Knowledge
    #6530355 -

Knowing that the more you read the more you learn. The more you learn the more intelligent you become. The more intelligence you have the more facts you can talk about. Right now i'm studying computer systems tech in college. When i graduate i might take a few classes at the local community college. Perhaps i'll take Logic, and even Philosophy. If I don't I plan on getting books and expanding my knowledge. I have a highschool History Of The World book, has plenty of information in there to keep me thinking and expanding my mind(Knowledge and Intelligence).

I was wondering though how I can become experienced after learning this stuff by applying it all to my real life. How things I read can effect my actions that I take in the real world. What information I should forget and what I should remember, changing myself each time I read something new that applies to my actions in life.

So what are some of your goals that you wish to accomplish after you read and get new information to live by?

Peace,
Droz

Knowledge is not limited to what comes out of books or what's taught to you by others...

In my opinion, true knowledge comes from experience, it does not lead to it. I find it ridiculous that we measure intellect in book smarts. My older brother is working towards a post-doctrol degree in molecular biology and he has no common sense. How intellectual is that?

Take life as it comes to you; do what feels best to you, seek to increase your understanding of life itself, by experiencing it; not just understanding things that pertain to how you live.

Good reply Cilosyb.

Yeah the more you grow the more you experience and the more you become comfortable with yourself.

i'm a true believer that you only really learn something by doing it. books are great as resources but you really don't learn what you read untill you preactice it.

I agree with you for the most part, however, I don't think experience is all there is to it. There are some things I seem to know intuitively, and some things I know by reasoning.

I don't agree that by mere learning you become more intelligent. Some people can still have psychological traits which preclude them from taking the right course of action no matter how much they learn about a subject. For example, I could always Ace my tests in wood shop, but when it came to even the simplest hands-on task I would fail utterly-- I couldn't even sand a flat board.

I think that is because intelligence is a more general trait, whereas learning is a single activity. I think learning can aid intelligence, but it's not automatic, and I think other activities can aid intelligence too--activities like exercise, proper eating, mental activities, etc. Also, I'm pretty sure there are different kinds of intelligence.

In fact, I think learning can sometimes make a person less intelligent. What if you learn the wrong thing? What if you are abused for example until you believe the Bible, and so learn an authoritarian attitude? Or what if you learn some slick propaganda on fox news, which colors your perceptions of political issues? As a matter of fact, polls show that people who watch fox news regularly are if anything less informed on the subject of Iraq then people who don't watch the news at all.

That isn't to say I see no point in learning. I just don't see the point of learning just to become more intelligent or at least I find the method dubious. I like to learn because I find the act intrinsically satisfying and meaningful. I think learning, like art, is something a person should do more for its own sake then for the sake of improving one's abilities.

how would you define intelligence?
is it the same as knowledgeable?
I dont agree that someone can read alot of info and memorize it and be more intelligent(smarter). There are alot of people who read books all day long all their lives, but cant figure out how to do simple things like say, talk to a girl and relate to her, or be at ease around other people. There are people who never read a book but figure things out for themselves and are very smart.
Sometimes i think birds, say, are just as smart as humans. Us humans have just developed our minds more(sparked by the use of drugs long ago- thanks). There are people who study all the time, but may die an unhappy, unguided soul. I say balance yourself out. Reading is good, and knowledge is power, but what if you read about the history of say... the television? And you know everything about the television, so now so much of your mind is taken up with tv knowledge... eh..
do you get the point?

I don't see the point of defining intelligence or knowledge, seeing as this is a philosophical issue on which the definitions themselves will be determined by philosophical biases.

As for what you said about getting info and then being more intelligent, you are right. I actually said in my above posts that there are different types of intelligence, and that learning doesn't equate to intelligence.

As for your prescriptions, I'm not sure what you mean. I agree with the idea of balance, but I think the quest for balance can itself be taken to an extreme. Taken to an extreme, it implies that people are supposed to live their lives the same way-- and that to me is wrong because it detracts from human diversity. Just bear in mind, that having different types of extremes in a given society could itself create a balance within that society. It would make for a deeper, more diverse, and more interesting balance as well because there are qualities that only come when some people go to extremes. People like Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin would never have existed if everyone was equally balanced.

I don't think a definition is necessary for knowing what words mean. I think we already have a general concept of what these words refer to, based on past use, and association.

i could think of intelligence of how much info your brain holds, or how open you are and improvisational with your learning. both very different. it does matter

i was just saying its better to be well balanced as in, knowing facts from reading, but also INCORPORATING them into your daily life. A bunch of useless knowledge about useless facts such as television cant help you in your day to day life very much

Actually, only lay people do that. Psychologists don't measure intelligence by having you list all of the facts you know on a peice of paper. It's only dummies who equate "lots of factual knowledge" with "intelligence."

Why don't you think about what you just said before saying goofy things. Above, you just said that knowledge comes from experience. Now, I know that scientists are often criticized for only having "book smarts" but the people doing the criticizing aren't scientists (and I suspect that you aren't one). If you knew anything about science, then you'd know that science is all about learning from experience and nothing else.

Since "common sense" usually consists of stupid ideas like "lots of factual knowledge = intelligence" and "scientific knowledge = book smarts", then I'd say that your brother is probably very intelligent.

Quote:
Take life as it comes to you

Vague statements are also a sign of intelligence, I suppose.

Quote:
increase your understanding of life itself, by experiencing it;

Sometimes we can't always do that. The reason that scientists publish papers is so that not every other scientist has to repeat their experiments. Scientific papers (except for review articles) usually are written so that you can visualize or imagine yourself carrying out the exact same experiment. It's like a very vividly written book. Sometimes we have to go out and read summaries of what others have discovered, but experimental science epitomizes the kind of knowledge that you're talking about.

I really wish that more people would realize this. Too often have I seen scientists criticized for having no common sense, not being able to work with their hands (which is so dumb that it's funny), or only having theoretical knowledge. Many of the "common sense" stereotypes are based on misconceptions that are largely considered to be "common sense."

That's presuming I think definitions are necessary in the first place. If I don't consider definitions as important from the beginning of the argument, I don't see why it matters that you can define a word in two different ways.

Well that's somewhat relative. I'm sure you can say that knowing a lot about television won't help you much in your daily life, but I doubt debating on internet forums does either. I think to some people knowledge is an intrinsic good, especially if its in an area of interest. If those people find some sort of gratification in knowing a lot about television, that knowledge is helpful to them.
