If time (and space) were created by the "big bang", how can there be a "before the "big bang""....?

Then there must be a "before time and space," or the big bang was like container exploding and spewing its contents, rather than an act of creation. Maybe time is just an illusion.

...or, if everything was created from nothing by someone, who created the Creator?

This question is equally prevalent regardless of whether there is a creator or not, but obviously an answer exists, and it is probably that everythingness is the default state, not nothingness, as something cannot come from nothing.

A creator creating things from nothing is a paradox, because if there's nothing then there is also no creator. If there's a creator, then there's already something.

It is my parroted scientific understanding that time and space are inseparable....

You're probably right that they won't get a divorce, but things certainly aren't the best between them... time is always complaining that space won't spend enough time with it, and space always hates how time won't go out to any of the places space wants to go....

Who knows.  Thats a kind of rhetorical question that doesn't really mean much and usually doesn't expect an answer.  Whatever realm our universe exists in may have been created by a consciousness or not, just like our universe.

Thankfully ideas being 'too silly' are not regarded as evidence of anything.

If you are going to propose that a creator evolved in another Universe, you must consider the questions this raises.  I say "too silly" because the concept of existence relying upon creation by someone results in an absurd repetition of the same baseless explanation, with no possibility of resolution.

I guess when looking at the idea of a creator, we have to more closely examine the concepts of beginning and end.

I have noticed a trend in that humans tend to personify the intangible in order to understand it (God is a wo/man damnit!).  We are born and we die, so therefore the universe had to begin somewhere, right?

Here is a simple Koan I really like that seems to fit:

What is your original face before your parents were born?

Thinking about this koan is much like thinking about the universe before the big bang.  It is completely intangible so we have to apply some parameters in order to know it (Like God, consciousness, universe, beginning, end, etc...)  But do these parameters help or limit our understanding?

Although at one time it was most likely very useful now I would consider it a severe limitation on human emotional progress. The one type of human progress that truly seems to move at a snails pace.

The idea of God is a being that ALWAYS existed.. there was no "Who created God?"  because then that creator would be superior to God...

The idea of God is that he exists outside of time, space, matter, and energy.  Therefore he is not bound by the resulting laws of these things.  It is not possible to comprehend how he exists.

But is it really "silly", as one poster puts it, to believe in God, opposed to believing that everything came from nothing?  How does something come from nothing? There is no logic in that, so why say there is no logical reason to believe in a creator?

It is interesting to see how many people immediately scoff at the idea of God, or the idea of a young earth, simply because of their limited knowledge of the evolution theory.  Key word 'theory'.

Anybody who does objective research will find that there is ample evidence for a young earth, and even if there were only ONE solid evidence against evolution it instantly puts the theory into question.  Yet there is a large amount of evidence to disprove evolution, but people still ignore it.

Having a little trouble letting go of your beliefs maybe?

The idea of anything existing on its own is too silly, the idea of existence is too silly, therefore nothing exists. Creator or no creator, the silliness is the exact same, yet stuff exists. Therefore an adequate answer exists to nullify the silliness, and to not acknowledge that is silly.

1. A theory is the highest truth in science.
2. The Theory of Evolution is the best proven theory in science.
3. The Big Bang theory and the Theory of Evolution are two separate and distinct theories from two different fields of study (cosmology and biology).
4. Objective research in geology has already disproven the idea of a young Earth.
5. There are "gaps" in the Theory of Evolution, but there is no evidence that disproves evolution.
6. As Terry Eagleton said, Christian faith is not reducible to factual knowledge. The age of the universe or the ways species develop should not be the foundation of your faith. A Christian should not even be concerned with these things unless he or she is a scientist or is interested in scientific knowledge.
