Beauty

Awhile ago I begin to believe that beauty was simply based on cultural norms and was entirely subjective. This idea has slowly eaten away my perception beauty itself. It just seems like an empty concept now. To a certian extent, it is as if I can choose to see something as beautiful or see it as ugly. The difference seems to be entirely based on a faint emotional reaction that I can rationalize in one direction or another. This has been a rather confusing development, to say the least. (It effects relationships in an odd way, especially with teh women.)

Here is my major concern about this: Have I shed an illusion or discarded an essential part of my humanity?

Some people saysthat beauty is subjective and that you cant just use some arbitrary standard with which to judge people beautiful. I disagree.

Give me a sample of 100 people out of all the ethnic groups in the world and i can pick out the persons that are "universally" good looking

You have shed an illusion but you have gone to far in rationalizing the emotion which, however slight, should be taken at face value.

If you can shed it and survive intact, it is not an essential part of your humanity.

Everything becomes hollow once you see the inside of it. A child who goes to Disneyworld sees all the little characters and the buildings and the rides, but he doesn't perceive the suffering workers being paid minimum wage so that he can enjoy himself. Beauty exists much in the same way.

Kind of a major generalization here don't cha think? I certainly don't feel that way about everything. Although I guess the mystery is in what you can't see inside of.

The concept of physical beauty is an evolutionary tool designed to help you find a suitable mate.
I can think of several more important (and relevant) traits to search for personally.

Why not take the existentialist approach and embrace the subjectivity of it? Be the creator of your own impressions, realize you're doing it, and love it.

or it can complicate it nicely:

harmonious cadences.

fair pairings, comings and goings,
gentle pressures, and sudden lifts and releases.
one can go on about melody and what makes her beautiful.

I think I have done this, to a certian extent. I've embraced the subjectivity of it all, but why create beauty if it doesn't really exist? I'd rather view objects free of any 'beauty-prejudice' and not confuse myself with arbitrary value judgements. Beauty is maya, I says.

Rationalizing an emotion is OK, but you have to be careful with logic. In some of us it (logic) runs too strong, and can drown out and replace the origional meaning of an emotion.

What I am trying to get at is that it is entirely based on a faint emotional reaction. You choose how you will take something like beauty, and that choice is made - whether you like it or not - with your emotions.

Of course, that is not to say that emotion is always right...logic can (and in those susceptable will) trump emotion.

beauty doesn't really exist, but the experience of witnessing beauty exists.

What is important is that, if you witness beauty, that you have witnessed it. What is NOT important, and what is detrimental to the ability to bear witness, is to label, dissect, categorize, and analyze.

These spockian sort of views of things create a world in which we are above our words, looking down on them, and mistaking the words for that which they truely represent.

The right brain is however, submerged beneath the words, and is responsible for giving birth to them. Any word it expresses is a profound conveyance of truth, as it is grasping for anything, anything at all to describe the ineffable. And it often uses the language that it has already been given, but its understanding of the words and the contexts are a bit different.

Immersed in the totality of experience on may say such a simple tiny sentence such as : "We exist to find perfection in the imperfect." and this sentence is so complete and wonderful that you spend many many minutes marveling at its pure beauty, its pure resonance with all that is good.

But if you are not submerged beneath words, "We exist to find perfection in the imperfect." has almost no meaning to you, it is just skimmer over, a robotic scanner not allowed time to stop and smell the flowers, rather, forced to catagorize, catalogue, blink, and move on.

and so.

There is no such thing as beauty but there is a such thing as beauty. Direct perception through ages has created the word, and very hollow cataloguing standards have shaped our perceptions of what this word means, but beauty to the artist is ineffable..... he does not see a sunset and say "how pretty". He sees a sunset and is moved to tears.

The consumer, however, sees a sunset, in 1/100th of a second calculates a response, and in 1/2 a second delivers it: "beautiful" and what a lie, isn't it... what a sad lie.
