Was Hitler's life "meaningful"? The "problem" of evil.
    #10951253 -

So I'm taking this class this semester entitled "The Meaning of Life". Anyways we were talking about the whole objective vs. subjective argument for there to be "meaning" in ones life... a reason to live per se. By subjective I mean if I person deems their own life to be meaningful, that is enough. And by objective I mean that there is some form of God which imbues our lives with meaning.

When we got to the subject of Hitler most of the class could agree Hitler had a a profound subjective meaning in his life. He thought what he was doing was moral and good for the world.

Unlike most people, I would argue Hitler also lived an objectively meaningful life. By this I mean the world benefited from Hitler. If you look at human existence as a learning experience, didn't Hitler and the holocaust teach us some of the greatest lessons of history? He taught us love, tolerance, compassion. By showing us the horrors of genocide it seared the lesson into the mass collective psyche. Who is the say if it wasn't for Hitler there would have been an even worse genocide in contemporary times?

My personal beliefs are that every person has an immortal soul, that we are all ultimately fractured parts of a greater whole (God if you will) and this whole has decided to experience both "good" and "evil" too allow for the fastest rate of collective evolution. If you look at it from this point of view, Does this solve the problem of evil?

Is all evil simply a catalyst for evolution? If we get a lesson out of it, does it serve a purpose?

I'd like to hear peoples thoughts on this subject.

I agree on Hitler living a very meaningful life in relation to society.  However, we can only speculate what would have happened had he not lived.

The actual act of creation is the same thing as that of destruction; the difference made between them is dependent on the after effect.  Hitler's life amounted to much creation/destruction and his place in the consensus reality is profound.

"Is all evil simply a catalyst for evolution"
Good/evil are just perceived constructs of change, just as evolution/retrogression are also just perceived constructs of change.  These constructs differ greatly in intensity at a surface level but, as long as chaos reigns, even the slightest change, of which may go completely unnoticed, may have a profound impact.

Hitler and the holocaust were an expression of the shadow side of humanity's collective consciousness, which can be temporarily repressed but will always return at various points in our history.  I do not believe evil was expressly allowed to exist in order to provide a lesson, but it is certainly possible to learn from evil's existence in an attempt to eliminate it in the future.
