A Healing Experiment
    #939660 - 10/07/02 01:20 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Really want to advance spiritually? Try this thought experiment and post either why you could not do it or what you felt after you did it. Here goes:

Sit in a chair in a dark, quiet area. Do some deep, slow breathing and attempt to quiet your mind of daily trivia. Once settled, picture the person that you most hate in the entire world sitting directly across from you. Someone that has deeply wronged you. Someone that you wish was never born. That person who you would like to see die a horrible, painful death. No denial here. Don't pretend that you are too nice for these types of primal thoughts. Complete honesty is required. Feel the intense hatred. Once your emotions have peaked...

Now forgive that person for every real and imagined hurt ever done to you. Send that person waves of light, warmth and love. This will initially be impossible. Examine your blockages and thoughts. Stay with it. Believe me you will resist doing it even on an imaginary level. This may take several sessions to complete. When you can honestly send loving thoughts with no judgement or reservation, no residual anger, then come back here and report.

The proof is in the pudding.

Swami-
Maybe I just need more time... but I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to think happy thoughts about ______ ever again. I don't wish death (horrible or other) on ______, but nice thoughts... I don't think so.

It is not about the other, but about yourself. The other will not feel anything unless you physically interact with him/her.

Of course it is extremely difficult, but that is why it is such a powerful exercise in clearing internal emotional blocks.

I have tried somethign like this.....but all in all i just lie to myself..i still want that fuck to die. cause ya'll know when a best friend stabs you in the back, there is no forgiveness. atleast for a long time. Its like telling Ben Ladin(sp), its ok that you killed thousands, we don't care.....i could almost do it, but the bush adm won't budget, they all full of hate and rage all the time

Of course people would rather avoid this and talk about aliens or other fun stuff that requires NO change. Real spiritual growth takes courage. One will find a thousand reasons not to successfully complete the experiment.

Even if one cannot do it, you will at least become more familiar with your own dark side (revenge, anger, hatred, retribution) instead of pretending that you (not you specifically) are pure and beautiful.

i know i am not pure and beautiful. I know i will never be pure or my darkness. I wish i could be a peace with everyone and everything, but yes there are deep dark desires that most people have. I try to better myself by trying to be a peace with myself but there are times when it is very hard to stay incontroll, infact that is one of my worst fears....the fear of losing controll. I never want to lose control, i want to be in a state of peace and tranquility. But there are times when you need to have Anger and Hatred to servive.

peace out my brothers, for everyone has a bit of insanity in them

That's a good visualization Swami...very powerful one at that for people who carry a lot of hatred around. Cleansing ritual...

Here's a good one for anyone who wants to try it... try imagining yourself sitting the other chair. Visualizing loving, healing light emitting from you at any time can be cleansing.

Yes, but it is an even better experiment for people who think they carry little hatred and anger. Self delusion and denial are some of the biggest obstacles to growth.

Your experiment is also great for those with self esteem problems.

Actually, thats a fantastic experiment Swami, I think I'll try this one. I agree that spirituality must be about change- from the inside, changing yourself, your conciousness and growing as a person. This is one great way to do it.

A wise old man once told me that any hatred we have for another person, is actually a reflection of our own hatred for ourselves. We see in others the dark side in ourself. Connected...

Aww, you weren't supposed to reveal the "punchline". People need to discover this truth for themselves. You probably spoil the tricks at a David Copperfield show...

Ah yes, I've known this one for awhile, I heard the same thing. But it does kinda make the experience harder to actually go through if you know the "answer"

I was joking, it is still very effective. Most people cannot do it the first time, but discover a lot about themselves either way.

Indeed, you do find out alot about yourself durning this experiment, indeed, i did find that the hate i had for this certain person we really a mirror of other reason to hate ones self.

peace out my brothers, for everyone as a little bit of insanity in them

swami... i tried... but i cannot find one single human beeing i have that amount of hate for... there is a few people i kind of "dislike", but that is ok... they show me parts of myself i have to work on... and therefore i am grateful for their existance, although i must say it is hard to accept... but it is a great experiment, nontheless...
