All I can say is that I sympathize with you...life is VERY hard right now for me as well. We'll make it  Good luck with everything...remember when you bottom out you can only go up.

Oh man... been there!

When I returned to work after my son's birth, it was as production supervisor in charge of 40 people. Prior to that, I was in charge of nothing. Also, I started 2nd shift, 12hr days, 6 days a week. It was pretty stressful, to say the least.

And, I have to admit, the first three months I was asking myself, "How did you grow up to be such a monster?" because I spent a lot of time thinking that I had made a terrible, terrible mistake having a child. I wasn't ready!

Well, it never gets any easier, but it does get better. Your daughter will begin holding her own bottle, and you'll be moved to tears. She'll learn to roll over... tears. Crawling, walking, talking... all tears of joy.

What worked for us was being realistic about how much stress today's world brings into lives. It isn't going to be like it was for your parents raising you. Don't even consider trying to compare how your parents did it to how you're doing it.

My wife and I got a sitter (get someone you know and trust so that doesn't induce more stress) to give her a break once in a while. At first this lady came to our house for 4 or 5 hours and just sat there while our son and my wife slept. Right now your daughter sleeps about an hour every 2 or 3 hrs I bet- your wife is probably as sleep-deprived as the guests of the US at Guantanamo! OF COURSE she's going to freak out from time to time! Reassure her she's not as bad mother, because that is what she's thinking right now even if she won't admit it to you.

So, here's what worked for us in list form:

1.) Realizing today's world is harder than yesterday's world on parents raising newborns, and letting go of preconceived notions of how we were going to do it.

2.) Getting someone we trusted to give us a few uninterrupted hours to sleep- with sleep, you can face anything!

3.) Accepting our reactions to the stress as normal. You've got to deal with your child's needs, not spend your energy beating yourself up.

As for that Aunt, fuck her. Who the hell does she think she is to add to your stress at a time like this. Does she like to set wounded animals on fire too?!?

The job will either work out or not. It isn't as important as your family now. Nothing is. When kids are young, they don't know if you're a good provider or not. They only know if you're there for them or not. Until your kid is in school, they'll be just as happy living in a box as in a house, so long as dada is home!!

You've got a bright, glorious experience ahead of you. The start is rocky as hell though... but hang in there, and remember, the rewards grow massively after the first six months!

That is something I was told from a young kid, and still helps me get out of a bad thought process time and time again.

Thanks!

I don't really know what to tell you, I have never been good at handling responsibility. I have some anxiety problems top. Do you ever use any techniques to help with them (besides drugs)? I don't know of any websites with information on coping with anxiety/stress, but there has to be some. There are a lot of decent breathing exercises, and different ways to help calm down that can help a lot.

Maybe thinking about the future would help. I don't know how much you think about it already but trying to make yourself excited about your daughter, and her future might help.

www.healthboards.com might be a good place for you and your wife. I know they have some message boards about dealing with new mothers, ect.

good luck man

This might help. Except for your wife and child. Disown any family members that you do not consider real friends. Actually if you don't consider your wife a real friend you can disown her also. I just assumed you are friends.

This is SO important!  No one helped me get extra sleep while my boys were little, and it was very difficult to manage all the responsibility while sleep-deprived.  As soon as I started napping with my youngest, even if it was only a 15 minute catnap, I noticed that I didn't feel overwhelmed anymore.

If you can get a sitter, go for it!  Or ask a relative (one who doesn't call to abuse you!) if they can come over once in a while to allow for a nap.  Your wife is probably more sleep-deprived than you are right now, but if you can get the sitter to come over when you're both home, allowing you to nap together, that would be excellent.

It's too easy to "lose track" of each other in the daily schedule, and having some restful snuggle time would allow you both to reconnect while you recuperate.

And do what for the child? Genuine inquiry, not trying to bust balls

Share custody. If you don't have a working relationship with your partner it just might be better for the child for the parents to seperate. Both can still be in the childs life. It's, unfortunately a common practice in the States.

Thanks all for the isight's;

Veritas and Screenprinter, It sound's like you are familiar with the situation, and I had not even concidered that I am sleep deprived at the moment, and Trish is even more so. After reading the post's here I had a good chat with Trish, and we are going to call her parent's about sitting the kid once in a while.
