It is your craving and ignorance combined that causes suffering. The only way to stop your feeling of suffering is to stop this ignorant craving. There is nothing wrong with craving in itself, however, combined with ignorance results in suffering. Greed (I want!), aversion (hatred or dislike), and delusion ("My version of reality is the only correct one") stem from ignorance and ignorance is not seeing the truth. These three main defilements (greed, aversion, and delusion) in different combinations result in other unwholesome emotions like laziness, lust, jealousy, fear, etc....

If you are not ignorant of your craving and you choose not to take part in those three defilements by satisfying a craving then it is not ignorant craving. This is the second step towards ceasing suffering.

I don't like using the word desire because desire itself is not bad. Such as the desire to graduate a college, or the desire to drink water to prevent dehydration, etc.... As long as you are aware of the truth in craving you can skillfully become satisfied by fulfilling it completely.
