Report: Iraq war costs could top $2 trillion

The irony is this war is supported by many conservatives. I thought they were interested in reducing government spending.

in the long run it stabilizes prices while promoting a stable region.

Promoting a stable region in what sense? Iraq is on the brink of a civil war that could last decades.

Conservatism no longer means what it was intended to mean. At one point I considered myself a conservative (smaller govt. involvment, lower taxes..yadda yadda). Bush has destroyed the meaning of the word conservative and jumped right into Neo-Con territory. It saddens me that this has happened (since i voted for him in the 1st election). It seems as though there is no difference between the two sides.

Cost of Iraq War $291 Billion So Far
From the Associated Press
July 14, 2006

WASHINGTON — The war in Iraq has cost $291 billion so far and would total almost half a trillion dollars even if all U.S. troops were withdrawn by the end of 2009, according to a Congressional Budget Office analysis released Thursday.

The nonpartisan CBO analysis comes after congressional debate over whether to set goals or timetables for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq. Congress declined to set a timetable, but the Pentagon hopes to start drawing down forces by the end of the year.

The CBO study estimated future appropriations based on two scenarios provided by Rep. John Spratt Jr. (D-S.C.), who commissioned the report.

The more optimistic scenario is based on the U.S. maintaining troop levels in Iraq at 140,000 through next year, but quickly dropping them thereafter and pulling out most of them by the end of 2009. Under this schedule, the Iraq war would cost an additional $184 billion for the 2007-2010 budget years.

Under a more pessimistic scenario, with a slower drawdown of troops and a continued U.S. presence of 40,000 over the long term, the Iraq war would cost $406 billion over the next decade, the CBO said.

************************************************************************

So after more than three years, the cost to the US is almost 0.3 trillion. If US troops stay another decade, the total cost is estimated to hit 0.7 trillion -- or an average of a bit under 54 billion dollars a year for a total thirteen years expenditure.

That's a lot of money -- a billion and change a week for thirteen years could buy a lot of medicine for poor folks. That's 50 cents a day from every man, women, and child (even including the illegal immigrants, mind you) in the US, every day, 365 days a year, for thirteen years!

I'm guessing its costing me around $2000 dollars a year?

Shit! I pay $8000 dollars a year on property taxes alone. and that $8000 is money going straight down the TOILET.

If its only costing me $2000 dollars a year to kill a bunch of terrorists in Iraq-then it's some of the best spent money ever.

Put me down for another $2000 for Iran.

I will gladly hold your $2000 for Iran in the "Let's Nuke Iran" account for you. Your name will be engraved on your own Iranian Yellowcake coated plaque secured by Special Ops prior to the nuking.

Why spend money on watered down income taxes that have stupid things like Welfare payments associated with them when your money can be used 100% for noble causes?

Hang on, wern't you complaining about workers in San Francisco getting health benefits? Wouldn't 2 trillion have helped pay for health benefits?

Yeah, and the REALLY funny thing is that Gary Becker, another Nobel prize winning economist (and a far better one than Stiglitz, I might add, though that's obviously subjective), is of the opinion that the study quoted in the opening post of this thread is completely unrealiable.

You can read his opinion here: http://www.becker-posner-blog.com/archives/2006/03/the_economics_o_2.html

I'll quote my favorite bit:
Quote:
They assume that the war increased the price of oil from $5 and $10 a barrel for between 5 and 10 years. These are sheer guesses that are far from obvious.

EDIT: Just to be clear, I was ALWAYS against the invasion of Iraq. I thought it was a horrible idea, and I think that the money spent is a waste, and would have been better spent in the hands of the taxpayers themselves. I just had to spread Becker's call of "bullshit" on Stiglitz.
