggests:

"Simply wrap the hygrometer in a wet towel for 2 minutes, then check the reading which should be 100%"  link

if the ones you have are not adjustable,do the above and allow for any inaccuracy.
ie.if,after the "wet towel" treatment, you get a reading of 90% you can assume that the actual RH is nearer 100%.

that gypsum is really expensive it will work but youll use it up in days.

i use similar from my local home brew shop for adding to my grain.
fill an old pepper shaker with the gypsum and sprinkle the grain as you're drying them (in a baking tray) prior to jarring up and PC'ing.
lasts a long time.

if you're doing large bulk grows it would become a little expensive...
one 100g tub of gypsum would be enough to make upto twelve of my 'bucket mono's'... in which case, knock up some plaster, dry and crush.
helps if you break it up a little before it sets fully.

UK co-op buying?

Anyone else want to go in on some Petri dishes with badman and I? Neither of us have room for 250 each :tongue2:

Hes found 500 triple vent 90 mm Petri dishes for 36£ . I got 15-20 quid in on it. Thats an epic deal. About 7p per dish. Thats less than half  price of 50mm ones in small multipacks.

Edit: I thought they were glass. Oops.

you are aware that tripple vent are not the same as tripple compartment?

the "vented" dishes have small ridges on the inside of the lid part to,i asume, allow for ventilation  not ideal for our purpose.
maybe an old hand will chime in and give some intel on these type of dishes.found very little in the search.

and while i'm at it.avoid any E-bay company that offer petri's in packs of 50.
they simply open a sleeve of 20 and repackage in bubblewrap and judging from the results i had, it's done in the fukin toilet!

Hey anyone know what the cheapest way to get parafilm is? Or cheap alternatives? I think I need some for my petri dishes. Can I manage with out it?

Use micropore tape, you can get rolls of it from Boots.

Cheapest alternative iv'e read of is to cut a roll of 'cling film' into 2" sections.Soon find out i just tried it.It's very easy to use.

If you place your top jar at that angle the lid should just slip on and off without having to fight it. Took me a few practice runs, that top jar is CLOSE to the top of the cooker.

Quote:

Man.. I was fiddly-fucking around trying to get the lid in for 20 minutes this morning. Right when I was about to give up I finally got it. That was a serious pain in the ass.

is the difficulty due to inexperience with this type of pc, or do the jars have to be positioned precisely for the lid to go on?

If it's the latter, i'd be extremly weary of putting that last jar on top.
i have visions of inadvertantly knocking the pc while trying to get the lid off that the top jar 'jiggles' into a position where it becomes impossible to get the lid off. Now that, would be a serious PITA
