What % of things are under your control...?
    #24997513 - 02/15/18 09:12 PM (6 years, 3 months ago)

I would say about 58% of the things in my life are under my control..

Stuff like physical movement,

The appearance and feeling of free will and choice..

The stuff thats not in control are the following..

Have to eat and sleep.. use the washroom.. need money to purchase or aquire anything in a capitalist system..

Need to be entertained, within reason, have to move or do somethimg..

Habits in general.. I need to wear clothes based on climate..

Have to breath fresh and filtered air..

Have to see the same freinds and family each year on and off..

Have to look at the same things everyday..

What do you guys think?

Depends on what you mean by "control." Things like physical movement, will, choice we can affect at times, but I don't think we really control them. It seems to me that control is mainly an illusion. Even if you're good at basketball, you're not really "controlling" your shot. Your subconscious is solving billions of calculus equations that you have no knowledge about. I would say that the whole thing could not come off without "you" as a conscious entity participating in it, but I think we really control a lot less than we think we do -- the vast majority of the time.

There are many paths to choose from and every response I have is in my control, I can choose the path I take.

If control is the power to influence behaviour or the course of events then I have 100%.

I found another one where you cant control..though you may influence:

Other people doing things..

Also getting stuck in a combo in a competitive game..

I control 0 of the world outside of me.

I control 0 of the world inside of me.

All I have is my interface between the two - my actions.

That is all.

Those are just degrees of influence.. not perfect control.. you can only delay sonething for a certain amount of time.. which reminds me..

Time is not under your control..

I don't know, I just know I have a daily routine that is based on years of finding out what I like and don't like. I control my environment well. In my room I have a negative ion generator, humidifier and heater. I keep the environment 75 Degrees F., 60 RH, air filtered and ionized. For my body I do self massage, tai chi, breathing meditation, eat at subway every day and take supplements. My finances are good too. I have more than I need in life. I don't masturbate or have sex. I work out every day, take cold showers and get the proper amount of sleep. As for control it's hard to say because it's not hard to lose control. Anyone could die any second from the most minor things within and without. Control seems to be an illusion, kinda like job security.

I think a lot of what we percieve as "not being in control of" is the societal "consequences" we OURSELVES lay down on each other.

Act in way X, receive treatment 1.

Act in way Y, receive treatment 2, etc.

When, in my "reality", it's act in any way along X/Y/Z - Receive no implied treatment, as long as it doesn't negatively influence my X/Y/Z.

So, cultural "pressure" influences our ideas/expressions of "control".

In my opinion, freedom exists ONLY in mutual not-controlling.

A house by a lake actually!

Lots of pine trees and green forest. Steel, brick and timber construction, suspended above the ground.

My boss designed it...

But it looks pretty cool.

I saw a lot of ducks and purple swamp hens today too, and had a water dragon climb over my foot.
Lots of sesbania trees by the pond.

Sounds like you have handy finesse work, mines giving a bit more tug and pull and poison to our carbon breathing friends. Keeping the natives on fleek.

You control how you respond to emotional stimuli and what you think about. Many religious archetypes hint at perfect mastery of this, but it takes a very long time.

You cannot control others, you cannot control how you feel (only how you respond to what you feel), and you cannot control what others feel.

what is the reason that drugs are negative for me?

I read about people doing drugs here and it seems to make their time cooler or something like that maybe

You can have an influence on your likelihood of a heart attack or stroke.

Quote:

Stroke is a largely preventable event. Many risks can be reduced by making lifestyle changes.
As we get older our arteries become narrower, but certain things can dangerously accelerate the process. These risks include:
  • smoking
  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • not doing enough physical activity
  • obesity
  • high cholesterol levels (often caused by a high-fat diet, but can result from inherited factors)
  • a family history of heart disease
  • excessive alcohol intake (which can also make obesity and high blood pressure worse, as well as causing heart damage and an irregular heart beat).

In mention of 'perfect control', I think a better question to ask would be, "What is there in your life that you cannot change or have influence over?"

So what is out of your control? (control being influence)

Obviously we weren't around to influence our own birth..

I don't think I started life in control, or that I could influence much as a toddler, but as I grew, so to do I think the control I have in my life has grown.

see my reply on free will
the focus seems to be on 'control'
but should be on the notion
that there is an object, unchanging, that is The 'Self'

if  there is no unchanging, uninfluenceable, object, that is the 'self',
the whole issue is moot or irrelevant

perhaps one could say
this missing the real issue
is precisely how the self perpetuates its illusory supposed central importance

it seems a tricky subject

yeah I agree it's probably true

I almost haven't done weed and lsd for years and have hardly drunk alcohol for years too

I don't know how I could have avoided it, what measures I could have taken, I think 2 times 45 minutes of meditation a day could have avoided it or 4 drawings a day.

I don't like alcohol and weed and lsd much. or at all.

but yeah I would like to become not messed up, maybe I am a little less messed up now, I just don't understand why it has taken so long. really weird. but wonderful for you guys that you like them and that they don't mess you up (you that they didn't/don't mess up)

I like to imagine I'm completely hopeless and there is no future for me. Then it feels like I'm just cruising.

If we had no hopes or fears, then we can just chill. Not saying I'm not hopeful or full of fear. But it'd be cool.

Hopes/fear I'd attribute to/as mental ponderings of the ethereal.

Opinions are utterly useless to linger on.

If you are just to survive, and not care for egoistic pursuits/dreams, you'd be more natural in those things you "want"

Basically a form of acceptance.

coming back from being really messed up shows the amount of control we have.
it is an enormous effort but can be done by working (conditioning and cultivating) the material (mind/body) we are made of.

is there a percentage for that? is it 1% or 100%, the transformation can be  extensive, including complete reversal, but the time it takes is lengthy.

it takes intention, application, patience, and getting out of the way (humility).

it can be measure the recovery or what we call it (in %).

I can't see that it is largely proveable, but. it is something I have that makes me think so, like instinct or intuition

If I presume that I have all the free will I feel I have,  I still think the percentage under my control is low. 5%,1%, maybe less.

free will is a meaningless discussion

setting in in the deciding moment is brain activity. like real. that happens. that exists.

maybe free will y only exists as your identity reflecting your actions, like your identity, self, brain acivity causing your actions like a wave from both ends of the picture (which is curved) of your identity moving into the middle and creating another curved wave spawning your movement

I agree, but those 1-5% could make a huge difference in your life. Especially if it is involved in things like: choosing what to study, choosing where to work, choosing who to marry, and choosing where to move.

that's right

and choosing to work

and choosing to not do a drug that one usually does at that time.

I don't think there's a limit to where one's actions if one is in control of 15% of one's actions can take you.

messed up is very much like being in a situation under pressure, negative pressure, because we are what we do, so because of what we do, but because we are what we do, so what we are (like our experiences) are less positive (because our situation is under pressure).

meditation seems to make our situation less under pressure like

1%. Control is mostly an illusion, and often a lie we tell ourselves. We apply the illusion of control in retrospect to things we had no control over because we don't want to admit that we have no control.

However, that 1% is so powerful that over time it can potentially overcome the other 99%. Or not.

coming back from being really messed up shows the amount of control we have.
it is an enormous effort but can be done by working (conditioning and cultivating) the material (mind/body) we are made of.

is there a percentage for that? is it 1% or 100%, the transformation can be  extensive, including complete reversal, but the time it takes is lengthy.

it takes intention, application, patience, and getting out of the way (humility).

Well you can definitely measure how well a person is since the inception of what they had to go through..like how they are doing currently compared to how they were..

That might be a topic for another post actually..

I have only recovered/built skill and wellness since my psychosis(which I was at 0%) at about say 58% which is the same amount that I think I'm free..

I think things are both out of an in your control.

You are allowed free reign of the instincts you were bred with and the situation you were placed into.

However, those two may not be in your control.

I believe instincts are from natural selection, but which one we choose has an external objective measuring stick and is within our control.

Well the fresh and free feeling of experience says you have freewil..

You are fully free and capable of doing and influencing what you want.. its a tanded choice and power station..

Will itself is supreme.. but this will follow your values and curiosity.. its easy to mark places/ideas where you are high at.. which you may or may not want to change.

True, 100% alive.
In this conversation we report various percentages of comfort/pressure/sanity;
and that meditation can take the pressure off (at least like a pause on the media player);
yet there is no real consensus about how much is under control.

This may be because the question is not relevant unless you are a general, or a manager of a department.
Life is not war or a factory (but both are symbolic cases in which control, repetition, and training are big issues - no wonder we walk around with the word resonating in our heads).

An infinite percentage of an allotted infinit-e.
Beyond your countable perception but on the order of degrees that can be understood and manipulated if you put in the proper effort. To many people focus on quantifying instead of living/expressing/understanding. Such people are fools in my book who will never achieve any sensible measures.

Perhaps the closest thing to control you will get is at the moment you either believe in it or not.

The number we attribute is simply an indicator of belief.

Although I'm not religious, Christianity is based on the idea we control our behavior.

The concept of temptation is about making choices (often in the midst of ambivalence).

The choices we make lead towards suffering (hell) or away from suffering (heaven).

Thats beautiful..I think Christ is the way, truth, and life.. His life is a crucifixion of both Hell and eternity(which is Heaven).. he alone stands true as the mediator(nothing) within The Bride(Satani).. and Eve as Evil.. Hell is a unique feature of time.. which means because God gave us freewill.. that we can choose to wrong and murder people.. or choose good which is salvation..

it's positive then mor or less

I said and meditated because of that 10 dollar post, for 30 minutes

I psyched about never ending journeys, like how they can make posts worth money like that

I think I am more lovely now, I said something to my brother and it was like it was more effective like I was a more positive influence

make like good at what I practice, I meant to say maybe closer to that

And by this I mean being honest..

But most don't speak honestly because there are some so called rules in society that say theyve commited a crime.. such as doing drugs for example..

how about I don't do any psychedelics and you let me know when (if) it's ok?

and which

for example if it's ok to do lsd later you can tell me I don't have the ability to know except I'm of the opinion that it's negative now

and can you let me know when it's ok for me to do salvia

Ferdinando;
as I understand the situation, you have an enduring connection to psychedelia without need for psychedelic drugs of any kind.
besides that, I am not a doctor, or a buddha, and I cannot undertake the responsibility you would like to invest in me.
I think your interest in doing drugs is an echo from your past enthusiasm, from a time when drugs was the only thing that was great. You are past that now.

yes I am trying not to buy cigarettes

but I get that like trying to convince others that the world is positive I was doing that last night with my brother, just saying that we do things to make the world better and that like makes the experiences better.

at least I think I get it I think you were doing that.

I was just like you don't have to do that with me because I'm doing it myself but I don't know I am not supposed to teach you. it's fine. I just know you are a reeeeeally great guy, I used to think about you a lot, but to me you have mostly been an internet thing, like I was just reading posts so seeing the posts was pretty much all there was to it.

also like thinking things like that we are not ok is maybe because the world keeps changing we are ok with my new computer I seem to have figured it out, like that we are ok basically and also some other things, but the world keeps changing and we get illusions and I am reincarnated every night.

but we are ok and it's positive positive states because of activities that are good for us and meditation but I think I have lost track of it some illusion has come up and the world keeps changing and we change because of it.

sorry for my flaws. and my screwed up ness.

great red

thanks

yeah it was a positive night

like in twin peaks where the person disappears in smoke in prison (like that kind of positive like the opposite of the difference between having disappeared and before that. like I got that view/truth(?) when I saw it.

I painted (a painting) today. I paint.

I used to be smartness crazy(?)

I haven't figured out if I became messed up from drugs
or if I became smartness crazy

drugs probably affected my dinking (thinking) negatively, like my philosophy or values. I probably became messed up.

I have found that meditation can work on one's values, maybe even the cycle of one's value (the cycle of one's values during one's time on earth).

pranayama yoga is an agent of balance (probably inner but probably outer too) and harmony

harmony is beautiful

it is almost very effective

it is not as good as meditation, maybe a little better than half as good

excercise, shower and meditation: "I'll bring your novel to gertrude stein" - midnight in paris

your comments make me think of this song
and I have song cuties with it for the last 2 days since having lunch with my daughter at Fat Pascha's

and I don't mind if it just plays forever.

Quote:

Really want to be with you
Really want to see you, Lord

I really want to go with you
Really want to show you, Lord

it was like the meditation could make a big difference.

meditation is an opportunity for cultivating bare awareness, i.e. being aware without feeding perceptions, just the bare sensing of mental objects, body, position, and breath.

bare awareness is extremely refreshing, but difficult if you don't at least try to practice sitting, but when you do get the hang of it you can do it anywhere, in any position.

it is never exactly the same.

anyway, yah,
when you practice bare awareness, adding nothing, and neither identifying nor resisting, it widens your ability to see things more clearly as they are (less wrapped up in conditioning or perceptions).

yes and I don't think it's like there is a time after a certain amount of meditation where it's now I've made it

I think it can keep being beneficial

after 1200 hours of meditation approximately it is like your influence skyrockets with approximately 15 minutes of meditation

how many hours had you meditated when you attained liberation?

I think I have meditated approximately 1200 hours

on a cushion and on sofa

I
bought a cushion
about half a year ago.

I have used it since. 40 minutes a day approximately.
sometimes more.

it is part of (the teaching of)  buddhism, that when liberation has been achieved there is no more to b e done.

before we know it we are 21

and we stay like that until we are 22 and it's not like that any more

you are not really a plant

I never claimed to achieve liberation (relief exists, but liberation - is it real?),
Anyway, I do get bare attention frequently,
and yes, it is kinda like 1/4 hit,
but it fades as I get entangled with my baloney, which is mine, and it often pops back when not sitting cross-legged just as a normal way to be.

how many hours? hmmm...maybe 4000 actual lotus sitting hours (not all of it in bare attention, but working with mind does not always go how you want), but I am way way older than you so you have done more sitting in a short time to get yourself together, but also you did more total drugs in less time than me too.

3/4 of my drug use was drug abuse

is there a way to like undo it or compensate for it?

like as if I filled a glass of water then emptying it?
like as if the water in the glass is screwed up ness and then like meditating it away or something like that

Well the obvious funny answer is: Knowing the percentage is not under my control.
Followed by wondering, is it under anybodies?
And lastly, is it even a meaningful question, since no one knows when they will die !!!!!

That makes sense, less wrapped up..

Slack, crap, wrap.. aggregates of our individual natures.. needing to know is awareness, and energy of a boundless continuum. Put a wall around that and we have Freemasonry.. coming back and forth..

when you are watching a movie or listening to music, your awareness is directed to those sources, your consciousness produces memories of that experience, ratiocination can engage but when it does you may lose the thread of what is happening.
after you have left the "theater" ratiocination is the opportunity for your consciousness to review and critique the entertainments.

each of these things are the result of a functioning brain but they are not each  the same function.

Typing with bare attention is possible but what you are describing is a series of concept envelopes (which are mental objects) that contain other concept envelopes.

Bare attention, however, is more of an engagement mode for the mind than a container concept in the stream of consciousness. The pre-communication ritual such as what you described - thinking up something to write/say - is a different activity.

The beginnings of ratiocination, with bare attention, stall under the cultivated flood of body signals before establishing links or resolving as  containers for other mental objects.

if we discuss bare attention, we are discussing concepts and forming mental objects to represent the aspects of it.
Thinking about it (in a series of embedded envelopes or however) is not the same as doing it.

hey the pronoun is too vague
"we're always doing it...we just aren't always enamored in it. "
what is it? (ratiocination, mind, awareness, bare attention?)
what does enamored in it mean? (in love? with what? thinking?)
