Out of Curiosity...

Hey guys this question has been bugging me for several days now... Well heres a little history of me: Im a devout atheist and I consider myself highly spiritual. My definition of spirituality is self-defined as my ability to connect with nature. Well here goes the question: Who here is an atheist on the shroomery and if so do you consider yourself spiritual in your own terms? I don't want this to turn into some huge religious debate, I just want question to be answered. Thanks for all who respond.

Religion and spirituality are two separate things that exist independent from each other.
Though religion comes as a hindrance to spirituality. :shrug:

im jewish, ie my parents are jewish and i went to hebrew school and even full blown jew school for 5th grade...but i also went to catholic high school, and id have to agree that spirituality and religion are not always the same thing

i wouldnt say that im an athiest, but i sure dont believe in the traditional views of judeo-christian monotheism. i just read food of the gods and i really liked his take on "dominator culture" and how white, male, and ego-centric our culture is and has been for thousands of years. monotheism, specifically christianity embodies these male ego driven values to a tee. heres a snippet from McKenna:

"In the West there has been a steady focus on the ego, and the god of the ego - the monotheistic ideal. Monotheism exhibits what is essentially a pathological personality pattern projected onto the ideal of God: the pattern of the paranoid, possessive, power obsessed male ego. ... Also interesting is that the Western ideal is the only formulation of a deity tht has no relationship with woman at any point in the theological myth. ... These heavenly pairings are typical. Only the god of western civilization has no mother, no sister, no female consort and no daughter" - Food of the Gods

monotheism seems to me to be a construct of some ancient's imagination...but thats just me.

I was born and raised a Christian. I've tripped multiple times and sometimes felt like there is no god and there is just everything we have and can take in. But other times I have felt almost sure that there is a creator or something of the sort. I will never call myself an atheist because I know I will never truly be 100% sure of what I believe. I don't like atheism because it makes one seem like they know exactly what is what, for lack of a better word. However, the same could be said about Christianity, or Buddhism, or Taoism, Judaism, etc. I don't think we will ever be truly sure why or how we are here, but we can live our lives and do our damndest to figure it out. Thats just my take on things, take it with a grain of salt. :thumbup: :mushroom2:

I'm agnostic.  I don't believe God (the reason for the universe's existence) is knowable or understandable just as I can't understand how the universe exists as coming into being or always being.  I think those things are not comprehendable to the human brain just as the concept of gamma radiation is not comprehendable to a dog's brain.

I love nature.  I enjoy hiking and biking and being in trees and looking across fields and meadows, but I don't consider myself spiritual.  However, you might consider me spiritual according to your definition of the word.  The problem here is how the term "spiritual" is defined.

I define spiritual as believing in metaphysical spirits that do not take corporeal form, whether that entails a soul going to heaven/hell, being transferred to other organisms upon the destruction of the corporeal form, or haunting the old mansion on the hill.  So by my definition, you would likely not be a spiritual person.

But yeah, trees are cool and ghosts don't exist.  :smile:

Pondering...pondering... 

If 'God' is the cause of the universe then it must be knowable in some form, even if only to 'God'.  Humans just don't have the tools (brains) to know it.  But will evolution even result in an organism to the point of knowing God?  It is just as possible as anything else that evolution leads in a completely different direction than to know God.

Logic and reason has lead our species to understand many scientific principles so long as they are testable.  Sure, retracing the acceleration of the outer limits of the visible universe can be traced back in time and cosmic backround radiation is demonstrable but that doesn't tell us anything about before the 'Bang or its cause.

Even knowing so much about the universe, as a species, I still say the universe is unreasonable.  It started with no precursery existence or it always has been, both seemingly impossible to the rational mind.  I do not think reason will hammer this one out, but hey, there are a lot of very smart folk living today and who will live in the future.

Who knows?  That's why I'm agnostic :wink:

I'm an atheist, although I definitely believe in the possibility of there being advanced forces that live in a higher plane of consciousness of our own, being both knowing all seeing, all knowing, and infinite. You see, there could be any number of levels of consciousness above our own, so our god could very well have a god of their own, and down on the line into infinity. I've toyed with the idea that tripping lets us reach up a few levels into those other planes of being.

I don't believe in worshiping anything a la a religion though, its always seemed like a waste to me.

Well, let's see.. I'm Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, etc., etc. The list goes on forever.
Anyways, spirituality and religion are two seperate things. They can compliment one another, however.

I was atheist, I mean i was not believing in the kind of God that religions were teaching us, but my experiences opened the doors and that's what i thought :

God was something inter-dimensional, infinite, and it was like all the states of reality and consciousness, it was a kind of absolute, a vortex and I felt that we had to experience it, we cannot understand it or describe it, it is binded to the universe, it is the universe, it's powerful, it's not good or evil, it "is"... our goal is maybe to amalgamate with this force..
