Shroomery ~ Spiritual Experience?
    #792223 - 08/02/02 10:14 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Are the Shroomery message boards (the entire WWW for that matter) a
spiritual/quasi spiritual experience?

Less than 2 decades ago, most people could only communicate long distance
via telephone, mail, or facsimile. Now with the WWW, humanity can communicate anywhere
instantaneously. I find this similar to astral travel or transcendental meditation.

I enjoy the convenience of traveling on a major interstate highway, to reach my
destination in an expedient fashion. However, it is always nice to take some side
roads, which slow my travel, so I may be able to enjoy the local sights, aromas,
and sounds.

With this speedy sharing of thoughts and ideas, is mankind unwittingly accelerating
into a new age/dimension? Do we need to slow down a bit and take stock of our
world, before we step on a proverbial landmine?

Any thoughts on the impact of the WWW on the world, and the comparison to the
unseen spiritual world? After all, we are communicating as a disembodied individual
when posting to these message boards.

Peace to Everyone

Interesting topic with mind boggling ramifications.

If consciousness is an emergent property of organized matter, it would only be a matter of time before our communications networks reach a critical mass that would give rise to a 'meta-consciousness' of which we would act as individual neurons.

It is a scary concept because it would mean the loss of individual identity, freedom and privacy. It would mean the end of the individual. As disturbing as this seems in an individualistic society, we should prepare for the possibliity that this is the natural course of evolution for the human race. We might very well be the primordial "single-cell organisms" - precursors to more complex forms of life.

It is an incredible thing that we have here, unparalleled in the history of the world. The closest thing was the HAM radio operators communicating all over the world; and later, CB radio operators sharing ideas and friendships locally.

Here is the thing though that so many here seem to forget. We are communicating because of study and the application of logic and reason, not through metaphysical means, nor through hope, prayer, affirmation, ESP or anything else. Science works.

As does faith. Without faith in theory, which begins as an individual idea, a
scientist would not have the inspiration to move forward in his/her studies
and experiments.

The faith based on observation and experiment is far different from the way that the word faith is usually applied here. Ohm's Law of electrical conductivity is the same for every nationality. Whereas the "faith in God" phrase is based solely on internal states, hence the wide variety of interpretations.

Just because the word "faith" fits grammatically well in the sentence does not mean that the nuances of the word in the two examples are the same at all.

Ohm's Law of electrical conductivity

Where did the above law originate from. I guess somebody must have
had faith in an idea. The idea was only theory until it became widespread
belief. Many have faith in God/Spirituality, which is an idea that has become
widespread belief. However, many laws have been changed through
science and research because those laws are merely commonly held
beliefs.

Human beings become very unsettled when their belief systems are
challanged. Hence, their reality may not be what they perceive it to be.

Science works.

For some things but not for all. Science has all the neat technological inventions tied up with pretty tiny bows. But it was not science that gave you the wisdom you shine. It was philosophical thinking combined with your experiences that did that.

Cheers,

Nice to be so absolutely faithful to a tool is it? Let's see. I'm not so optimistic. The learning curve is a bit out of our (average) reach I'm afraid. It's a ship of fools were on IMHO.

The dinosaurs lasted 140 million years without science. Human beings have brought the planet to the brink of complete self-destruction after around 400 years of "science". Do you really think we will be around in another 140 million years? I can't see science helping us last that long.

Incidentally, the vast majority of the earths population doesn't have refridgerators etc. Billions of people are starving. The situation is getting worse, not better. Scientific advances appear to be allowing rich nations to destroy the planet and exploit poorer countries leaving the vast majority of people far, far worse off than they were 1000 years ago. What price "progress"?

Yes humans are a failure as a species, that's why our population is at an all time high, that is why average life expectancy has been continually increasing. If our species is so bad, please don't spread your defective self-loathing genes. The world will be a better place if my children don't have to put up with the likes of you.

Incidentally, the vast majority of the earths population doesn't have refridgerators etc.
Two hundred years ago the figure was 100%. Isn't that an improvement? Has indoor plumbing decreased in the past two hundred years? How many more sewage treatment plants are there now than two hundred years ago? What about dysentery - how do the rates two hundred years ago compare with the figures today? Tuberculosis? Death during child birth? Slavery? (I admit, two hundred years is an arbitrary time period)

Scientific advances appear to be allowing rich nations to destroy the planet and exploit poorer countries leaving the vast majority of people far, far worse off than they were 1000 years ago.
See the prior two sets of comments. How many vaccines did they have in 1002 A.D.? Why is human advancement in some areas of the world an indictment against all of humanity?

Believe me you are not the first one to liken the internet to this...In fact a lot of the internet creators big wigs have hinted that the idea was concieved while tripping...look at internet magazine's such as "Wired" their are TONS of hidden and multi meanings in therethat in my mind, allude to tripping.

Interesting post.

The last thing this world needs is yet more of your hateful virus-like "children"

There is no use having vaccines when there isn't even enough food or water to sustain people. Can you understand this?

Are we going to last another 140 million years? What long term benefit will science be to our species? Is the world any better off now than it was 1000 years ago? The ice caps are melting, the planet is destroyed and we are living through the greatest mass extinction in history. We arn't even going to last as long as the dinosaurs! Science is leading humanity over the cliff and as we leap idiots like you say "Isn't it great having a TV!!" Yeah how wonderful. Pity we destroyed the planet but never mind - at least we all had a TV!

"Why is human advancement in some areas of the world an indictment against all of humanity?"

Because it comes at the expense of the planets resources. The fact that you are consuming so much means most of Africa is starving. You might like to think you are wonderful sat there choking down burgers, watching TV, driving to work and breaking wind but the truth is you are consuming far more than the planet can sustain. This situation cannot last. Science has brought us to the brink of catastrophe and has no solutions for us except to leave a destroyed earth and spread disease and pestilence on the surface of another planet. You can give everyone on earth 50 TV's each and consider it "advancement", unfortunately the planet will be completely destroyed. In my opinion that isn't advance ok?

The dinosaurs have mankind beaten hands down in the survival stakes and they had never heard of "science". Outlived by a bunch of lizards with brains the size of walnuts. How groovy does science look to you now?

Hello Alex123...

Let me ask you this:

What can you do, or are currently doing within your current lifestyle to alleviate
world hunger, pollution, genocide, etc.? You may have some good ideas or
techniques others may glean information from.

In sharing such information, you present yourself as an example for others.
Perhaps somebody may take an idea of yours, tweak it a bit, apply it to a global
template, and actually make significant difference in the issues you hold dear to
your heart.

The actions we take on a daily basis may seem insignificant to us on a personal
basis, but we may be an unwitting example for somebody else, and those actions
may be a life changing experience for others.

May Peace be with you throughout your day.

Peace to Everyone,

Peaceful Nomad

I will tell you what I am doing if you don't mind, not because mine is the best solution but is the best I could come up with.
First I am not against technology, I am all for it, but in a responsible manner, what I am against is consumerism, and that's what is killing the earth.
So I left behind the rat race, got me 30 acres, as long as I live I will take care of them and leave it better then when I got them for me and all it's inhabitants, I try to grow my own food organically, live simple buy things when only needed, and strive to be self reliant.
And I can state that I am 100% debt free.
I also try to share my life style as much of possible to inspire others ones the same way I have been inspire.
I may not be able to change the world but I wont be part in making it worse.
Things that I have gain so far, peace of mind, connection to the earth, time to gaze at the stars and perhaps the best satisfaction is to smoke my pipe in complete silence.
What else can a man ask for?
