I’ve found God, says man who cracked the genome

THE scientist who led the team that cracked the human genome is to publish a book explaining why he now believes in the existence of God and is convinced that miracles are real.
Francis Collins, the director of the US National Human Genome Research Institute, claims there is a rational basis for a creator and that scientific discoveries bring man “closer to God”.
His book, The Language of God, to be published in September, will reopen the age-old debate about the relationship between science and faith. “One of the great tragedies of our time is this impression that has been created that science and religion have to be at war,” said Collins, 56.
“I don’t see that as necessary at all and I think it is deeply disappointing that the shrill voices that occupy the extremes of this spectrum have dominated the stage for the past 20 years.”
For Collins, unravelling the human genome did not create a conflict in his mind. Instead, it allowed him to “glimpse at the workings of God”.
“When you make a breakthrough it is a moment of scientific exhilaration because you have been on this search and seem to have found it,” he said. “But it is also a moment where I at least feel closeness to the creator in the sense of having now perceived something that no human knew before but God knew all along.
“When you have for the first time in front of you this 3.1 billion-letter instruction book that conveys all kinds of information and all kinds of mystery about humankind, you can’t survey that going through page after page without a sense of awe. I can’t help but look at those pages and have a vague sense that this is giving me a glimpse of God’s mind.”
Collins joins a line of scientists whose research deepened their belief in God. Isaac Newton, whose discovery of the laws of gravity reshaped our understanding of the universe, said: “This most beautiful system could only proceed from the dominion of an intelligent and powerful being.”
Although Einstein revolutionised our thinking about time, gravity and the conversion of matter to energy, he believed the universe had a creator. “I want to know His thoughts; the rest are details,” he said. However Galileo was famously questioned by the inquisition and put on trial in 1633 for the “heresy” of claiming that the earth moved around the sun.
Among Collins’s most controversial beliefs is that of “theistic evolution”, which claims natural selection is the tool that God chose to create man. In his version of the theory, he argues that man will not evolve further.
“I see God’s hand at work through the mechanism of evolution. If God chose to create human beings in his image and decided that the mechanism of evolution was an elegant way to accomplish that goal, who are we to say that is not the way,” he says.
“Scientifically, the forces of evolution by natural selection have been profoundly affected for humankind by the changes in culture and environment and the expansion of the human species to 6 billion members. So what you see is pretty much what you get.”
Collins was an atheist until the age of 27, when as a young doctor he was impressed by the strength that faith gave to some of his most critical patients.
“They had terrible diseases from which they were probably not going to escape, and yet instead of railing at God they seemed to lean on their faith as a source of great comfort and reassurance,” he said. “That was interesting, puzzling and unsettling.”
He decided to visit a Methodist minister and was given a copy of C S Lewis’s Mere Christianity, which argues that God is a rational possibility. The book transformed his life. “It was an argument I was not prepared to hear,” he said. “I was very happy with the idea that God didn’t exist, and had no interest in me. And yet at the same time, I could not turn away.”
His epiphany came when he went hiking through the Cascade Mountains in Washington state. He said: “It was a beautiful afternoon and suddenly the remarkable beauty of creation around me was so overwhelming, I felt, ‘I cannot resist this another moment’.”
Collins believes that science cannot be used to refute the existence of God because it is confined to the “natural” world. In this light he believes miracles are a real possibility. “If one is willing to accept the existence of God or some supernatural force outside nature then it is not a logical problem to admit that, occasionally, a supernatural force might stage an invasion,” he says.

I can definitely see that. I wonder if he's also taken a different position on how science progresses, and how studies progress... taken into account the different consequences modern science has been the basis of, and maybe if he's given thought to science without side-effect. I'm interested in maybe picking this up to find out.

Garenteed he found a fresh batch of cyanscens and after having felt the overwhelming energy of the shroom he was able to recognize the unexpicable, brilliant beuty which surrounded him. Though, any person can deduce that he is a man who has just reached the pivital moment of his life and has accomplished unknown power. He could be super pyhcotic hyper depressive and still experience supreme joy and satisfaction out of accomplishing that, none the less an amazing thing, though I do not even understand what it means....Amazing man for sure.
And of coarse there is a "God" in the sense of a supreme order to the universe. I dont know if this is so much the God of the bible, but there is a God, that much I know and it didnt take a scientific discovery to realise it (edit - Yes it Did actually) though it seems all very poetic, in a scientific, spiritualic sort of way...
Ho Ha Ho Ha...me cut stick, make fire, make baby, make home, make language....Who in control?

I'd like to add to this thread please. i perceive we are offered more of a vision than a feeling. May so this vision be not ineffable, transient, unitive or blissful
but it must offer some ultimate INSIGHT, however strange,
paradoxical, and unlike ordinary knowledge... It grips us with the
certainty that we are seeing things "the way things are"
When the external world and one's self seems to dissolve into a
formless unity.... Nirvana , liberation , realization , awakening and
enlightenment are all inter-twined, sporadic flashes of insight yield to a long
term shift in visionary insight.
After experiencing something like this you might have the thought, i know i did, that maybe god is real, if you can't perceive what your doing here in this life since the day that you were born, for real, without a doubt no clue (theres lots of people like this) HOw can You really live life to its full exstent? or experience everything we are truely designed too? the need for us to progress as humans is essential for our survival, and yet, still, it feels the mass of society is going backwards and regressing becoming weaker and weaker. To experience life at its fullest degree through what god could possibly of created for Us to take use and improve ourselves and others around us, is an incredible thing in itself. experiencing "how life really should be perceived" Can't we all be better than we really are? An insight into the eye of the lord, will eventually get everyone... In away we are almost forced to become better people (8

“When you have for the first time in front of you this 3.1 billion-letter instruction book that conveys all kinds of information and all kinds of mystery about humankind, you can’t survey that going through page after page without a sense of awe. I can’t help but look at those pages and have a vague sense that this is giving me a glimpse of God’s mind.” -i can relate to this with a passion
on another thought... the earth is constantly spinning right... If the creator of any world were to decide he no longer likes what he sees, He would eventually take things into his own hands, apparently this has happened before... consider the great flood in the bible (ancient history once happened.) All but few had been washed away ... isn't it safer to assume that it could happen again than to be ignorant and not... the earths core is very hot, hotter than we know, for a reason real ultimate unbeknown reason maybe? when the earth becomes under to much stress. From mankind. is it so, that logically like the skin of an orange can sort of slip if pushed, thus ruining usually bruising the orange, our existence is under much similar circumstances to the orange, a slight slip of the outer ore of our earth is already proved to be happening, just look at volcanoes and the like...think about it on a bigger scale, think about when the earth gets really fed up with us and becomes even hotter in its core, to a point where the core becomes loose, it could cause massive consequences to the shell, resulting in a huge slip of the shell around the molten lava, in a sense making our world tilt and splash water everywhere as the great flood once seemed too. Thus producing world wide saturation and a possible way for god to get rid of us And start again... yup i believe this guy is onto something great, Sherlock, keep up the good work. It's a bloody good point, we are only destroying ourselves maybe because we won't accept what is actually really real... Jesus apparently spoke of us needing to love one another as a whole for things to work... look what happened to Jesus... He sacrificed himself to help us to realize we are gods creation maybe and that we can all be better than we really are. will everyone every except the truth?, i don't think so... But it can't hurt to change yourself and teach your kids a thing or 2.... can it?

Ya, because everyone who's had a mystical experience must have had it while on psychedelics.

yeah so in a sense jesus and i aren't very far apart, unless your consumed by the devil...i do Wonder if Jesus was completely devine in nature, or saw nature as devine or both and or realised his teachings weren't enough to help all the people come to grips with Gods creation alone... so he pissed people off and mad e the ultimate sacrifice to make people beleive... god created a devine nature... In him the world around us and us, we all are presented with a choice to make the choice jesus made... but do most of us choose too, no i don't think so, this is worrying......?

He wasnt poking sticks, just pointing out that one doesn't have to consume shrooms, to have a spiritual experience.
