Sleep
    #2572068 - 04/17/04 09:39 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I'm not an insomniac, I can get sleep, but usually I dont get my sleep before very late... alot of times I can only fall asleep an hour beforfe school starts.  If I can get my sleep into rythym for real then I will be able to sleep at 24:00 every night, but the late weekends always spoil it and my first decent night after the weekend is usually Thursday or Friday.  THis is really fucking with me, my whole family (and teachers and the like...) has a thing against me because of this, but its something I just cant get myself to do so well... sleep.

What can I do.  I really need help on this.  My friends can stay up untill 3 one night and sleep at 12 the next night, I just cant get into rythym that fast.

And I dont want to take pills, last time I did, I was knocked out for like 15 hours or something and when I woke up I was in a really cranky pissed off and still sleepy mood.

I'm sort of the same way.  I gravitate towards a noctural sleep schedule.  Right now, I get up at 9pm, and don't go to bed until 12pm the next day.  That way I have the entire night for writing, which is good because my creative energy is highest during this time.

The only bad thing is, that I get paranoid on this sleep schedule.  I'm constantly wondering, "who's-gonna-get-me".  But luckily, I can ignore it by writing.

My only advice is to plan out your sleep schedule and STICK to the plan no matter what.  On weekends too.  That sort of blows, but hopefully a good sleep schedule is worth it.

Siniquan.

Anyways, if I had a situation which allowed me to be able to be up all night and sleep all day, I would do the same as you, stay up all night and write.  I love writing, I can write for hours and hours and I love doing it at night.  I'm a total night person, it feels like its only then I can really put my mind into doing things I like to do.

But I got school and shit.  Yes a sleep schedule blows.  I was wondering more like if there were any herbs, teas... things that can help with .

How old are you? Have you tried melatonin?

I'm kinda like that too, except probably not as bad. I many times fall asleep at 3 - 4 in the morning.
My advice is get CVS brand sleeping pills. You might be cranky for a few days but there is no real easy to correct a sleeping pattern.

That is the most fucked-up sleeping schedule ever. At least you're regular, I guess. I, myself, work two midnight shifts and two afternoons each a week at 7/11. I go from hitting the sack between 2-9 am throughout the week. Probably not healthy.

I've been up untill now, 06:36 am without an ounce of sleep. Heh, I'm trying to stay awake untill I crash... hopefully in the late evening (when I'm supposed to sleep). So thats how it is...
I hate the days when I've been up all night, I get a bad concentration, bad mood... and everything else that comes with extreme tiredness.

God, is there really nothing else than chemical pills?! Not even hash will get me asleep.

I'm telling you - try melatonin.
It's the chemical in your brain that regulates sleep patterns.

Yeah, it sounds fucked up, but it's actually perfect for my lifestyle right now. It also maximizes the amount of time I'm able to spend with my husband, because of his work schedule. I sleep while he's at work and wake up when he gets home.

I'll check into the melatonin thing.

Edit: Now I'm dead tired and a bit weirded out which I usually get when I'm awake till the next day... think I'm going to have to go to work in a few hours but I need to get some sleep first... fuck this sleeping shit is fucking with me.

Lol... my sleep rythym is all scrambled. You know what I just came up to this conclusion: why feel the need to go to sleep at a certain hour and wake up a certain hour anyway? think I'm I going to do what ellemy is doing, stay up at nights... which will give me the oppertunity to get done with stuff in peace when nothing else is distracting and sleep after school. I'm going to go to sleep after dinner (after school) and wake up in the evening and repeat... I'll try it out for a few days at least.

Set a schedule and live by it... don't alter it for weekends... cut out the coffee and soda... don't sleep in.

Exactly.

My sleeping pattern tends to fuck up after a few days of sleeping in. The last week has been great though - going to sleep at midnight and waking up at 9 feeling good.

A good balance makes you feel so much better. Gotta have balance.

True, today was a better day, I only slept through the first class
Valarian root huh?  Ok, I'll try to get a hold of that.  I hardly drink coffe anymore and I dont drink soda that often, so that cant be the problem.  If insomniac fits my criteria then ok, I'm an insomniac, but arent insomniacs who can never sleep and are just always awake?

Nah, they just have trouble sleeping. Here you go - 49 tips to help you sleep. I got this off some website. Ths is a crack up. Yeah I think you are having trouble falling asleep because your pjs are too tight and you aren't using a pillow that 'suits you' :smirk: No, some of these tips seem alright. Though some of them are shit. Have someone read aloud to you before going to sleep. Yeah.......right.

49 TIPS TO HELP YOU SLEEP:
  1.  Establish a regular bedtime.
  2.  Try to get 8 hours of sleep each night.
  3.  Rise at the same time seven days a week, no matter what.
  4.  Do not linger in bed when you wake up, instead, get up right away.
  5.  Your mattress should not sag.
  6.  Have a big enough bed for yourself.
  7.  The optimum temperature for sleep is 60-64 degrees.
  8.  Buy a humidifier to keep your room warm in the winter without drying out the air too much.
  9.  Check the medicines you are taking to see that they are not nervous system stimulants.
10.  Avoid over the counter sleeping pills as they can be addicting. Seek a physician for prescription tablets if necessary.
11.  Avoid napping in the afternoon.
12.  Do some sort of physical activity each day.
13.  Exercise during the day but not within four hours of going to bed.
14.  Do your paperwork or other work-related activities early in the evening.
15.  Avoid engaging in arguments during the evening hours.
16.  Your pajamas should be comfortable, not too tight.
17.  Use a pillow that suits you.
18.  Restrict your late evening TV watching to selections on the light side, such as comedy or entertainment programs.
19.  Keep your reading light just before bedftime -- nothing too intense or exciting.
20.  Move away from your computer at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
21.  Listen to relaxing music.
22.  Develop a 30 minute relaxation ritual such as taking a warm bath, deep breathing, or progressive muscle relaxation.
23.  Make sure your bedroom is not noisy. If it is and you can't correct it, wear earplugs.
24.  Cut down or eliminate smoking and drinking alcohol at least two hours before bedtime.
25.  Do not drink coffee or soft drinks containing caffeine after dinner.
26.  Avoid eating too much salt with your dinner and in any after dinner snacks.
27.  Try eating snacks high in calcium and protein before retiring to bed.
28.  Try drinking herbal teas such as chamomile.
29.  Do not forget about a glass of milk before bed.
30.  Try mixing two teaspoons of honey with two teaspoons of cider vinegar in a cup of hot water.
31.  Add a tablespoon of dry mustard powder to your before-bed bath.
32.  Add baking soda to your bath water.
33.  A footbath before bedtime may help.
34.  Make sure your bedroom is well ventilated but not too cold.
35.  Do not use too many or too few blankets.
36.  Do not engage in non-sleep activities in bed.
37.  Do not tuck your sheets in too tight at the bottom of the bed; your feet should feel free and unrestricted.
38.  Try to relax before bedtime; try to take a walk or read a newspaper; just do something that is not stressful.
39.  Ask someone to read aloud to you in bed before you go to sleep.
40.  Spend no more than three minutes thinking about the day's problems when you are in bed; instead, recall the happiest experiences of your life.
41.  Think of places you fall asleep easily and try to copy those places; set your room up the same way.
42.  Lie on your back in bed and relax each muscle in your body.
43.  Visualize various parts of your body relaxing.
44.  Concentrate on doing some deep breathing as you lie in bed.
45.  Do not try to fight sleep.
46.  Go to sleep with a positive attitude.
47.  Do not get upset if you cannot sleep.
48.  If all else fails, try counting sheep!
49.  If you cannot fall asleep within 30 minutes of going to bed, get up until you feel tired.
