Choose: Retribution or Societal Welfare?

#925817 - 10/02/02 05:53 PM (24 years, 12 days ago)

I just saw this segment on the news. It was about a jail system that implements this treatment program for violent offenders. The reporter said that after the treatment program, the former inmates are less likely to commit crimes again relative to jail systems that just lock offenders away. Of course there are some people that would be totally opposed to this. But if this system makes society safer, why would we not want to implement it everywhere? It seems to boil down to this: hardcore punishment for the crime and relatively high odds of recommitting (recidivism), vs. not so hardcore punishment and lower odds of recommitting. Fulfill our need for retribution or increase societal welfare.

Is retribution for a crime more important than the welfare of society as a whole?

In the case of violent crime, both are equally important.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers
