Slot Machines & Spirituality

Got some SPAM today from Tolly Burkan who popularized firewalking in the late '80s.
"Using Slot Machines as Biofeedback Devices: Awakening through the Unconventional."
Hey, I don't make this stuff up!
He is pushing a $500 seminar in how to beat Las Vegas using "spiritual principles". Uh-huh. This is your typical scam with the ever-present escape clause used so frequently on these boards.
If you win: You have obviously mastered the principles!
If you lose: You need more practice and insight, but soon you will be rolling in the cash once you apply faith and grok how the universe works!

Where do I sign up. I have 500 bucks burning a hole in my pocket. I need to spend it on premature enlightenment. And I also noticed that I believe you are the only other person I have ever seen use the word grok in normal conversation. I do and then I have to try to explain it to people who have never read the Book. It is such a great word. Thou art god.

Can't be that frequently. I've never seen it used.

Apparently you read different posts than I do.
If prayer doesn't work, you are not sincere enough.
If telekinesis doesn't work, you are not concentrating hard enough.
If telepathy doesn't work, it is only because of one's skepticism... and so on.
These "escape clauses" are prevalent and one of the "believers" main rationalisms.

You may scoff but I have taken the seminar and it worked for me.
I went to Vegas and won $50,000! It only cost me $60,000 to win it!
You can't beat them odds!

What about if you fail exams? Isn't this because you wern't trying hard enough?
What about if you can't play guitar like Jimi Hendrix after playing for 2 weeks? Is this because you havn't studied enough?
It's just a simple fact of life in most areas. I wouldn't call it a get-out clause.

Physical and mental skills, such as you list, can definitely be improved through diligence and practice. Metaphysical skills, which may or may not exist, are not linearly demonstrable.

I also think it is sad.
There are people in our society that don't have the time, resources, or cognitive capactiy to critically think about something like this. They see a promise for success made by a supposed credible authority, and jump at it. Telephone psychics, people talking to the dead...
EERRGGGHH!
... I guess just a symptom of a deeper problem with our society.

Because without that subclause, this thread would have immediately shifted topic. Don't worry, I am not mellowing.

I knew a guy in Las Vegas that made a living teaching craps. His lessons were "free". All he wanted was 10% of your winnings. Some people will swallow almost anything (like Bush's propaganda!).

Having expressed my sympathy for those who cannot critically think well, I feel obligated to share a site that I have found on the logical fallacies. I don't doubt that someone has already posted this. Everyone read up!

Nice work Buttonion. Now you'll have everybody reading logic and ripping my arguments to shreds. Way to go.
I was enjoying knowing all the logical fallacies all by myself. Then you had to go and ruin it!

Prayer is purely a mental skill? Is writing purely a mental skill? Making music? All these things often cross into the "metaphysical". There's that divine metaphysical spark beyond the skills you can learn. Are you really saying people can "learn" how to create like William Blake or "learn" how to write songs like Bob Dylan? Or play guitar like Jimi Hendrix? Jimi was 24 when he made "Are you experienced". Can you really "learn" how to create like that by the age of 24? I don't think so.

You have a very good point, Alex.
But you have also pissed Swami off and now I have no one to play with.
I hate you for that.
