In-depth books on Ego-God connection or the Dark Night of the Soul?

Is anyone familiar with books that would cover Ego-God connection, transcendence of the Ego, Dark Night of the Soul theme or something similar? What I'm looking for is everything that would shine more light on the process of shedding the ego and the turmoil it brings with it.
"Ego and Archetype" by Edward Edinger is the only thing I found that covers this topic in real depth, so anything similar would be highly appreciative. Jung maybe?

Even though I haven't read these books they have been recommended to me by trustworthy, good people.
After the Ecstasy, the Laundry: How the Heart Grows Wise on the Spiritual Path - Jack Kornfield
Spiritual Emergency - Stanislav Grof (also Stormy search for self by his wife)

The teachings of Ramana Maharshi shed a lot of light on the ego-God connection in my opinion. you can download all his books for free at this website: http://www.ramana-maharshi.org/ashram_frameset.htm

I have some of Grof's books but not the Spiritual Emergency, so thanks for bringing that up. Thanks for the free downloads too!

Edinger's book is one of my favorites, but how about the original The Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross?

Well, I though about it for a while and then it just slipped my mind I guess. St. John of the Cross it is, then. Thanks!
