i go through these horrible experiences sometimes. last night i was drifting off to sleep, but suddenly realized i couldnt breathe throug my nose. right. no big deal.
but then i start to get the felling like i cant get enough air, and im trying to get some through my nose, and i feel like im sufficating, even though im breathing through my mouth. i totally start freakng out, i know its in my head, but i cant help it. it was scary.
somtimes its like that with sound...b/c there is always some sound and when i cant escape from it i start to feel claustraphobic, same as with the air.
anyone else get this feeling? what should i do?

Meditate or something they relieves stress. Most likely you have too much stress in your life. I experience similar things sometimes, its a pain, but after it happens, it is surely a relief that it was all in the head.

I have these sometimes too. Strangely, its only when Im high (or I only notice it when Im high) I'll be just about to fall asleep, then I'll realise that Im not breathing! And so I snap myself out of sleep to get a big gasp of air. Its pretty scary.
Actually, isnt this called sleep apnea or something?

Yea, it is called sleep apnea.
There are some prescription drugs for sleep apnea, perhaps you should visit your physician and ask him/her about it.
Sleep apnea is not uncommon.

I get the same thing when I smoke too. I usually will get up and get a glass of water, take some deep breaths and talk myself down. I think it is a cause of anxiety. I tend to think of all the things that are making me stressed right before bed so it gets me going. I also have acid reflux disease caused by stress and this also gives me shortness of breath. Its definately no fun.

yeah sleep apnea is breathing problems while asleep, but dont write off panic attacks as a possible comorbid problem there.
