Our Lady Peace: Spiritual Machines
    #501782 - 12/26/01 07:31 PM (23 years, 1 month ago)

I mentioned Our Lady Peace awhile ago, and now I'm going to do it again. The album Spiritual Machines is very good, and many of you might find it quite "relavent" to your lives. Others may not, but I'm not worried about you.
I got my copy of it last christmas (2000), it is my only OLP album, and really the only reason I wanted it was because it was a concept album based on The Age Of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil. (A book I find quite enthralling.)
So, without hearing a single song off the album, I get the CD for christmas. I begin listening to it later that night, and am blown away by the bearing it had on my life. It is, quite simply, something that fits me straight up. (without any metaphors and hazy, general ideas to cloud it...)

I would reccomend anyone interested go to ourladypeace.com and check it out. You can listen to samples of all the songs off the album without downloading, just click on Spiritual Machines. Number 7 might intrigue you (as well as many, if not all the other tracks...).
Here's a sample of the lyrics,

Everyone's A Junkie:

I'm not waiting for the answers
On a Sunday afternoon
I'm just too drunk to remember
Why I always slip through

The drugs and fake ambition
Have been helping me to hide
But it's the endless television
That has kept me inside

Where does it stop?
Where does it end?
Where do we go?
Why am I always complaining?

I can be good
I can be bad
I can ne loved

But everything's gone black
You're looking for that sun
You're looking for that light
Lonely, you're not the only one to feel this way

Go here for the rest of the song (and all the others): http://ourladypeace.homepad.com/

This might not be "Tool", but I think it's extremely relavent, and refreshingly clear cut. This is one of my favorite albums.
Like I said before, I don't have any other Our Lady Peace albums, and I'm not a huge fan of their music in general (haven't heard too much of it really). I am however a huge fan of good music, wherever it comes from. This album has brought me back from some very dark places. I find it equally inspiring as anything else, but in a positive way. (and that is something very rare in my life.)

This one is for you. It's about you, not God, not the blind masses or any of that shit. If it's not about you, well then I'm not talking to you.

I thought a reply might sweeten the deal, bring a little more attention. I'm sorry I've had to resort to this, but hey, only 10 views so far and 0 replies... This saddens me.
Has anyone checked out the website? It's pretty interesting... I was sure someone would appreciate this. (maybe I'm a little premature, but I'm impatient, and I don't forsee much change.)

Check it out, you (hopefully) won't regret it.

this seems cool

Naveed
are you there, and is it comfortable? did you want to escape, try to escape the population? the pressure is deceiving, and for you particularly should we let a young man die? let him die if he wants to? I can't live here anymore it's hard when you reach for that floor and and there's something that tears me inside, so I can't go
brother are you there?
now tell me is it wonderful
or were you hoping to find something a
little more?

climbing down the hours I need to know
now
do the hands of time only rule this
chapter
i'll have to try once again, i'll have to try
when I want to
there he's on his knees again
trying hard to understand
why Naveed would let a young man die
convinced that he might break he reaches
for that phone
and then another day has gone

Ah yes, I remember that song, quite well actually. I remember watching the video at my cousins house in BC. There were a bunch of kids living in a junkyard, running around doing weird things, eating weird fungus stuff (don't read as "shrooms", I just remember as some weird fungus stuff).

I believe a tank was involved. I remember my cousin and his friend trying to figure out what the hell Naveed was. To this day I don't really know...
I was sure they said "I can't Naveed anymore, but it's hard when you reach for that floor..."

Kid A is awesome. If you like Kid A, definately check out Amnesiac, their followup. (If you haven't already.)

our lady peace is one of my favorite bands. almost like them as much as TOOL.
Heres a little something about the song Naveed

"It's named after a friend of mine," Maida says. "His name is Naveed. He is Iranian and one day he told me the background (of the name) was a person referred to as a bearer of good news. The album title "NAVEED" kind of ties in all the lyrics. 'Naveed' talks about someone scared to die ,but at the same time interested in it. Naveed was playing with a gun and was unaware that one chamber within the gun contained a bullet. We took the concept of Naveed and placed it in the dark optimism of our music. We have forced Naveed to travel the distance between mysticism and bitter reality.." (Michael 'Raine' Maida) " 'Naveed' is about the afterlife. But not like heaven or hell; like the afterlife as another step into your souls life; as in Buddhism. The song seems to be directed at someone who has died. And it seems to be wondering what the afterlife could possibly be like, and even wanting to die, but being torn by the instinctual fear of death."
