Anna Freud's idea on how to control the unconscious mind of the typical democratic citizen

If you conform to accepted social standards your ego will be strengthened, and a strengthened ego will be better able to fight off the desires of the unconscious

To me that is seriously twisted. Does anyone else see a problem with this? Instead of weakening the ego you strengthen it and continue burying whatever problems lie underneath, as opposed to rooting out those unconscious problems

Do you think that's how some people suffer from serious mental health issues due to psychedelics? They weaken their ego to the point where the dam collapses, so to speak. A waterfall of unconscious desires just rises up and they don't know how to handle it.

I gleamed this tidbit of information from the documentary "The Century of the Self", which is proving quite interesting.

there is a sense of vitality or health when the plumbing works well
and some of the plumbing is social
good social plumbing can be achieved by being very normal at expense of inner development, but great social plumbing is developed by knowing yourself and having a giving heart.
this involves being unchained by normative pressures.

the ego is just plumbing.

The Freud perspective, if I'm not mistaken, is that man must rid himself of subconscious desires for the benefit of society, which is Freud's God IMO. So in that context, the stronger the ego, the better. It's a very twisted and primitive way to deal with our emotions and subconscious, and has led to the neurosis of the modern world IMO.

I agree. People who've built up a big shadow and been blind to it because of ego will be at least overwhelmed when confronted with all of it an once in the often ruthless manner of a psychedelic experience, especially if they don't know what's going on, or don't understand psychedelics, etc.
