Consciousness and parallel processing.
    #10267385 -

I doubt that computers ever will attain consciousness by serial processing, as my own consciousness comprises simultaneous awareness of several parallel processes in my brain.

Perhaps a computer will attain consciousness by parallel processing, but how can the computer become aware of parallel processes simultaneously?

The only known phenomena that would allow for simultaneous awareness, seems to be quantum entanglement.

imagine this: each neuron is a processor... there are over 100,000,000,000 neurons in the brain.

At the moment our home computers have, for example, 4 processors (quad core). It will take a little while until there are enough cores to support the amount of simultaneous calculation required to manifest consciousness.

Supercomputers have much more than 4 processors, and it is possible to design a software that processes on multiple computers on the internet.

The entire internet might gain consciousness, if it becomes aware of all the parallel processes simultaneously.

yeah.. if all the computers were synchronised. But it would be cheaper to just make it one computer.

Anyway, supercomputers do have more than 4 processors. 100,000,000,000? not so sure

Perhaps, but according to Ray Kurzweil they might attain that not so long into the future.

I think the idea that a computer can "equal" human consciousness is fundamentally absurd, at least with present definitions of "computer." They're so structurally different from our brains that there's just no way they'll end up having the same behavior.

BTW in addition to being massively parallel, our brains are also heavily recursive in terms of pathway structure. Personally I'm convinced that recursivity is crucial to real intelligence, and that's why no matter what their clock speed is, computers just can't begin to emulate real intelligence  yet. We need to rethink the structure of computers if we want intelligent behavior out of them.

Excellent, someone else on here has heard of Kurzweil.  Good stuff.

I've bought a couple of his books, haven't gotten around to reading them. Got into him through a band, actually. His theories are certainly interesting, and he seems to have a nack for predicting things accurately, so we'll see if he continues to be right.

All this is fine and dandy if you assume that the physical brain is the main factor behind consciousness.

Do you feel that there are forces which create consciousness which aren't physical/biological? If so, then what?

Not only do i "feel" .. i can rationalize it as well.

Mind is made out of matter, matter is made out of mind. Two words for the same thing imo. e=mc². Mind/matter is probably electricity, or some finer form.
