Darwin theory debunked

Scientists today announced the discovery of the oldest fossil skeleton of a human ancestor. The find reveals that our forebears underwent a previously unknown stage of evolution more than a million years before Lucy, the iconic early human ancestor specimen that walked the Earth 3.2 million years ago.

The centerpiece of a treasure trove of new fossils, the skeleton—assigned to a species called Ardipithecus ramidus—belonged to a small-brained, 110-pound (50-kilogram) female nicknamed "Ardi." (See pictures of Ardipithecus ramidus.)

The fossil puts to rest the notion, popular since Darwin's time, that a chimpanzee-like missing link—resembling something between humans and today's apes—would eventually be found at the root of the human family tree. Indeed, the new evidence suggests that the study of chimpanzee anatomy and behavior—long used to infer the nature of the earliest human ancestors—is largely irrelevant to understanding our beginnings.

Ardi instead shows an unexpected mix of advanced characteristics and of primitive traits seen in much older apes that were unlike chimps or gorillas (interactive: Ardi's key features). As such, the skeleton offers a window on what the last common ancestor of humans and living apes might have been like.

Announced at joint press conferences in Washington, D.C., and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the analysis of the Ardipithecus ramidus bones will be published in a collection of papers tomorrow in a special edition of the journal Science, along with an avalanche of supporting materials published online.

"This find is far more important than Lucy," said Alan Walker, a paleontologist from Pennsylvania State University who was not part of the research. "It shows that the last common ancestor with chimps didn't look like a chimp, or a human, or some funny thing in between." (Related: "Oldest Homo Sapiens Fossils Found, Experts Say" [June 11, 2003].

With this latest "discovery" of Ardi last week mankind has gotten a few million years older.  how is this possible?


If science keeps debunking itself why are there so many skeptics who need empirical evidence to comfort their perceptions?

science does create absolute truth they are called "laws" this fossil find isn't a law, but it a point on perception none the least.


A few hundred years ago we thought light radiated from our eyes, it was the final truth.  later after tapping his eye socket with an Ice pick another scientist debunked that truth.

It just reflects what has long been thought; that chimpanzees and humans have a common ancestor.
Not that humans came from chimpanzees, a common misunderstanding, but that chimpanzees and humans shared a similar ancestor.

We've just taken it a step closer to what that common ancestor might look like physiologically.

Ummm our estimations were wrong?

Plus some paleoanthropologists have been saying for years a more orangutan-like tree-dweller was closer to our real ape-like ancestor.

How does underestimating the age of a species "debunk" Darwin's theories of evolution, natural selection, and punctuated equilibrium?

whats the difference? One gives a name for the unknown, and the other just assumes it knows?

Thats a great way to put it.  Science isnt, and never claims to be absolute truth.  But it is certainly converging on something, and this recent work is another step in that direction.

It isn't possible. The human lineage has always been as old as it is, with the specific course of progress that it has taken.

Why did you put the word discovery in apostrophes?
Do you not feel that becoming aware of delicately fossilized remains of what could likely be a part of that human lineage from millions of years ago doesn't constitute "gaining knowledge or seeing something previously unknown or unseen"?

What are you talking about, exactly? Are you sure you are well-enough aware of what the meaning the word "debunk" conveys?
It really isn't clear what you're talking about here, because "debunk" means to expose a claim or an assertion as being false.
What claim or assertion did science make that was then debunked, and how does this discovery fit into that picture?

Not quite sure what you're after with this question, but if we were to take the generalized question and fit it specifically within the context of this discovery, then I'd have to assume that skeptics would need empirical evidence of human remains existing for a specific amount of time before they could be comfortable in thinking that it is very likely that human remains had actually existed on this planet for that much time.

Other than that, you'll have to fill me in on what unspoken topic from your own mind you're jousting at before being more able to analyze it. :wink:
