ganja the herb of my nation
    #5144709 -

Ganja (Marijuana) is considered the "wisdom weed" by Rastafarians, as its use helps one to gain wisdom. Rastafarians use it as a part of a religious rite and as a means of getting closer to their inner spiritual self, Jah (God) and Creation.

Ganja is also seen by Rastafarians as the herb of life mentioned in the Bible. Rastafarians use of ganja is justified by the following Psalms 104:14 that says, "He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle and herb for the service of man, that he may bring forth food out of the earth." Rastafarians also say it was found growing at the grave of King Solomon in the Bible.

just some info i thot i would let the less knowledgable read about....taken from a website ....

relates to the thread anout weed being a psychedelic....sounds like rastas use it for the same reasons people use shrooms and acid in our culture...for the most part

I totaly agree. For me marijuana really helped me mature. Rastafarians are right when they call marijuana the "wisdom weed."

Maybe you were just maturing naturally like everybody else, and you just happen to smoke weed.

The statement runs the risk of being offensive, but it's hard to argue with the simple logic of the matter.

I often have wondered about that...whether I am maturing like everyone else...or if the choices I have made with psychedelics are the reason behind my new found thoughts....honestly I have spent alot of time meditating on that exact thought

i agree with calling it "wisdom weed". i see it as doing the same thing as mushrooms, just at a much milder level.

Let's just say King Selassie was never a Rasta.  When he visited Jamaica and the Rasta's said they wanted to go to Ethiopia, he told them no, and to stay there.

That's just a small, small part of the whole.  Go to a Barnes and Noble or something and read up on it.  It's just something a bunch of pot smoking uneducated slaves came up with one day.

MOD EDIT:  McDoopy, it wouldn't hurt if you tried to be a bit less offensive don't you think?

It is not a "joke". I think you need to read up on your history a little bit more first off. Secondly, Rastafarism is more of a philosophy than a religion. There is no set dogma of beliefs, no official church-like organization. I would hardly consider Marcus Garvey, the guy who "came up with it one day", a pot smoking uneducated slave. You have to understand where these people were coming from at the time, the oppression blacks were facing everywhere in the world.
There is real history in this, real emotions, real people, real experiences. Yea a majority of the first Rastas strongly believed Salassie was God, and some still do. There was a movement to move back to ethiopia, and salassie and his family did deny his divinity, and the back to africa movement kinda fizzled out. But what is left today is the philosophy, which is Very close to Judeo-Christian philosophy. Love of God, love, respect, and equality amongst all humans. Some rasta's still believe in Salassie's divinity, which could be looked upon oddly, but hey, some Christians believe getting slapped on tv will heal them.

With that said, I live my life with the rasta mentality, and I'm living good imo. Maybe do a little more research before you judge, make friends with some good rastas, you'll see that its a mentality that is still very present in American society, and is certainly not a joke. Its a message I wish more people would listen to. So many people these days are so confused with details about religions, bombarded with christianity to the point that they are sick of it before they even get a chance to reflect on its core meaning. people are immediately turned off when they hear the word Jesus because they don't want to associate with these "jesus freaks" they see everywhere spouting craziness like on the Christian News Network or whatever. they hear all the arguments but they see no message.

Rastafarianism for me, strips away all that craziness and goes right to the core: One God, One Love, righteousness, self-reflection, positive action. You can believe in Jesus if that's what you believe, you can believe Haile Salassie was God,  the only people who Rastafarianism isnt really for is Athiests.

To understand the mind of an athiest a really good website to read is http://www.whydoesgodhateamputees.com/. This is a very long, well thought out essay in which the athiest author attempts to disprove the "theory" of God. If you read it, its pretty much apparent that he wins his argument. But then again, he's debating himself, choosing the questions he asks himself. Read it if you have time, I wouldnt suggest letting it win you over though. If it does happen to win you over to the athiest's side, and you don't like the idea of being an athiest, talk to me and i'll be sure to win you back

what was i talking about... oh. marijuana leads to inward reflection, self-examination. I believe that one cannot achieve wisdom without said activities, so I believe that cannabis can be a beneficial aid to achieving wisdom. Sometimes, with some people, who have the right mindset in the first place.

That term is offensive to some rastas... One of the points of the religion is to get rid of "-isms".

And as far as being "a joke", what religion isn't? At least they aren't raping your children.
